Offset Left, For this exercise you'll have two free Pull ups if you need them without penalty, Also two G.O A.L., take advantage of all that you need and don't take unnecessary chances. Offset backing to the Left, Everyone will perform ONE of the Offsets, either right or left. Also required is one of the more advanced manuvers, the Parallel Park Conventional, Parallel Park Sight Side or the Alley Dock. So 6 videos covering all of the manuvers. You'll only do 3 for your license. The points system for pull ups starts after the number of free pull ups that were stated for the backing skill. They are 1 point each after the free pull ups. The points for excroachments are 2 points for each part of the vehicle that goes over a line marked with cones, not counting forward boundary lines. If you encroach you'll be stopped and required to clear the encroachment, which means an additional pullup or reverse in direction, whichever applies. You cannot finish an exercise encroached. You can finish outside a boundary line for your final position. The final position has to be adhered to or there is a 13 point penalty. You have 12 points to pass, point 13 is a Fail. You'll have to reschedule the entire test again no sooner than three days into the future, weekends don't count.This Video shows the basic concept of this manuver using Two free pull ups and both or two (G.O.A.L.) Get out and look. You can only take two, taking a third look is not allowed. You can take as many pull ups as you need, you'll start incurring points when you are at the third pull up and beyond.
Ask any question you want to the examiner.

I think either will work, as someone trying to learn in the beginning there has to be a basic concept. Eventually you won't need to rely on these steps so much because you'll have a better idea where the truck is in relation to the trailer and the manuvers will be more instinctive. You see some drivers out there that are just able to whip it in the spot without too much effort, It's because they have developed an instinctive feeling of how to do this.

Hello Desparate, Q#1...Hold the wheel at the top, when you make a manuver do a small one and then wait to see which direction the trailer is going. Don't wait too long because you'll turn to much. Know what the rig looks like when it in a straight line. What I mean is, how much of the side of the trailer can I see? if it get's bigger and you see more of the side, the rig is turning and you need to control that. Q#2....When you steer back and get the truck back in front of the trailer it's so you can see both sides again. If you don't have visibility in both mirrors you could hit somthing so it's only to be able to check both sides. The back of the trailer should be lined up to the entrance of the lane. If it's not try to guide it in but only a small amoult. Go back as far as you can so you get as much room in front of you to pullup. Take the pullups, Their free for the first two then they are the smallest point value from then on after the two. When you pullup go outside the lane to the left and stay there so you drag the rear of the trailer to the left to line up with the lane. Your pullup is this...hard left and go outside the lane, then straight for a distance, then back to the right to get the rig lined up with the parking space again. The toy truck is OK if that's all you have. What state are you testing in? Good Luck, let me know if you pass!

Hello Fransisco, I think another Video would help. Until then try two things, #1 first when you downshift you have to increase the RPM when you get the stick in nuetral, approximately 300 to 400 rpm, try 400 to start. You need to practice doing a consistant rev for downshifting. To practice this stop the truck and place it in neutral, set the brake, while watching the tachometer push the throttle quickly and touch the floor with the pedal. How much did the RPM increase? It should go from 600 RPM to about 1000 RPM. Don't hold it on the floor, the RPM will go up too high. Practice this several times, Because you have to double clutch for the CDL test, this technique will get the down shift done in the least amount of time. #2 Next (say this to yourself) NEUTRAL REV, Clutch a small amount---place the shifter in neutral---REV---As soon as the RPM is increased 300 to 400 RPM as you practiced it---Go to the next lower gear. One last thing don't do the down shift until the RPM falls to around 900 to 1100 rpm. Your REV will go up to around 1300 to 1500 for the down shift.

Your instructor may say this and restrict you from making pull ups. I’m not sure but teaching the procedure with different rules than what the state requires makes no sense. In the state testing rules I promise you there is no restriction of when you do pull ups. Listen to the overview at the beginning of the video. Those are the rules and then if you have questions you can ask the examiner.

Same, our school will not let you pull up straight until the back of the trailer breaks the imaginary plane between the front two cones of the lane. With this method you're just cranking the wheel, getting back in front of it and then pulling up and doing a straight back. You learn zero skills that way. Maybe do it that way if you need to in order to avoid pointing out on your exam, but while in school you should practice the proper way to execute the maneuver.

Hello it is me again. I went to two schools and could not back-up. excuse me, I did once or twice but I lost it. I realize now set-up is everything. I've watched your videos of off-set and parallel numerous times. and it have given me the courage to take the CDL test, I test on Tuesday, may 9th.I do have two questions, When you straight back is it better to hold your steering wheel at 12 o'clock on top, or 9 and 3 on the sides?2nd question- When you off-set left, and you hard left and stay to left until trailer straight. Will the trailer fall into the lane or do you have to guide it? do not back up until you have good visibility on both sides. what should you be able to see? I know you said you have to be in the truck to actually perform the maneuvers, but I don't have a choice right now. I wish I had see these videos before class. sighed desperate!

If this was a person teaching you they don't want you to make any unnecessary pull-ups because if you have used all of the free pull-ups you are now adding penalty points to your score and that's not necessary just to make it more straight. Only do so if you're not in the space correctly.

I was taught to do a 12-12 turn to begin my maneuver both in offsets and parallels, but you full turn if the wheels seem to line up better; is your full turn better than 12-12 in your opinion or would either work?

Keep in mind you only have 140 feet from the entrance of the offset Lane to the forward boundary line. To straighten you must steer the tractor very aggressively all the way. You need big results in a short amount of distance. If you are steering casually you will not get the results.

I just have one question? on the internet it was advised to get a toy truck to practice maneuvers. to see how the tractor/trailer moves. I asked a trucker and he said it would not help because you cannot move the wheel. a remote control is better. I respect your opinion and your input would be greatly appreciated.

You have 140 feet from the entrance of the cones to the forward boundary line. That’s about two truck length, or a little bit more. My theory is to get as much done in the shortest amount of distance. You’re trying to get that trailer over to that other lane, either left or right. There’s many ways to do it and I show just one example. Best of luck!

@@the_9th_power873 Yes, that will bring the landing gear into site quicker. Then stop and go the other direction with the wheel turned all the way, now you established the angle you want in the shortest amount of distance.

Is there a guideline for how far ahead of the space you should be before you start backing?
@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest 4 жыл бұрын
140 feet for Class A and 100 feet for Class B vehicles from the entrance of the offset space. That's about two times the length of your truck for class A and perhaps even more for a Class B
@Swara96
@Swara96 4 жыл бұрын
When you start you went to the right, then said bring it to the left, you mean center your wheels or all the way to the left till the truck and trailer are straight?
@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest 4 жыл бұрын
Steer all the way to the left so that you can quickly move the tractor. The key word is quickly which makes the tractor move in a short amount of distance. Once the tractor comes into alignment with the alley steer right so you’re straight which allows you to see both mirrors. Until you’re aligned with the offset alley you need to steer aggressively because you have 140 feet to do the maneuver which is not a lot of space. Continue with the rest of the instructions. Thanks for the comment! 👍

@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest Жыл бұрын
You have two lanes that are both 12 feet wide. From the front cone position going forward to the point where you stop and start backing is 140 feet, probably a little more than twice the length of a Class A vehicle.

If G.O.A.L is all about safety. Why is there a penalty or limits to G.O.A.L? Is that a state CDL requirement, only 2? I'm not a trucker, but may have to CDL test for a 5th wheel rv. TIA...
@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest

Great question, The examiner wants to access your skill level and wants to see you do the most of maneuver without getting out and constantly checking. You're more skilled if you can do it with minimal looks. No points are accessed if you get out more than two. The examiner will just remind you that you only have two looks and you have to finish the maneuver staying in the truck. No CDL required for a Fifth wheel unless your doing that commercially. Private use doesn't require a CDL

What is the spot mirror and halfway to the center point of the landing gear frame?
@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest 3 жыл бұрын
A spot mirror is the convex mirrors that show the image in a bit of a distorted view but none the less a larger view of a space. The frame that supports the landing gear is shaped like the letter K laying on its side. Where all three points come together identifies the center. Aim for that. Thanks for the comment!

@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest 5 жыл бұрын
You should make a decision to do a pull-up when you want to correct your position. The first two pull-ups are not charged against you. The third one is and they are 1 point each. You're allowed 12 points on all three backing exercises, the 13th point is a fail. Yes you can pull-up when you're outside the cones. In fact you're required to because you can't finish the exercise outside the cones.

Don't you get docked a point if your not in the first set cones doing a pull up?
@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest 6 жыл бұрын
No, the only time you have points for pullups is when you reverse direction at any point or location after you use the free pullups. If you finalize the exercise and you're not parked behind the cones, that means all the way in the parking space, it is a 10 point penalty. So you get 12 points maximum all together to start with, a 10 point hit will be devastating ,

So you can go hard left past the imaginary boundary on the left like a serpentine pull up without getting deducted for crossing the line where the cones are ? I'm confused great video just wandering
@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
@mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest 6 жыл бұрын
Let me try to clear this up, Yes you can go hard left. The only cones to cross that will incure penality points are the, left and the right side of the truck. There are no cones at the back. The front of the truck has to be completely behind the front cones. You have to be parked completely in the space. This manuver has two free pullups so use them to get the truck lined up to the parking space. If you use pullups beyond the 2 free, they only have a 1 point value. Pullups are to be used so when you park you can see all areas of your truck. If you're backing and you can't see, you'll run the risk of hitting cones, or in the real world senerio anothe truck.

The Overview mentions to honk the horn, that's if you finish the exercise inside the vehicle. I've had applicants outside the vehicle when they take there last and final look and if they're satisfied with the position of the vehicle then they tell the examiner they are finished. That is fine as long as they communicate that they are finished.
