Here's English translation: Finland, behold, thy daylight now is dawning The threat of night has now been driven away The skylark calls across the light of morning The blue of heaven lets it have its way And now the day the powers of night is scorning: Thy daylight dawns, O Finland of ours! Finland, arise, and raise towards the highest Thy head now crowned with mighty memory Finland, arise, for to the world thou criest That thou hast thrown off thy slavery Beneath oppression's yoke thou never liest Thy morning's come, O Finland of ours!

@@leopartanen8752 Yeah it's slightly altered to rhyme in English, and to fit the tempo of the singing. Here's a more literal translation: Oh, Finland, look, your day is dawning The threat of night has already been driven away The morning's skylark is singing in the brightness As if the very top of the skies itself was ringing* The powers of the night are defeated by morning's light Thy daylight dawns, Oh our country of birth**! Oh, rise up Finland, and raise high Your head wreathed with mighty memories Oh, rise up Finland, you showed the world That you banished slavery And that you didn't bend under oppression Your morning has begun, Oh our country of birth**! *"Sois" could be translated as either "to allow" or "to ring". I've always thought of this line meaning more that the skylark's song is resonating through the skies, but the skies allowing the skylark to sing could also be correct. **There is no "our" in the Finnish lyrics, but just "country of birth" sounds a bit nonsensical in English. The context implies it's referring to the country where Finns are born i.e. Finland. Perhaps "our country of birth" sounds nonsensical too.

I once heard Finlandia performed by a large veterans' choir. That is, veterans of WW2. The average age of the singers was already quite high, and the choir might not have been the best possible, but you could see that they meant every word from the bottom of their hearts. That performance was unforgettable. I don't believe there was a single person in the audience who wasn't in tears.

As a Finn, being an active reservist... Thanks for your video. In Finland, practically all men are part of defence forces until we are 50 or 60 yo. I'm 55 and now, when Russia threats us once again, we are in the exercises 3-4 times a year. Sometimes hard, I'm still in recoinnaissance unit. Too old, to run around forests & swamps 25 miles / day 😅 But then we remember our grandparents. They died in the defence of this country. Against Stalin and red army. Today, we have biggest artillery in the whole Europe. 900000 men - and women - in readyness. I've the whole gear at home, all the time. So, this song is part of our mindset at this moment. It was very meaningful in the 1940s, and it is today. Sorry to say this but I'm somewhat glad it hits. It hits over here, too. We don't want any wars, never, but if Putin decides try to invade us, they must kill us all. God is on our side. Thank you 🙏🪖

Finland is a small nation with full of stubborn, peace loving people that are proud of their heritage. Finland was part of Sweden for most of its history before beeing occupied by Russia on 1808-1809. Finland had autonomic state at first but was faced by Russian opression on late 1800s and after communist revolution in Russia Finland declared independence on December 1917. After being independent for 23 years Soviet Union attacked Finland on 1940 and the pride nation was forced to fight more or less alone against a strong big neighbor that wanted to suppress us. Finland is one of the few European countries that didn’t downscale the defence forces and the willingness to defend own country is one of the highest in the world. Seeing Ukraine fighting for its suverinity is painful. Most countries take independence and freedom as given but some need to live close to unstable and unpredictable big countries. Many Finnish patriot songs are full of proud, sadness, and willingness to fight to defend everything that you hold as dear to you - your home, family and your small country.

Some are stubborn, some are peace loving, some not so, but many don't know too much about their history. (Joo oon suomalainen, 100% monessa polvessa.) Quite a poem you wrote, but let's straighten some facts: occupied 1808? More like invaded and conquered by Russian Empire as a part of Napoleonic wars. With more or less autonomic status, because Czars mostly wanted to keep Finns untroubled and loyal, which they mostly were too. After Dec. 1917 and the short but bloody Civil War 1918 the new Finnish state was kind of German protectorate until the end of WW1. Some say that real independence began only after November 1918. The massive Soviet invasion, so called Winter War began Nov. 30th 1939 and lasted until March 13th 1940. Then you left wholly aside the era when horrified and maybe a bit vengeful Finland joined Hitler's invasion in Soviet Union. Many like me think that they were pretty much forced to do that choice between Hitler and Stalin. Trying to wage "separate" war with as much distance to Germany as possible, they came out bleeding and a bit carved but still standing nation Sept. 1944. Clearly under Soviet influence after that in terms of foreign policy, but managing to avoid Soviet occupation or communist coup. All in all interesting part of North European history.

Jean Sibelius composed this patriotic music piece in 1900, as a part of the symphonic poem Finlandia, (op 26). Finland was still under Russian empire, and there was an aggressive oppression of Finns by Russians. The hymn has several different lyrics in Finnish. The best known, most commonly used lyrics were written in 1940 by a well known Finnish poet, Veikko Antero Koskenniemi. This tune is also known as an international anthem, "This is my song", and the composition has also been used as a Christian hymn, "Be Still, my Soul"

Finlandia never fails to make me cry. ;_; If not earlier, then when they go "sa että karkoitit orjuuden / ja ettet taipunut sa sorron alle" (that you banished slavery / and that you did not bend under oppression). Idk, I think it makes every Finn emotional. As for me, I am a grandchild of internally displaced Finnish Karelians, so it makes me think of everyone who fought for our independence and freedom, but also everything and everyone we've lost fighting for those things. My homeland is still under russian rule since the end of ww2.

Slavery and oppression in Finland happened during the Swedish rule - the king frequently ordered Finns to fight against any country (a purpose to kill all the Finns). Russian time was great as an autonomous free society and extensive industrialism led by Russian tsars. In WW II the purpose of our Ashkenazis was to destroy USSR by joining Hitler - Finnish people did not have anything to do with that.

@@mikkopunkari1676 Oh, hi, Kremlin troll. Do they pay you like the Chinese pay to the 50 cent army? Maybe educate yourself about Finland's history with russia prior to autonomy and russification efforts of the autonomous times. Not saying Swede's weren't oppressors, they were, but russian's were pretty shitty, too, overall. Do you even know who the Ashkenazis are? Finland's goal was to protect Finland from the Soviet Union by the means availabe to them. There would never have been any need to seek help from the Germans had the Soviet Union not attacked first in 1939 (whilst being in alliance with the Germans, I might add).

At some point - during the Russian oppression - this song was banned. The Russians prohibited this song; it could not be performed. First we had autonomy from 1809 onwards, granted by the Tsar when Finland was separated from Sweden and joined as part of Russia. We had our western government style, our own laws and economy, even our own currency Suomen markka (from 1860) etc. We started to find our identity as Finns. There is a saying that describes that time: "We are not Swedish, we don't want to become Russian, so let's be Finnish.' At first everything was good, but towards the end of the 19th century and in the beginning of the 20th century things changed. During 1899-1905 and 1908-1917 the Russian government tried to ban our laws, wanted Finns to serve in the Russian army, abolished our newspapers etc. In general, they wanted Finns to become Russians under Russian laws and government and deny our status as autonomous area. Finlandia hymni was composed in 1899-1900 and it became part of the Finnish passive rebellion against Russian oppression. As I said, the song was banned, but it was performed under different names and it had a deep impact to each audience listening to it. We "didn't bend under the oppression", we "banished the slavery" and we then and now "rise up" to the daylight/dawn. We became an independent nation! For us Finns this song goes very deep, even deeper than the second World War and the words you heard. Even if the words came later (1940's), the impact was the same. You felt it even when you didn't understand the words!

Freedom, Reliability and Honesty are the traits i'm most proud of as a Fin. Those traits are very rare these days in many places around the world, but we still honor them here, and that honor is seen everywhere even though times are changing and that code of honor is slowly dying. We have a lot to learn with the skills of expressing emotions and not being jealous of someone having more wealth, but on the other hand we are very hard working and humble people, and we have some traditions and rules in our society, that many countries could benefit. I don't like Finnish government at all, and haven't liked for a long time. Still, so good damn many things are great here, which make this country the best I know. But beyond countries, different skin colors and ways of life, we are all humans. Especially the Finno-Ugric people, are literally like relatives genetically. I hope we never again have to fight the pointless wars that businessmen, and crazy leaders might want. Peace, love and perkele from Finland. 🇫🇮🇫🇮🇫🇮💙💚

Finnish: Oi Suomi, katso, Sinun päiväs koittaa Yön uhka karkoitettu on jo pois Ja aamun kiuru kirkkaudessa soittaa Kuin itse taivahan kansi sois Yön vallat aamun valkeus jo voittaa Sun päiväs koittaa, oi synnyinmaa Oi nouse, Suomi, nosta korkealle Pääs seppälöimä suurten muistojen Oi nouse, Suomi, näytit maailmalle Sä että karkoitit orjuuden Ja ettet taipunut sä sorron alle On aamus alkanut, synnyinmaa English: Finland, behold, thy daylight now is dawning The threat of night has now been driven away The skylark calls across the light of morning The blue of heaven lets it have its way And now the day the powers of night is scorning: Thy daylight dawns, O Finland of ours! Finland, arise, and raise towards the highest Thy head now crowned with mighty memory Finland, arise, for to the world thou criest That thou hast thrown off thy slavery Beneath oppression's yoke thou never liest Thy morning's come, O Finland of ours!

It is spiritual in its core. That's why it is a piece of classical music known around the world. Jean Sibelius composed Finlandia when Finland was still Grand Duchy in Russian empire. It's the song, soul and spirit of a northern nation. Maybe that connected with your soul and spirit. Be well sister woman.

I wish you would listen the entire Finlandia opus 26 (sorry, could be I'm getting the name / number wrong here) which this song is a part of, maybe 1/4. No lyrics necessarily needed for this btw, very impressive also without them. ❤

First the elite force in the Swedish army, then the civil war, the winter war, the continuation war and the Lapland war. It has created a warrior culture that we hope we never have to see in action again. Contrary to what you might think, they are nice and peaceful.

Literal translation (I tried to do my best): Oh Finland behold, Your day is coming The nights threat is now banished away And the mornings skylark is singing (plays actually) in the light, As if heavens cover itself was singing Nights powers are being defeated by the light of the morning Your day is dawning, oh Fatherland. Oh Finland, Rise, lift up high.. ..your head crowned by big memories Oh Finland, Rise, you showed the world That you banished slavery And that you didn't yield under oppression Your morning has dawned, Fatherland.

As a person from Finland i would want to see footage from WW2 against mighty overpowered mother russian. IT would encapsulate term "SISU" and what our country stood for 1939-1945. And IT would encapsulate what Ukraine IS standing Ford right now! Good video anyway:)

🤩👍💥💯🎼 Awesomeness of Sibelius(from 1899)...But let´s not forget V. A. Koskenniemi who wrote these lyrics in 1940, which are since performed in this form. Although the hymn has had written lyrics and it was also performed before Koskenniemi. Neat reaction mi lady. Greets from Finland. 🤘😎💙🎶 ...Have you ever heard of or reacted to Nightwish? A Finnish symphonic - metal band with a female lead vocalist who´s one of the best voices of our times...Their recently released single from the upcoming album; "Yesterwynde" is : Nightwish - "Perfume of the Timeless"(Official Music Video) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pa5zlL2eruDWYKM.html

This video is a major humiliation for Finlandia, Sibelius, and Finland. The melody and later lyrics do not have anything to do with wars and army displayed in the video. Finlandia symphony is a celebration of our history - fighting for livelihood in the cold climate; working hundreds of years as war slaves for Sweden; receiving freedom as Russian autonomy 1809 with enormous industrial development; receiving independence from V. I. Lenin; and being very close to destroy our independence because of collaboration with A. Hitler with a purpose to destroy USSR. Thus we have gone from problem to another but survived (until now when our international policies again are a major catastrophe).
