sorry about that! CYA = cover your ass (helps protect you from bad communication/management); managing upward = kzfaq.infoC7oVluTm39o ; EA = executive assistant

That first bullet is CRUCIAL. The number if times I've explained my understanding of an assignment and it being a little or totally off the mark is astounding. It also helps generate questions and lets the other person know you are fully focused on what they are saying. Huge huge HUGE. Also, EAs are the real MVPs.

Sorry to bother but may I ask, has anyone ever "told you off" when you've explained back an assignment and were off mark and how do you handle that? I sometimes have trouble processing something and in my first job I was basically told off the one time I explained something back to try to understand it and was wrong (I only stayed there 2 months)... I'm starting my 2nd job soon and I'm really scared about that I don't know why maybe cause I fear they will think they made the wrong choice or that I'm not reliable? What has your experience been like?

Writing everything down is so important because you want to be able to clearly articulate your role/function/contributions during future job interviews as well!

It’s also great to log down what you do daily, however big or small. When needed, you will have a list of accomplishments to pull from when looking for your next job!

Also: EAs can absolutely save your a$$, so cultivate these relationships from the get-go. Don’t assume that your manager’s or partner’s EA is there to do your bidding, they have more than a full plate of responsibilities already. To the EAs out there: If you find yourself spending time individually teaching the ropes to members of each new-hire cohort, suggest (to your partner/manager or receptive HR person) that you (& the other EAs) design & develop a “How to Work with the EAs” seminar that you will present as part of each cohort’s new-hire training. I did this for at a Big 5 professional services firm and ! Benefits: Increased new-hire independence; decreased interruptions; increased EA morale; increased respect shown to EAs by practice-side staff because the new-hires realized what a wealth of knowledge is required to be a top-notch EA.

"Big 5" ? Lol just say Accenture or IBM

@@orueom7720 , lol, Accenture didn’t exist and IBM didn’t (and probably still doesn’t) occupy the same “professional services firm” space as this organization. But you’re not too far off with the former. 🤓

What if your first corporate job turns out to be a bad fit due to a toxic manager? Does it still look bad if you leave the job after a few months?
@untitled1464

Hello! So this is just my own opinion and definitely take it with a grain of salt. Honestly if you can afford to be unemployed for a month or would be okay taking a part time job immediately (if you aren’t interviewing for other jobs) my opinion is no it doesn’t look bad to leave a company earlier than a year because the toxic manager can manipulate the rest of management into firing you. I speak from personal experience and I genuinely regret not leaving my old company earlier. I did have a coworker leave the company only after 4 months because our manager was extremely toxic and they were able to find another corporate job within a few weeks of quitting.
