Occasionally, it is difficult to find new OEM sunvisors to be re-upholstered in leather, vinyl, etc... that way we could save time of not recovering them.
As shown in the video it was necessary to reconstruct and restore the old sunvisors and wrap them in automotive leather.
As you can see, I have rescued the metallic parts and just have added 'insole cardboard'. It was the solution to get new ones for the 'old chevy truck'.
I also show how an old wooden instrument panel is wrapped with automotive leather.
There are some interesting tips I hope you find it useful !

I know this an old video. But it's very pertinent to me now. I'm finding your work incredible. I've begun re-doing my upholstery in my 1967 and 1969 Chevrolet C10 trucks. I'm doing my own sun visors and I found this video of you doing the same visors same visors as mine. The arm rests as well. I've already finished my door panels but thinking of doing them again with something like you do. You've taught me tons and I thank you! I think i have stumbled across my next career!

Those machines are powerful to start doing nice jobs. But, if it is affordable, I would recommend a triple transportation/walking foot Pfaff sewing machine. A used one in good condition would be suitable for general upholstery. A new one, much better.

Hello Cechaflo, I just completed my 77 Ford F150 sun visors using this video. All went well until I attempted to get my visors beneath the feed foot of my Chandler TDU-N62 sewing machine and it wouldn't fit. So, I had to use a hand awl and put the binding on manually. They look beautiful and I thank you for all of the guidance of your videos. I just wish my feed foot lifted as high as yours must. Thanks again!

Since I didn't really dare risk my walking foot sewing machine doing it that way on my 1993 Toyota MR2 visors because it's a thick gauge wire frame that had worn out cardboard in the center with foam on both sides, I just hand stitched the baseball stitch pattern around the edge of the two pieces of fabric. I was just too paranoid of the machine's needle hitting the wire frame as tight as I was trying to get them. The foam pieces were still in alright shape so I reused those. Also used a plastic diamond mesh lashed to the wire frames in the same fashion as old style snow shoes instead of new cardboard so it can't be warped damaged from heat and humidity as the originals were damaged. It is a t-top car, so they are more prone to water damage. Basically that plastic mesh stuff you put in rain gutters on the house to keep leaves out. I highly recommend putting the two pieces of fabric together and punching the holes with the sewing machine so the holes on both pieces all line up correctly as you stitch it together by hand, the same basic principle as if you're pre-punching the holes for a steering wheel cover. Glad to see you've been having good success teaching other people your upholstery techniques. Figured I should share my technique for those who discover the perimeter wire frame is how their visors are made. ;-D

Hopefully I can get another answer. After folding both halves together with the binding, I getting a lot of skipped stitches. I have a Sailrite Fabricator so strength isn't the problem. works fine on thinner things. Any advise? Also what kind of presser feet are those?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 2 жыл бұрын
The skipped stitches is because of the sewing machine is not in time. The needle and thread gets tight while passing through, then it does allow to form the loop to let the hook point catch the thread loop. The rotary hook needs to be delayed (moved backwards) a little bit. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/prd3g8eavpzRaYk.html I only cut one of the presser foot toe to my right sight. It allows me to see the needle point.
@caddi70
@caddi70 2 жыл бұрын
I just sewed today the perimeter of the visor and it didn't go well. for one thing, my presser feet lacks a little bit of going high enough. I definitely want binding on mine where most people just fold the fabric inside sew it an be done. I want mine to be somewhat like the original style. I will just have to think over my strategy. I don't know where to buy the cardboard you use. then I guess the point is to make it wider so you can sew through it. I ripped it all apart and starting over

@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 9 жыл бұрын
Dear Dan, You have a good and strong sewing machine Juki LU 563. The 'secret' is to turn off the machine and patiently move the 'big wheel' by hand and do the stitches one by one (lol)...these pieces are small and need some attention to detail. My machine is also a clutch motor. I've heard from some friends that 'servo motors' are very useful and you can take an easy control of your sewing machine stitch by stitch...it's up to you. hate to keep bugging you about the same project, but I've already messed up twice. when you add the leather or vinyl, do you tuck it over 1 inch on the inside before you sandwich it or do you cut it flush? you are literally the only person I've seen do a binding on a sunvisor. I also used some pollywall that was available in one of my stores. it's just sheet vinyl. It's a little harder to cut, but it's the same thickness and you can still score it to bend
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 2 жыл бұрын
No worries, welcome back anytime. To get a cleaner edge the binding strip is tucked over the reverse side. It could be cut flush too, of course. The binding strip is first 'basted' with points of glue all around the edge. It is important to stretch/pull the leather or vinyl strip a little bit while turning on the round edges. it eases the sewing and we get nicer and a more flat binding. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eK2ld5Res6erl58.html The sunvisors of the video are OEM replicas for an old chevy truck. www.classicindustries.com/shop/1969/chevrolet/truck/parts/interior-soft-goods/headliner-components/sunvisors-hardware/

Kenneth Rolls The Juki LU563 is an excelent and very strong sewing-machine. Maybe, some adjustment upwards to the presser bar...check with a technician. Maybe, if you use a thinner or shorter feet would give us more room to let the materials underneath, that way you won't touch the presser bar. Good Luck and let us know the outcome!

@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 9 жыл бұрын

@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 7 жыл бұрын
@Cechaflo

Sorry for the delay. The binding strip was 6 cm wide considering the edges were folded to the inside. As we can see on the left at min 2.26 the strip on the reverse was pasted with a coat of yellow glue. Besides, there is a marked line in the center as a guide for the edges. This strip was previously skived to 0.8 mm thick. The leather thickness was 1.3 mm kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eK2ld5Res6erl58.html

Dear Mr. Cechaflo, how can I shave the leather to half its size? to make the welt etc. If we don't have the machine you have?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 8 жыл бұрын
+Denise Thuman Yes, half the size is OK for welting...The shaving by hand with a sharpened knife is good on small portions...it is a little difficult to get an even face on longer pieces. If you are going to devote your complete time to do leather jobs...then, it would be advisable to get a skiving machine...otherwise, to ask for the service of shoemaker or leather artisan in your area.

Geoff Halstead Hi Geoff, Great! you have found these videos useful! Think, 'tuck& roll pleats' basic video would be of great help for the upholstery pattern in the Austin 1935 ...maybe, you should use a thicker foam 3/4" to improve the look of the channels. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7BylLuEt72WiWw.html

1/2" firm scrim foam looks good on my 3" wide seat pleats, but 3/4" would look even better, as in even more plush. I went with that fake suede leather fabric though, which is pretty thin compared to upholstery vinyl or leather. 1/2" foam is about all my cheapo walking foot sewing machine can handle. lol Definitely don't try to push the sewing machine further than what it is capable of. Keep in mind you still have to stitch that part to the other parts. BTW, That's a pretty cool project Geoff. Thanks for showing us.
