This is a location we went to about 5 years ago when we were first getting into rockhounding and now we are returning for a round two with it.

I live in Maine and worked at Mt.Mica mine in the 90s. I've been rockhounding since the late 70s and have found some beautiful stuff. Unfortunately i sold most everything over the years, but it paid my bills. I still have great memories.

My parents use to live just west of this location at about MP 10 on Highway 6. Yes it is green, muddy, muddy and rain, rain and more rain. Don’t miss the rain and mud. But I will probably visit there someday soon next time I’m at Tillamook. Good looking finds. I bet you are glad to be back home where it is a lot dryer! LOL. That’s why I moved to Redmond, OR.

Thanks for braving the wet and cold to give us a virtual tour of another great rockhounding place. Craig and I were in Astoria for a few days just after you and Sarah made your trip. We were lucky to get 2 days that were pretty decent. I'm with you on the pronunciation of Augite. Thanks for sharing the microscope pics. I like them. Micro- and MacroCool!

@@CurrentlyRockhounding I would love to. I am planning on making it to the Wild Turkey Mine for this month's open weekend, on Saturday and hoping to visit another site as yet to be determined on Sunday. If it's not too far from the Wild Turkey, I might even be able to visit Stone Rose.

@@CurrentlyRockhounding yes I have! last weekend went out around prosser to some fantastic petrified wood spots that are untouched and unfound which is rare in todays times, headed up to liberty this weekend. Good luck on your adventures as well!

I was just there a week ago! Man that collecting spot is steep, you really got to be careful or you will tumble all the way down the mountain. Luckily that didn't happen to me.

If your talking about the coastal regions it seems to be the average temp is in the 60`s year round, now if you go over the cascades to the central parts it can be hot in the summers and col in winter, then in Eastern part can be hot in summer mostly in the 80`s to 90`s and in winter it can get as cold as minus - 0 .

The augite i have is green but it has to be sliced thin to tell because of the saturation of color. Sweet stuff there.

Those crystals are really neat! I love the olivine on them. And thank you for hi-lighting an oregon location! They really were all over the ground there! and the matrix pieces were absolutely phenomenal! That one, big, perfect crystal in the tuff was really beautiful. And the pieces with the tons of smaller crystals, everywhere in the matrix were just as awesome! and i love the microscope pictures! the green, clear look of the crystals under the microscope were really beautiful. And to see the fractured edge of a large crystal, green and transparent, was really cool. You would never guess looking at it without the microscope! Thank you for going back and sharing you experience with us, and baring the elements to do so! We really appreciate your dedication!

I think the highly magnified photos of the material really sets it off in a way that is hard to do with just the naked eye. This location isn't too far from you. You should go visit it this spring.

I think it would be fun to start a rock swap, or rocks for fossils, fossils for fossils or even rocks for rocks. With me being in the midwest (Wisconsin) I do get a lot of coral fossils but also go to upper Mich. and get natural copper nuggets and Upper lites. The only way i see it to be fair is pound for pound or ounce for ounce. I think it would really help beginner rock hounds as well as those who can't get around that well any more. If interested in this i would sure start today.

I totally agree with this idea, it's a great idea! I feel there are places you cant get to because of different reasons and if you can find someone to trade them with equal value or pound for pound.

FWIW the road/trail you said you walked about a mile on, it pops out on Kilchis Lookout Road. Someday I will stop to collect some Augite but I'm always on my quad with riding buddies, but Someday. Not far from there is a wall of green rock that is impressive...happy hunting 😳

My son and I went in March. It was so easy to collect. He climbed to the top and got some there - until he heard a large cat - cougar, so we left in a hurry. Next time we will take a gun.

There is one spot I have been to that I have found augite at, look different from the ones you found but the could be bc of a difference in the environment the crystals formed in.

Well most of the crystals are far from perfect. The only ones that are perfect are those that form in ideal conditions. Just chemistry and physics really.

Been there, done that. However it was over 30 years ago. I still have a few of the better crystals we collected that day. I found them to be very fractured and would crumble with little to no pressure. I did not know there was Olivine associated with them in that location. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

These are not meant to be polished, you just collect them and enjoy them as is.
