Cedar Log Being Milled on a Foley-Belsaw A-14 Circular Sawmill

The Foley-Belsaw A-14 sawmill is finally running well. The blade is a 48" inserted tooth blade we got at an auction. This mill originally came with only two headblocks, but a third was added from a parts carriage. The heavier dogs were also custom made to replace the original ones.
The tractor is an early 50's Oliver 88.

I love this set up. I prefer it to the bandsaw mills and the swing blade mills. PTO powered .

Can't say I have much time on a band mill, so I don't know how they feel, but I do know that this one is a lot of fun to run.

My Belsaw is almost Identical, my carriage is 14 feet, three headblocks, 54 inch inserted tooth blade. I have four blades the smallest 44 inch, the largest 54 inch, and two 48 inch, I have set it up for one man 5000 bf per 8 hour run time, Configured with belt conveyors for lumber and slabwood extraction, log turner, stationary diesel, under the mill sawdust conveyor 50 feet long on an incline. etc. The mill is 45 feet long

It sounds like you have a really sweet setup. Maybe we'll add some of those things when we decide to stop messing around. Thanks for watching!
@stevelindsay3643
@stevelindsay3643 7 жыл бұрын
Two things that quadrupled my output was the board conveyors and the Log Turner. The log Turner is 4 5 inch casters, that hinge up in front of the saw carriage. One guy with a cant-hook can turn just about any diameter log,. The log turns from the saw face rolling on the caster to ready the next side to saw.

5000 ft is ridiculous for a mill like this, I’d be lucky to get 1500 a day with 2 people

Walk around the front of that rear tractor tire to shut it down. Your pant legs are exposed to open turning PTO shaft. That will grab quicker than chit and you'll be mince meat wrapped around that shaft. Saw my brother get his jeans ripped off at the knee before you could blink an eye. We looked at each other and never said a word. He was white as a sheet and shaking like a leaf. Dropped everything and went to the house and changed clothes and was done for the day. The old saying is true. A couple extra steps ain't gonna kill ya.
@21mph12
@21mph12 6 жыл бұрын
That Oliver 88 has a very wide stance, and I was much farther away from the shaft than it may appear. Look again and you'll see that I was behind the lifting arms, which themselves splay out and away from the power take off shaft. Safety is a personal choice, and personally, I choose to stay away from the shaft.

Love watching you'll run this mill... how much does a mill like this one cost? If you dont mind sharin
@21mph12
@21mph12 6 жыл бұрын
This one was $500, but it was not in great condition. It was pretty much sitting in the dirt with the blade buried about 7" into the ground. This is a different blade, the carriage has been reworked, and other things had to be given some TLC before it could be ran.

i just bought a homemade sawmill, and was wondering about the log kickbacks, due to a boxy log causing the log to pinch,the saw blade,since mine does not have any hold down dogs, but i see that you have a knife blade behind the saw blade to prevent the swaddled from being pinched, great idea!
@jeremiah4248
@jeremiah4248 5 жыл бұрын
You definitely want to have that knife blade or fin behind the saw. My grandpa told me a board, catching on the saw near the end of the cut, flew back towards him and almost killed him. Ever since that he built in as big a fin as possible and close to the saw as possible and he never had that problem again

What is the brown stain from? Can it be milled out?
@21mph12
@21mph12 5 жыл бұрын
The brown stain was some rot in the middle of the log that wasn't apparent when we started. At 3:03 you can see me stick my finger in the hole when I notice it. The next board was pretty trashed, so that's why I rotated the log at 3:45. To me, narrower boards with bad edges were better than wide boards with rot in the middle. The lumber was still really nice even with the bad spot. Thanks for watching!

The video is a little deceiving since I was never near the shaft at any point. When I disengage the PTO, I always stay outside the lifting arms which splay out and away from the shaft. What's safe for one person may not be safe for another. It nearly always boils down to knowing your equipment, being aware of the environment, and having an accurate estimation of your abilities.

Excellent video buddy is a real engineering I am building a sawmill like this in my ranch but I do not know how to make the reversible system for the logs car , could you help me with some plane or scheme? Thank you so much!!!
@21mph12
@21mph12 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think I can help you with the plans though. You can try searching "Foley-Belsaw A14" or "Foley-Belsaw M14" and you might be able to find a closeup of the reversing system. Sorry that I can't do more for you, but good luck with your mill.

Thanks for the reply. I like your videos. That mill looks like it can be scary, myself I'd have a hard time breaking myself of my habit of reaching for things. I've never seen red cedar in a tree or log, only in a piece of finished furniture. I must be living a sheltered life ;) Keep up the good work.
