Learn historic keyboard improvisation:

Dr. John Mortensen presents a workshop at Michigan State University College of Music during the College Music Society Conference, March 2015. The topic is how "jazz thinking" -- awareness of underlying harmonic progressions -- opens doors to learning the Baroque improvisatory practices of figuration preludes and divisions on a ground.

I SO appreciate everything you are doing to bring back improvisation. I had a teacher who taught me to expand hymns, but everything else was "by the book." I'm working to teach my own students to do this from very early on, but I still have so much to learn myself. Looking forward to your book.

7:01 I've been improvising for almost 10 years now, and when I improvise, I do play notes that fit the chord I am on, or sometimes notes that don't "necessarily" fit. It depends on what vibe I want to produce for myself and the listener. I am aware of each chord that I play, or rather, each chord that I'm "on", but I don't speak in my skull. I don't think in my head. There is no chatter. Perhaps saying the chord in your mind is the first stepping stone, the next may be learning how to shut the fuck up. Who knows? Edit: I recommend checking out some interviews of famous Jazz musicians.

The last part made me feel so vindicated in my thinking that every single chamber-music concert must have a group-improvisation section.

Jazz thinking often makes you understand things a lot better ... But some classical teachers don't know jazz harmony all that well ... I remember my teacher telling me to go from a flat 6 when she really meant a flat augmented 6th ... I was looking for an a flat triad with an added 6th, f, in this case. Also the octotonic scale that Stravinsky uses I always thought of as diminished ... One of two types: one starting on a whole tone and another starting on a semitone. The terms in Jazz harmony often causes an ultimate mix up amongst classical instructors and performers ...

If my teacher in theory at the conservatory here had asked me to play just those first bars of Wohltemperiertes C-Major in reverse, in F# minor etc. I think I would have softened up and forgot my nerves. I was so tense, I gave up but later got a Master in music.

jazz is not the answer. mozart and beethoven did not know jazz and they improvised just fine, nobody trained them, either you've got the gift or you don't. today we have a crisis of composers, not performers. no composers of great renown have come out of a music conservatory.
