@@jimlahey5623 Elmax,M390 etc, are the last steels you want in a survival knife. They are way to hard and brittle which also brings more disadvantages. 52100 (ballbearing), 50100b (Ka/Bar's steel isn't 1095, it's Carbon V or else 50100b), 5160 etc steels, are far more ideal, that's why Esee,Ka-Bar, Tops, Morakniv,Extrema Ratio,Lionsteel all use softer steels on their survival knives. COS is the better option for Fallkniven, Elmax if you drop the knife, the tip will break easily.

Agree with your points here; if money is no object, I'd have several of these knives, but it is, so I don't. I do know a couple people that swear by this company, however there is plenty of other knives out there that are just as good and without the issue of price and a weak warranty. Appreciate the review, Pete.

@@jps4737 Fallkniven? No, they are overpriced Cold Steel to me, although Cold Steel is not exactly value for money in Australia either. Their Trail Master knock offs are not much different to Cold Steel's. The one with the flat grind is the only sensible. The one with the saber grind is just a sharpened log splitter tool - useless. I now collect folders and have moved away from overpriced big knifes.

Fore the price point of these knives I personally think they could manufacture them here in Sweden. We have a long tradition of making blades, originally swords and weapon manufacturing but also kitchen cutlery and scissors. Not much of it left but the knowledge is still there, and the steel production in Sweden is also a good one;-) But i also understand the fact that to make something exclusive you have to have a high price point.

Couple things... I’ve used the warranty twice. It was incredible. Shipped me a new knife to the USA in 3 days! And paid for return postage. They will send clips and washers for folders free as well. I have fucked up the finger guard on an a1 standard. The pro is a welcome upgrade. Next cos is the shit! Awesome stainless steel. It’s expensive to make knives in Japan, but they have the BEST steels. Also the pro kit, as in the box sheath stone and knife is warranted for life. I guess only if you buy the set. Just got my F1x and love it, love it so much I'm selling my standard A1 as I got it years ago and never really had a use for it. Fallkniven are expensive but you only need to buy it once. I have also owned a A2 and a S1 but have sold the A2 as it was too big for any practical use for me if I need to get into log I use an axe I mostly use my knives for hunting not bushcraft or survival. I think most people including myself got carried away with survival and survival knives its just not realistic if I were lost or injured while outdoors in the bush I would just hit the PLB gps beacon and just wait for rescue is more realistic scenario for me. I have one of the earliest versions of the A1. It has a non-laminated VG10 blade and a kydex "dangler style" sheat. I also have the F1 and S1 w/leather sheat. My choice would def. Be the S1. The F1 is to thick to be that small (what she said) And the A1 is to big and heavy/clumsy, without offering much more than the S1, due to it beeing "short for its size. (Here we go again) I think the S1 is a perfect do it all knife, that could do fine in a emergency/survival role. Like that would ever happen... I don't quite get the steel choice for the A1, as it is more of a chopper style knife. But then again, it's what Hattori makes i guess. GREAT customer service btw. I mailed them some questions, and Peter answered me personally, whit a long, informative and polite mail.

20 years ago I got the standard F1, and it came with a nice wraparound black leather sheath. Then I got the standard A1 that came with a leather drop sheath. I just recently picked up an S1 Pro, and ordered a leather drop sheath from Lamnia that dresses it up, and added a ranger band and firesteel to it. After I bought it I started thinking that since I have large hands that I should have bought the S1X instead, as I heard its handle is slightly longer. (?). Plus I could eventually add aftermarket scales to it, but agree with you that the Pro seems pretty nice, and I feel it’s strong enough for my use, although I can see why people would like the more balanced 50 gram plus weight of the X series. My sole objection is that with large hands that lanyard hole on the Pro is fairly useless, but that’s not a big thing. I like that I can hold it in cold temps comfortably. By the way, 20 years ago I was lucky enough to get in on a group buy on a knife site with a Fallkniven rep, and also got an NL5 and NL4, a Frei and an Idun. The 5” NL4 and S1 easily use the same leather drop sheath, although the NL knives both came with wraparound style leather sheaths. I think if I could only choose one Fallkniven it would be the NL4, although in practical applications you could do more hard use work with an A1. I appreciate your detailed (and very humorous intro!) comparison on the three standard lines, haven’t seen that anywhere else. 👍

2:03 I think the A1 standard is good value actually. I own it myself and it is one of the best ones I've ever had. Currently cost around EUR 210, AUD 345, USD 250. I own knives twice the price and are not better than this one. Not a tiny bit. The thickness is just perfect for it's lenght and is very well made. Anything else is just too overpriced and not even better. The pro series is too thick in my oppinion. They should have stayed with the same thickness but updated steel. A1 standard is CoS, 3G or CPM 3V, man, I would get it no matter the costs.

One of the earliest knife reviews I seen of yours was a fallkniven I’m always so close to buying being a sucker for a drop point and they have done a sexy career of using it right. as a steel nerd i find it very hard to get to grips with fallkniven's line-up - because A2, F1, H1, S1, SK1, SK2, SK6 and V1 are all steel grades, and i find myself attributing spurious qualities to the knife models through association with that steel. for example, you say A2L and i think "wow, A2 steel's the bomb when given the right heat tr- ...wait, that's one of the VG10 ones".

Hi! As a swede i did not take an offense if he tried to impersonate a swede. Good prenounciation on Fällkniven. A stands for Arme' as in army and L for lång as in long. S stands for Skogs as in wood/bushcraft. An last F stands for Flygare as in Aircrew. This was their first knife in this series. They changed the edge from the beggining it was flat with a coarse V. Changed to flat with a convex edge. Have both, redid the older one to convex, it is not so sharp as the later one. But the edge will be more sturdy. I hope this will help You a little.

Survival knives, a very personal decision which will vary with age and experience. So, a self designed and self made knife guaranteed what I wanted. Trouble is, when it came time to use it in earnest, I couldn't bring myself to batter my baby. Enter the S1x which came closest to my design brief. No problems here with beating the crapola out of the CoS. Positive value is when the benefits outweigh the disadvantages, but because we all put a different value on the components of benefit and disadvantage, the equation will be different for each one of us. Al Mar and the old Blakjack were some of the first to start the trent of buying high end Japanese knives to their design and badging them. Fallkniven taken this to the next level. Warranty is typical European/Japanese type where its limited. In truth why should a company pay for people being complete thugs? The US warranty model has become very accommodating but that comes at a cost: either added to the price or taken out of the product. Warranties are a cost and not free, somehow the customer is paying for them. No doubt the Fallkniven knives are well made and of stout design. They are riding the wave of popularity for tough combat/survival/utility/bushcraft products. I have to say I'm a succour for combat/utility knives too. Here comes the "but". The Kar-Bar, SRK, combat/utility knife can be the least useful knife to own because as a jack of all trades they do most things poorly. Not big enough to chop, not keen enough to cut, and on the big side to do all those little tasks that a folder can do so much better. I think the "one tool option" thing is pants. However, "blokes" will always buy into them. Is thick stock blades really that clever? If the new steels are that much better why do the knives need to be so thick too?? It seems the Fallkniven are made with a good amount of luck built in so should last. They are thick enough. Enough to survive long enough to carry the history of anyone's adventures. Thats a big plus. I'm unsure how well they keep their looks, or if carry the patina from use well. Many modern knives get to look rough fairly fast and don't do the "veteran" look well. Fallkniven owners can chip in here. Some of my Japanese made quality knives have done well. Not everyone I've had had the luck. Improvements in steel should give even more confidence that the older stuff. Though I'm a Brit, I think some of the USA top end made knives might actually be better??? With so many manufacturers, and quality differences, then its not easy to say what is good, what has plenty of luck built in. Buying into the reputation is the best one can do and Fallkniven has a solid reputation. I'm not trying to have a go at Fallkniven. Its just I haven't found a reason to get one yet. In truth struggling with both design and cost when there is so much competition; plus I have good knives already.

I just can't get past the price here in the US. When a NL3 is $400 right now and I just picked up a Bark River Bravo II in 3V for $280, it's hard not to wonder. Both are great convex grinds from companies that build top tier survival knives, one just costs a third less with premium steel.

I still think you get good value for your money with the original S1, and A1 knives. They can still be found new on the American market today for around $158, and $186 repectively. Most American knives out of plain old 1095 are running $120 or $130, so why not spend a little extra for the laminated stainless vg10, and the Fallkniven quality.

Fallkniven finally has a "budget" option. The Taiga Forester 2. Just got one for $140 USD, is about the size of the S1, the good Zytel sheath, and still in COS steel. I like the enclosed handle just cause it keeps my hand isolated from the cold steel in winter. I personally don't see any reason to buy any of the other knives. You can get better price to performance smaller knives from places like Varusteleka and still have the great enclosed handle for cold weather, but having a very tough, cold resistant, and nearly rust proof knife is amazing and much harder to find under $200. Fallkniven may finally be learning.

I know that these are popular survival knives. But the s1 Falkniven and the a1 pro have failed in tests I've seen. The hilt came loose on the A1 pro after batoning some wood. While it split it fast the hilt came loose. Plus if people trust these knives watch Survival Lilly test and review her s1 falkniven laminated steel knife she tested for a survival situation. It totally failed and just looked up the A1 pro obtaining wood. that came loose and failed. These knives are sharp but are fragile and they chip and the tips break easily. I use my cold steel srk San Mai knife in my camping and survival training and it's never broken or chipped. And never came loose. I know that Falkniven has cult fans but just watched Survival Lilly's review ad and don't trust these Fakniven knives in a bug-out bag. Or emergency kit.

Why is your music choices always amazing?? Edit: hey Pete have you ever heard of Down Under Knives? I've always wanted one but they are kinda spendy for me. They make an exact working replica knife of crocodile dundee but they also have a ton of cool fixed blades with awesome aussie names! I would love to see you review one!

Very funny intro. I like the F1 as a survival knife because of it's slim profile but the handle is to thin for me for prolonged use. In fact the only handle I like so far is that of the H1. I like the beefy handle for my XL size gloves hands. Also the H1 is not tapered down and has no swedge making it a strong point. I have no real problem with zytel sheaths but preferred the old kydex ones. There are kydex sheaths available for the F1 (different maker) but this adds to the price of course on these not cheap knives. Good review.

The closet one to being a “value” I have seen is the basic F1 with leather sheath for a bit over $100. In a bigger knife I would rather either carbon steel or maybe N690 or a well done D2 in a less expensive knife than the large Fallkniven’s.

Falkniven are expensive and get complaints for price because where they are made taxes are high!!! Very much more of the profits are lost in translation! The simple thermorun for so much money hurts. But it's designed for cold weather use. I'd say most of the money you pay is in the laminated steel and hand ground convex, which machines can't do. That only leaves room to save on sheathes and handles which is knife enthusiasts bread and butter after steel alloy.

Fallkniven finally designed a sheath that does not use the strap around the handle which has always been an irritation to me. The rattle of the sheath is still a concern. The size of the small handles should also be addressed. Then when SHTF and desperate survivors escaping bondage collapse on your doorstep begging for a blade to slice all cordage into 1/2 inch pieces you can tell them GTFO (Get The Fallkniven Out).

I have the A1 and put it trough some hard task, batoning thick hard logs : not a problem. Did the same with a Ontario BK9 and the edge/bevel came back all wavy ~~ on a 2 cm spot (the steel actually conformed to the shape of the wood fibers, permanently: too soft 1095? ). Anyways, fallkniven are good knives. Major downside is their prices that go high very quickly.

Blows my mind but, people have it in their minds that 1095 is a “tough” steel, and it’s not that tough haha, many tougher steels out there, they just use it because it’s cheap. Plus your A1 is laminated making the blade more robust.

Not a fan of the x series looks, you’re right in that I’m assuming they’re shooting for the Esee type of market. Never liked those knives and if you say that their cult following roasts you. Had a few and you’re paying a huge price for 1095 steel, I’d rather buy a bk2, Kabars 1095 crovan and heat treatment is superior and cheaper.
@pubplays368

“Superior and cheaper”. Cheaper yes, superior? No. Not even close. Beckers will snap on you all day. Esees will not. Cro van has the potential to be the better steel. But kabar has a lackluster heat treat. Thus rendering it useless. Esees have full tangs. Kabars have skeletonized tangs. Esee has the best warranty in the world. You’re lucky if kabar responds in 48 hours. I’ll stick with lt wright overall for my knives. Best designs and heat treat on the market. Or Carothers. He makes the best 3v knives.

I found the review on the lack of prowess of the A1 pro knife hilt coming loose. Look up big brown bear review on the A1 pro. He used it to baton wood and did what you’d need to do in an emergency survival situation. The falkniven knives are dung imo. All hype vs function. Stick with the cold steel san mai srk or 3v srk. These knives fail every time i see them doing what they’re famous for
