This is such a beautiful song. I was particularly impressed with this performance because he sang the ending WITHOUT his microphone....a testament to the power of his voice. Dimash performed this during his time on "Singer" in 2017 (which I think is his most exquisite performance of this song). And then, he performed the Japanese version (Ikanaide) for the Tokyo Jazz Festival in 2021. Hugs to you, Cedric.

She hid her Japanese heritage under the name Li XIanglan and became famous in China. However, when the war was over and she revealed her identity, she was accused of being a spy. She was deported to Japan and longed for China. Ms. Yamaguchi did not return to China until many years as deputy environment minister in the Japanese parliament. After WWII, her heritage was exposed, she was arrested, accused of being a japanese spy, and sentenced to death. She was ultimately cleared of charges, but was advised to leave the country, as she risked being lynched. Cedric, it is always a pleasure to see your analysis and reaction. I note that you realized afterwards that this shares the common melody with the Japanese version Ikanaide. The lyrics are different in the two languages and Dimash interprets both beautifully. I have listened to Ikanaide so many times, it is one of my favourites. Although the melody is the same the words are quite different and the words shapes, length and sounds in Mandarin necessitate alternate phrasing and emphasis. This was beautiful and compared to his performance on I am Singer was masterful. Of course then he was much younger and singing in Chinese for the first time made him nervous. Now his experience and more mature voice and stage presence make it an even more incredible journey for us.

Just FYI, Ikanaide and Autumn Strong are two entirely different songs. The melody is the same but the lyrics and meaning of the songs are not the same. Ikanaide was written as a soft then strong plea of desperation for a loved one not to leave. Autumn Strong was later written in Mandarin lyrics as a theme song for a tv docudrama about a Chinese born actress of Japanese heritage who was deported from China after WWII. The song was meant to have a melancholy feel of Autumn as the last part of life and inevitability of fate in having to leave one's home. Dimash sings each different song perfectly as the two writers intended. Go back and listen to Ikanaide and then Autumn Strong again. You will FEEL the difference in the two emotions.
