When I would rap I would keep a notebook full of punchlines. If I ever got stuck or needed to start the verse off hard, I'd grab a punchline. Then it got to the point where I'd hear Juelz, Fab, Cassidy say a line I came up with. Of course they didn't steal it from me, and my rhymes were 3 weeks old by the time I heard the newest Clue tape so I didn't steal it from them either. He’s telling the truth times were different back then the door wasn’t wide open for Black comics so things were very cutthroat. There were soooooo many amazing stand up comics that never “made it” who heavily “influenced” the ones that did happened way too often. The comics that made it had to sacrifice friendships and dignity for stereotypical buffoon roles written by white men who would ask these comics to “act more Black” in auditions and scenes.

A lot of comics think alike, and a lot of comics have writers, and some comics 'hack.' If you 'run in certain circles,' comedians know your 'brand,' your style, by the same token, there is a modecum of respect that goes with that...I have been in a club and a comic in front of me got onstage and (attempted) to do a bit I wrote, my partners knew that I'd written it...he mentioned the subject but he couldn't finish it, I went up next and did the bit. Comedians use writers and I respect that because you can't think of everything, however...I've written bits and seen other comics write same or similar, now i have a decision to make, do I tell the joke or write something else; sometimes it comes down to who gets to the stage first or who gets the bigger audience/bigger name. I believe if you 'pay attention in class,' meaning look around you, ' there is so much out here to write about. I love writers/thinkers, and yeah, respect. Thanks for the platform, Tap N' Clips.
