Really enjoyed the video. Watched the whole thing. Have been experimenting with this myself prior to watching the video. My daughter’s room and the guest room are like 8 degrees lower than our bedroom down the hall. Currently have the hot room running counter clockwise one in the guest room fan (no fan in her room) running clockwise. Temperatures are higher in the bedrooms but not equal, at least more comfortable. Very much into being energy sufficient, more for my wallet instead of the environment. Can’t wait to see more videos

I like the dipswitches.. So that when you loose power the fan doesnt forget which controller it goes to. Also no annoying combination of buttons to program it.

Hi Corbett, nice informational video. I installed a 72” fan in a room (420sq. Ft) w/ cathedral ceiling 13’ high with a drop rod length of 2’, the fan is 10’ from the floor now. Is that ok or should I drop it another foot closer to the floor yo make it 9’ above the floor. It just looks like it a little higher than the rest of the fans in the house that are about 9’ from the floors.

I think that sounds fine, Rohan- as long as there’d enough breathing room between the fan and ceiling, you should be good!

All of your fans are running in the pull vs push direction. I have always wanted to understand which was best. I was hoping to see something in this video about that. Is it an interesting enough topic for you to make a video about?

Hey Tom- interesting q. Simple answer is to direct them to blow on you (to cool down) vs. to blow away from you (to circulate, and keep you warm simultaneously). Most manuf call it summer and winter mode.

Do you have suggestions on the best low-cost efficient ceiling fans? It seems like the main companies making high efficiency fans (haiku and fanimation) are also basically luxury brands. I'm frustrated that I can't get a basic ceiling fan with blades that aren't flat paddles. I recognize that there are other elements to an efficient fan (eg DC motors) but I imagine the largest is really the fan blades. I've never seen retrofit blade options either.

I believe it’s the whole package, and these are ~$600 each. For something I’m planning on running continuously for decades, I’d take seriously the saying ‘you get what you pay for.’ No bright ideas from our pov on how you’d make them cheaper without losing quality. PS- Haiku is considerably more expensive than these, and yes I would call that one ‘overpriced’.

@@HomePerformance Just as an FYI, I just went down a ceiling fan rabbithole, and it seems that the market has changed a bit since the last time I looked, just a few years ago. I can't speak to quality, but there are now some fan options (just looking at Home Depot, for instance) that are $130-$300 with around 300 CFM/W. For comparison yours are 420 CFM/W, and my standard old-school 52" paddle fan is 75 CFM/W. That said, I'm looking at 52" fans vs yours are massive 84". It's nice to know there are options, at least, but I hear you on getting quality components that will last.

Thanks for sharing. Would you advise on using this for a 22ft vaulted ceiling? Heat gets trapped up there and we're trying to circulate that heat better.

I was strongly considering Big Ass Fans since they seemed to be the best-balanced and highest quality fans I could find. The price made my eyes water, but I couldn't find anything else with anything as reputable. I'll have to look more into these. They're beautiful. Now that you've had them for a while, are they still quiet and good quality?

Yes, superb. I also heard, fyi, that BAF residential Haiku line contains off-the-shelf components.

@@HomePerformance That's what I heard too. They sold the residential line to I forget who too, so I've been more willing to expand my horizons for manufacturers. The name alone, BAF, suits my sense of humor though

I am building a traditional adobe home in Arizona's high desert. The climate is fairly moderate - not the scorching heat of Phoenix nor the bitter cold of high mountain towns. It is a modest 1400 square foot house and only one story. I went to great lengths to provide cross-ventilation with high transom windows across the room from the cool air registers. I also plan to install some in-ceiling vent fans to serve the same function during the winter when it is too cold to vent with open windows. Since I will not have volume ceilings, I doubt that I need circulation fans. Do you know of any way of modelling airflow (without paying an engineer a gajillion dollars to do it for me) to find out how my proposed system works BEFORE I build the house?

Airflow is finnicky and unpredictable, Linda- there is no way to model as you suggest that I know of, but of course the one thing I’d point out is that the wind must blow for cross ventilation to work. If you know about average daily wind conditions, you should be good to go. However, these can work even with 8’ ceilings.
