Many folks are asking the question about their ceiling fans, what direction should they be turning? You can save money on your energy bill by having them set the right way. What direction should your ceiling fan spin in the winter vs. the summer? Here are the answers.

I’ve always been told on winter they should be blowing down, heat rises so you want to push the warm air back down

Thank you!!’ The clockwise/counterclockwise seems confusing, seems relative. Where is 6 o’clock? But up for updraft, down for downdraft seems right. In the up position, I can hardly feel a breeze but in the down position, I can feel a cooling effect. I think I can set my fan properly now. I was not confident before, kept changing the switch, got confused, and it all seems counterclockwise to me.

Well. I have two fans, and it's not clockwise or counter-clockwise since they are opposite. It's about the blades; do they cut up (rotate with the higher side gong first) or cut down? Cut up for cooling, cut down for warming. It was easy to figure out with one fan because it has the up and down switch consistent with the direction of the air flow. The other has a side to side switch and the spin is opposite of my first fan.

@FieldGuidetoDIY
@FieldGuidetoDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Well, it depends, E. Which way are the blades angled or pitched? Not all blades are angled the same way. Do you want the room cooler or hotter? On most fans clockwise in the Winter; counterclockwise in the Summer.
@gingersasquatch94

I have a question. If I'm using air conditioning through the floor vents, wouldn't an updraft help more effectively spread that cooler air? The breeze effect is less important to me than how quickly the room is cooled by the air conditioning and I wonder if it is essentially fighting the air conditioning by pushing the cooler air down and not letting it spread.
@FieldGuidetoDIY
@FieldGuidetoDIY 10 ай бұрын
What a great question. I’m thinking your floor registers (the vents) are along the walls while the ceiling fan is in the center of the ceiling. I believe the two are not fighting each other but are actually working in concert with each other; that is, the registers blow UP and the ceiling fan blows DOWN creating circular air flow/movement. I hope this helps.

This is about moving air making you feel cooler versus the actual room being cooler for example if you have it so it sucks warm air it limit how cool you can get is based on the temperature off the coldest air in the room having the fan blowing directly on you can make you feel cooler until it gets too hot and then it just starts circulating hot air just like a normal fan and this will happen quick because hot air rises but I do believe at the end of the day if it gets too hot you end up just circulating that air anyway whichever direction the blades are going that is that point when fans stop working I prefer to actually have a fan on the floor than a ceiling fan and have it blowing up and then maybe get a second fan to blow that air around the room It is really cheap 2p an hour

@ANGELBOBS_YT
@ANGELBOBS_YT 2 жыл бұрын
you are blowing down warm air meaning the people around you suffer lol the advantages of blowing down fans is if you happen to be directly under it it's great but if not it's best to go the other way so it air conditioners the room by putting the hot air at the top in fact what would be better if you actually had a hole in the ceiling because the fan would act as an extractor fan in fact I've been that's one of the answers for keeping the house cool other than installation and instructor fan pump the hot air out all together if you got a hatch open it It moves the top of the house to the loft

@FieldGuidetoDIY

Understood but the principal is the same. The air traveling outward during cooler months will warm the room. I understand that limited clearance between the fan and a hot metal ceiling may not give the desired cooling affect. Thanks for the reminder and thanks so much for watching.
