I grew up in the sticks. No cable, but comics were still mass media. That comic WAS G1 for a lot of us.

At one time I had all the Marvel issues 1-80 plus the Universe, Headmasters, Movie Adaptation, and vs. G.I. Joe. These were some truly amazing thoughtful dramatic stories that were told. With slight tweaking to dialogue, these stories would make an incredible animated miniseries or show.

it's crazy the amount of people that thing TF was an existing show in Japan that just got dubbed over in the US, they don't realize this comic is what created all the lore we know and was then used in the cartoon and then brought back over to Japan last
@KazuyaMithra
@KazuyaMithra Ай бұрын
Well, it made the basic lore, but they're totally separate continuities that had little to do with each other. Takara chose to follow Hasbro's rebranding after it proved successful and made their own serialized manga, like Tomy did with Zoids after Marvel UK reinvented their robot kits.
@stankyyboi
@stankyyboi Ай бұрын
@@KazuyaMithra being different continuities is completely irrelevant. Hasbro contracted Marvel to create all the lore and names for the toys they were bringing back from Japan, that info was then used to make the comic while they were ramping up production of the cartoon. There was no Optimus vs Megatron, no war on Cybertron, no Autobots or Decepticons(not even the logos), no energon...there was NOTHING except a bunch of random toys before Marvel created it all

@@stankyyboi Different continuities is entirely relevant because it means its limited by its audience and exposure, everyone knows they made the terminology and basic premise of the franchise. They also made the first stories, but said stories were only limited to certain regions while the UK and Japan had separate ones (Japan didn't even use the same terminology, it shared the same premise and cast and that's it). It was a self contained comic run to boot. It's not like the Marvel comics are the gospel of Transformers, it was just the first iteration that started the template others followed. They certainly didn't CREATE the Transformers no more than anyone else did, because Transformers was always more than the sum of its parts chalking it up to just one or a handful of individuals is definitely misguided. If any piece were missing then the franchise wouldn't be the same. Also, before Marvel they weren't just "a bunch of toys." They still had their own fiction in magazine promos and manga. The only thing Transformers did differently was having an increased marketing budget and exposure that Diaclone lacked. It wasn't even the first sentient robot series. Imagine if the marvel comics and TV show didn't pan out, it'd be seen as a quaint localization effort to release Japanese toys in America.

@@KazuyaMithra I'm not entirely sure what your point is or what you're trying to defend. the fact is there was no "Transformers" in Japan before Hasbro and Marvel did what they did, it doesn't matter if Takara took the basics and went in their own direction and made their own interpretations of things. my original comment was about people thinking this show existed in Japan and that America just dubbed over it and how that's entirely 100% false and then you come in with some weird wannabe pedantic argument that really doesn't make any sense.

The beginning of the marvel comics, the headmasters, and the g2 runs; that’s what I grew up with. Man it’s wild that it’s been 40 years.

IMO, the Marvel run remains, in many ways, the best TF fiction - Beast Wars comes close at times. As much as I enjoyed the G1 cartoon the comics had the "real" stories.

I would love for these stories to be made into an animated series. Updated a bit of course.

One thing that's interesting, Toei was developing the cartoon at the same time as the comic, and their subcontractor Kaname Productions artist Shohei Kohara was the only one who made character designs for Transformers before Marvel issue 1. So that's why the main 8 Autobots and Decepticons all mostly resemble the animation, while others like Ironhide and such resemble the toy, because Marvel didn't have anything else to go off of.

Back in the Summer of '84, I was lucky enough to find a first issue in the wild, and took it on my summer road trip. Every red semi truck on the highway looked to me like an Optimus in disguise! There is no way to explain the excitement this book created in my imagination!

My older brother had the first 2 trade paperbacks of the original Marvel comics. I think they covered issues 1-8. However far into the comics it was when Buster started talking to Prime's severed head. The bindings on the books were giving out by the time my brother gave them to me. Pages were falling out. I spent at least a day the 90s trying to put the pages back in the correct order based on the context of the story. I think I still have them in a drawer somewhere.

Got a poster of that #1 signed by Jim Shooter and Bob Budiansky. Bob was at TFCon and Jim was at Baltimore Comic Con right next door. Jim said Bob had better pixelation on his poster (from blowing up the image), but that his card stock was better.

I've just started the third run through the Marvel books. It's superb for the most part. It gets a bit dodgy towards the end of Bob's run, but overall its very good. The UK stuff is the best though with the way they branch off and use the Movie to underpin their stories. Much more sci-fi. The US stuff starts getting a little kiddie and cheesey, but then Simon Furman rescues it.

I do have the number one issue of this comic book. But I'm not sure if it's a copy or a decent original. And I wonder how much it would be worth in today's 24.
