I'm glad that you introduced the Japanese culture of Shino and Oribe.

I resigned yesterday (with bonus for the relational flubs happening lately), so I'm feeling pretty "imperfect" and was drawn in by the title. 😅 By the time I'd heard about "sabi" and heard the bowl described as "alone, austere, and beautiful in its imperfections," I knew I'd come to the right place. Dr. Coman: ...something artlessly beautiful. Dr. Zucker: In some ways, it's a lie. 😂😭 I understand the point made, but wasn't expecting that. It is very interesting, though! Using more effort and technique to create something "imperfect" that can be uniquely appreciated among its "perfect" counterparts. I so want to hold this bowl and feel the rough / smooth textures of it. I also love the overlapping fans serving dish.

Was this made on a wheel it looks like it could be a coil bowl. Is really pretty though.

I am thinking of the Chinese 'cracked bowl' art form where the bowl was considered to valuable to discard and was enhanced by mending the cracks with gold. Perhaps this bowl, too, although deformed by perhaps a temper tantrum or rough handling, was considered too valuable to discard, and was still decorated. What seems like an art form to us, may have been the art of non-waste and re-use, or up-cycling?
