Actually the reason they only ate oysters in months that ended in ‘R’ was because in the warmer months there was “Red Algae” that was poisonous. Now the oysters are farm raised and we no longer have that concern. Thought you might want to know. 🙂

My family in West Virginia always had oyster stew on Christmas Eve. My mom continued the tradition. I like the warm milky broth but never liked the oysters themselves. Believe it or not, Campbell's used to make a great canned oyster stew that tasted like mommas. Just add a can of milk and lots of pepper. I made it often but only ate the broth. They quit making it several years ago. Sad. Tipper, you make all of us feel like we are part of your family. Thank you for sharing your life, family and ways with us.

My Mother-in-Law used to make Oyster Stew for Christmas Eve, but in later years she would prepare things that could be made ahead of time, like Ham Salad, Cheesy Potatoes, Coleslaw, various pies, cookies, candies galore. As an Irish Catholic, I was always told we weren't allowed to eat meat the eve before a religious holiday. So we ate a fish stew. Apparently they carried the tradition to America but used oysters. It's our family tradition and we love it! We also make it the exact way Matt does. Personally, I like a dash of Frank's Red Hot in mine.

Glad to hear you and your family share the same traditions as me. ❤. Mom did not like the oysters 🦪 and she ate the stew only. 😂 so strange. Hahaha 😝 That meant more oysters 🦪 for us 😊. My mama grew up in the Ozark Mountains and she always made oyster stuffing. Man it was the best stuffing you'd ever eat in your life! I would drive all the way back to town the day after Christmas just to eat leftover stuffing cold. I was born and raised in South Texas so I don't really know where the recipe came from other than it was started from when she was a child up in The Ozarks. Mama's been gone 18 years now and I never got over losing her so young but watching ya'll with all your loved ones brings happiness to my heart. God Bless

I really really enjoyed this video and the 100 year one. I liked the bumble bees and all the flowers I've never seen before. Thank you for generously allowing us to walk in your footsteps and get a feeling of what our kin got to experience. They wondered about us in the future and we wonder about them in the past. May God bless you and America, the land that we love.
