The Native American myth of the White Bison is a sacred story particularly significant to the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota (Sioux) tribes. This legend centers around White Buffalo Calf Woman, a spiritual being who brought important cultural and spiritual teachings to the people. According to the myth, two young Lakota men encountered White Buffalo Calf Woman while hunting. One of the men disrespected her and was turned into bones, while the other showed her respect and was instructed to tell his people that she would visit them. When she arrived, White Buffalo Calf Woman gave the Lakota the sacred ceremonial pipe and taught them seven sacred ceremonies, which include practices for purification, healing, and maintaining harmony with the earth. White Buffalo Calf Woman promised to return one day and bring peace and unity to the world. She transformed into a white buffalo calf before leaving, which is why the birth of a white buffalo is considered a sacred and significant event. This rare occurrence is seen as a sign of hope and renewal.

It is just a leucistic or albino bison. That happens in nature, but they rarely survive to adulthood because they don't blend in, no protection color.

@@anntunaley9974 I don't care nor believe in any prophecies. It's only a leucistic bison, that occurs in many species of animals including snakes, orcas, moose and so on. Albinism is complete lack of pigmentation, leucism is a condition of partial lack of pigmentation, which this calf has. It is odd, because it is genetic mutation. Sort of like nature's malfunction. The reason why albino and leucistic animals don't often survive to adulthood is the lack of camo. Albino predators can't hunt as well and herbivores can't hide as well as normal colored ones.

We had a couple buffaloes in Golden Gate Park when I was growing up. I remember one time we stopped and went to look at them and my mom explained that men nearly made the buffalo extinct. I still remember that scene and in my child’s mind I thought, why?

White Buffalo calf is NOT Albino. According to the legend White Buffalo calf woman said the calf would be White but with dark eyes, holves. NOT albino. Indigenous people all over the world have similar legends and prophesies that should be respected and honored. I have Cherokee heritage. My father was born in Hominy Oklahoma and his families names are on the Dawes rolls from the Trail of Tears. He taught me legends, much of the language and to honor mother earth, the creator. What you are referring to are albino buffalos. This is a much rarer true white buffalo with black eyes, a black nose, and black hooves, which matches the legend. A true white buffalo birth is 1 in a million.

I love what the Chief at the end said about Mother Earth having a temperature - that she's sick - and while it's difficult to ascribe "global issues" to a white buffalo calf, it does bring into focus that we are at a cross-roads right now. Our climate IS changing. We need to get away from fossil fuels and find better, alternative ways to power our life-styles. Stop clear cutting trees that provide us with oxygen, stop polluting our waterways/oceans where our drinking water and much of the world's protein (fish) comes from. Again, not putting "the weight of the world" on that little calf, but just seeing it as hope for a better future...

After reading the comments, I am glad I am not the only one crying. This has such a huge meaning. The picture of the man standing on the HUGE pile of buffalo bones is just HORRIFIC! Buffalo are such magnificent beings. I am not Native American however I love their teachings and spirituality. I was very drawn to the White Buffalo Calf Women story when I first heard it and I still am, I have a picture of her hanging on my wall in my house. When I see this calf, I get very emotional.

@@LynetteA68 that could be one reason. I believe they were such selfish, self focused people, that it may never have entered their consciousness. They just didn't care about anything but themselves. I feel a very strong connection with the Indigenous people of this country, that I feel the pain of your ancestors and sense how truly wounded they were in so many ways. I also know the abuses continue to this day.
