Piers had connections to Britain's Got Talent which in turn, opened up new connections to the US via Cowell due to his being a judge on AGT, which bolstered his celebrity status even more. Simply put, Piers had all of these celebrity acquaintances he could rely on, and even if they didn't like him, presumably they'd help him out for charitable purposes.
