Celebrity interviews are often laid-back, casual affairs, with stars answering questions about their latest projects. Even if the interview takes a turn for the personal, it’s usually done in a professional and respectful manner. These… are not those interviews.
Some of these interviewers just did not know what questions were in good taste, while in other cases, the celebrities made things incredibly uncomfortable. Here’s a helpful hint-if you’re trying to rehabilitate your image, maybe don’t yell at the person giving you the airtime to do just that. Let’s take a look at a few celebrities who confronted their interviewer on live TV.

A neurobiologist is a research scientist with a PhD who probably doesn't use calculus every day in her discipline, but had at least an undergraduate year in calculus classes to obtain her first degree. Bill Nye IS NOT a scientist, but a Mechanical Engineer with an MS who, ironically, does use calculus on a daily basis in his work, back when he did it.
@brandoncruise6398
@brandoncruise6398 5 жыл бұрын
Mechanical Engineering is an applied science. No matter what field a person with that degree goes into, science has to be used a lot when coming up with designs, designing equipment/vehicles/buildings/ships/space-ships etc...not to mention practical applications for things everyday people use. Without them 'there's no vehicles, no launchpad, no shuttle, no electricity, no electrical grid, and no running water. So yes, they are scientists. Believe it or not, not all scientists spend their days in the lab. Ever heard of Nicola Tesla?

Somebody doesn't understand the difference between science and engineering. And I don't mean the OP.
@apwith
@apwith 5 жыл бұрын
I don't know Bill Nye, his background or work, so take this with a grain of salt, I'm just going on what has been said here, but... To all those here saying, he is a scientist because he got an engineering degree: science is about the application of the scientific method to model phenomena. Lets unpack this and its implications. A scientist is someone who can do that, or is doing it. A scientist is someone who can, either design or carry out experiments to acquire data about a phenomenon of interest to study it, use his or other scientists' data to verify hypotheses about some phenomena, come up with hypotheses or theories about phenomena to be tested, or infer predictions from theories. (This is not necessarily an exhaustive list, it is a real world activity obviously, with more texture that my little model here shows, but it is enough to give an idea of what I'm talking about.) An engineer designs, builds, tests or fixes machines or mechanisms. This uses the knowledge produced by scientists, but is not science per se. Of course, it is possible to do both at the same time. If you design or build machines where in a domain where the science isn't settled, for instance, such as, for experiments in high energy physics, nanotechnology, biosystems or genetic engineering. So, yes, they might mingle, but they are not the same. It is possible to do a lot of one and almost none of the other. Very theoretical scientific work has negligible engineering in it. Engineering where the science is settled and the predictions have been worked out by others, for example, high up in the fab complex, such as designing new computers. There is a modern tendency to overvalue education, and to take certifications at face value. When you go through an educational program, you are supposed to learn something. The exams you take there and the certification issued are supposed to test what you learned, certify it, and summarise it with some grades. There are several issues with this: grades are an oversimplification, people cheat in diverse ways, and some people are very good at doing homework, doing tests and certifying themselves, but to the extent that the modern educational system does not do apprenticeships, what you do in a modern university is not quite the same as what you do in a profession, so it is possible to do one and not the other. The other side of the coin is that it is possible to learn these professions without going to school, as an apprentice or even an autodidact. So, if Bill Nye has an engineering degree, that does not guarantee that he is a decent engineer, and it definitely says little about his capacity to do science. Unless he failed in his education or cheated, it does mean he probably understands some science that has been researched and published, but that does not mean he can do it. To show a crass example, a lot of people can understand literature, but few of those could write it. Writing a whole novel or book involve complex skills that go beyond writing a few paragraphs well, even. I'm not saying those people couldn't do it if they train or practice, but at the moment, you wouldn't commission a book from someone who has done neither. Finally, and at the risk of ruffling some feathers, I'll add something. A lot of people who worship science, but don't practice it (yes, worship, in the sense of taking their cosmovision, ie, their explanation of the world and their origin story, from science, and of looking for science to provide all their answers and solve all their problems, while resting all their hopes in it), are very invested in broadening the definition of science. Of course, as with priests and laypeople in an institutional religion, there is an asymmetry of power, and nobody like to be at the lower end of one of those. So, the broader the definition, and the more people who are considered "scientists", the more the power is diffused. "Proper scientists" then defend their power by declaring a lot of poor efforts or crackpot theories "psuedoscience". This is equally silly and really unnecessary. It is even contrary to the ideals of science. (If you don't like someone's work, or their misuse of the term science, then critique their work on its technical merits, or ignore, just designating their whole work invalid, by creating a special category for that, like ad hominem attacks, is not a scientific way of arguing against it.) Anybody can and should do science, if they so desire, but it does take some learning and practice. This naked power grab by scientists and their groupies, is beneath the dignity of science. Crucially, it is not just technical knowledge that is needed to do science, it involves a set of attitudes and philosophy, as well as some cognitive skills. While related to the mindset taught to engineers, it is not at all the same. This, of course, does not impede some engineers from learning both. I will reiterate that I am saying little, and claiming nothing, about Bill Nye, whose work I don't know any more than I know him. This is merely about the notion that any engineer is a scientist, or that anybody with an engineering degree is an engineer.
@apwith
@apwith 5 жыл бұрын
Being a scientist has little to do, with where you spend your time (not that the OP claimed that), but with doing, having done, or at least knowing how to do science. Engineering uses scientific results, yes, but that neither proves nor disproves that a particular engineer can do science. Believe it or not, having some level of scientific literacy and being able to apply scientific results does not prove that someone can do science. Yes, I've heard about Nicola Tesla, but, believe it or not, a specific example does not prove a generalisation, it can only disprove one. So, one capable engineer who can't do science, is enough to know that not all of them can (and believe me, I've met plenty), but one who can is just that, one positive example, with no general implications. And that, moreover, since you are so gung ho about science and engineering, is an example of a type of knowledge, rules of inference, that is not super useful for engineers, but quite crucial to scientists. (Not saying that a good engineer wouldn't understand this trivial example, just giving an example of a domain of knowledge which is necessary for mathematicians (who are also not necessarily scientists) and scientists, but only of passing interest to engineers.)
@STho205

Seems like much conversation, likely by people who are neither scientists or engineers (degreed and certified). My family are. My dad was a Mechanical and Electrical engineer, with international credentials and certs, obtained after he mustered out in 1946 and went to UAH. In the 70s he was on accreditation committees for universities. He could really care less about science and pure theory. He hated his chemistry courses and saw physics as only useful Newtonian and static force training. Yet he built and lit the bridges and tunnels you drive on today in the US/Can, UK, and West Germany. I can testify from observation engineering is not applied cutting edge science. Science from 1750 maybe, but not modern science in most cases. I took a doctorate in Chemistry. I do applied science, and I teach. My daughter is working on her degree in BioChemistry. We are quite aware of the differences in personality, passion and walking around knowledge. My guess is Nye bashing has somehow become the an assumed intent from the OP. I'm fine with the man as an engineer and children's TV comic. Mr Nye is an aviation mechanical engineer that left Boeing around 30 because he won a Steve Martin look alike contest. He then went on a comedy circuit and pursued acting in the 1980s. He got a job with Disney channel, so I put him about where I put Jeremy Clarkson, as a comic presenter of technical material. He did offer a device to NASA, a sundial for a Mars rover. Sundials were a passionate hobby of he and his mother. He carries three patents if I recall: ballet shoes, a novelty plastic bag magnifying "glass" project for children, a ball throwing gadget and an abacus. Sounds like a former engineer and current tinkerer. He may have the passion for theoretical science my pragmatic dad lacked, but apparently not the training or credentials. We all have our parts to play on this great stage of life.

James Danowski, tbh, it's a bit bad that someone would mistake him for another black actor. And he was mistaken for someone else only because they are both black. It wasn't an intentional diss at SLJ or black people, but it was the interviewer's unconscious carelessness and prejudice that caused his inability to distinguish two completely different people. All he saw was a build, an age and a skin colour and couldn't separate two people.

If you want to listen to someone who does know many factors involved in climate, look up Dr Willie Soon, lots of KZfaq videos. Bill Nye does have an engineering degree, but, doesn’t know jack about the world’s climate. His show used to teach kids you have either an XX (female) or XY (male) chromosome set. This part of that show has gone down the memory hole. Yes, there are a few unfortunate people that have odd variances, but they are few and far between. What happened to Bill Nye the Science Guy who made science fun for kids instead of trying to scare the crap out of them.

*@BioStuff415:* Yeah, I'm taxed to pay for wars I don't support, but I have to pay them anyway. The question was stupid and the statistic is meaningless. I know a lot of right-wing tools are now griping about the teachers union and so on, so they love this sort of comment. But it was irrelevant. Most teachers aren't lazy, just as most people in whatever profession _you_ are in aren't lazy. However, the right-wing media doesn't focus on _your_ particular profession, and question the integrity of the whole group based on the performance of a tiny minority. Matt Damon had a clever comeback, and it was a far better question because it shined light on the stupidity of the original question.

when at the Golden Globe awards, it is understood to professionals that the attention is for honouring the Golden Globes function, not another upcoming one. For instance, would one begin to ask the Nobel Peace Prize guests about the Golden Globes? Or ask the Cancer Benefits Gala visitor about an upcoming Parkinson's Benefit Gala ? Concentrating on the event one is attending is the courteous professional thing to do. If one gets free swag and photo opportunities, then the celebrity is doing the correct thing to direct the audience to the event under whose banner she is attending! Good for you Ms Lawrence

Re: Mayim Bialik segment (5:17)... Mayim in fact has a doctorate from UCLA (2007) in neuroscience. She IS a scientist so, it IS silly to ask her about her calculus skills. On the other hand, Bill Nye is NOT a scientist; however, I would expect he would know calculus as he has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell (1977). But, Bill Nye is no more a scientist than is Jimmy Carter. Like Bill, Jimmy graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering (US Naval Academy, 1946) and seven years later, he enrolled in (but never completed due to his father's death) a six-month non-credit course covering nuclear power plant operation at Union College in Schenectady. When the Three Mile Island nuclear accident occurred during his presidency (1979), the media grossly erred in crediting Carter with having "specialized in nuclear power" in the US Navy. He was photographed touring the facility. Famously, Carter never corrected that outrageous exaggeration of his knowledge. P.S. According to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH), radioactivity released during the Three Mile Island (TMI) accident does not appear to have caused an increase in cancer mortality among people living within a five-mile radius of the nuclear accident. (Report dated: Friday, April 28, 2000)

@@kathypease1711 That only really means you have a college level education in a scientific field, most people that are actually considered "Scientists" have YEARS of post-graduate studies, field-related work and published works in that field. Bill Nye DOES have some engineering experience working for Boeing, but most would consider his level of work and education to be that of a "Technician" and the fact that he left said field less than 10 years after graduation without applying for a higher degree would pretty much confirm that. The vast majority of his work is in the entertainment industry (some may call it "Edutainment"). Science proponent? Absolutely. Scientist? No. Educator? For sure.
