I don't think enough reviewers are highlighting how profound this game is in the way that it approaches mental health. As someone who has suffered depression most of their adult life I found this game to be incredibly cathartic in it's combination of frank conversation cutscenes and symbolism. Could not recommend this game enough. Best $30 (Australian) I've spent.

seanjoseph91 I've been turning to this game to deal with my anxiety when it gets too bad. So many reviews seem to see this game as a difficult platformer with a throwaway story, but to me the platforming is there to enhance the feeling of the story. I wish more games took this approach to create these powerful experiences.

I've been noticing how psychologists and artists of different art mediums have slowly been recognizing the potential for different art forms to be therapeutic for people dealing with different mental illnesses--music therapy, dance therapy, writing therapy, etc. and I've actually been looking for "game therapy" and heard about this game from a friend. I hope people catch on about it and become more serious/intentional in the way they make games.

Celeste is beautiful. And satisfying. As far as strictly 2D platforming is concerned, I would put it in the top 5. If you include 2D platforming with combat, Hollow Knight is the G.O.A.T. Whenever I play that game, I can't believe it exists.

two of the biggest selling points to me was the music, and the gameplay. I hate rage games but this game technically isnt one. games like getting over it have weird, unfair controls. This game though, has very simple controls. c=jump z=climb x=dash. Thats it. The way it plays with it makes the game so interesting. Yes this game is very, VERY, hard but, it isn't unfair. Every death seemed like my fault. but seriously if you want to pick up this game prepare to rage. I even had to take breaks just to prepare for the next section of the level, but finishing a level just feels so good. completing the game 100% was such a huge fucking accomplishment to me. buy this game. Also the music is amazing, i listen to the ost regularly. Death count for proof:10,286

I can't say it's the best game ever. But it's definitely one of the best platformers I have ever played. The dev masterfully created a difficulty curve where the game always challenges you, but when you go back to previous levels to find collectibles you're like "was this always this easy?"

This game was good and fine during the main story's play-through. It didn't really suck me in, but I liked it enough to want to complete it... The epilogue, however, hooked me like nothing ever has before. It had me by the feels AND by the pursuit of the thrill of overcoming a seemingly impossible screen. The epilogue is what makes this game completely essential.

Handal Piper The postcard in the game says they’re there to impress your friends, and it’s technically not wrong. The “your” it’s addressed to is supposedly Madeline (and not the player who can rename her), who impresses her friends with how many she collected throughout her climb. That being said, if you as the player didn’t collect very many you can always re-visit the prologue after collecting more and you’ll see the better endings anyhow.

Having played a lot of tough platformers (tough, not bs like I wanna be the guy) I'd say Celeste it's pretty unique not only on having a story (at least the pacing of it) but also on it's level design that thrust you right in in simple yet escalating progression, with 3 different final tests (last normal level, last b-side level and last c-side level -those unlock after beating all b-sides-) that take your skill as a player in new levels with all of what you've learned through the game and even teaching new advanced moves that require precision without ever feeling unfair.

I put about nine hours into the game and saw it through to the end. Quite frankly, I think it’s overrated to hell and back. Yes, the message about depression and anxiety is great but unless you fall into that one niche of gamers who like sadomasochistic platformers...it’s not fun to play. If I want difficulty, I’d much rather play castlevania, ninja gaiden, or ghouls n ghosts. Sure, they’re also hard and you die a lot, but at least it isn’t thousands of times and you’re not seeing the same exact screen over and over. Might just be me but playing something like this or meat boy, I start to get lazy after a while because it’s just that single screen that always operates in a predetermined way upon every reset. With any of the games I mentioned earlier (or even any normal platform game for that matter), enemies or obstacles might behave a little differently and it helps keep shit interesting even after dying in the same spot a handful of times.
@TheDuckClock
@TheDuckClock 6 жыл бұрын
You tried B-side yet? If you keep dying in the same spot in the standard path that's only your fault. It's the game's way of telling you that you're doing something wrong and you should think outside the box more.

That being said, I’m not disagreeing with you. Celeste for me is a 9.5/10 and Hollow Knight is a 10/10. There’s just so much more to do and so many more great things in Hollow Knight, but Celeste still does what it sets out to do as well any game I’ve seen.

I haven't played the game yet, and I'm totally going to do it soon, but Celeste to me isn't really or doesn't seem like the "Greatest game ever made". I've played many games, and this one looks good, i've played games like this, like Super Meat Boy, DownWell, etc. And it looks really fun, but doesn't seem like it's the one of the greatest. It's, again, really good looking and most likely plays like Super Meat Boy, but, it seems kinda generic, with the generic "Depression" theme. It mainly got popular because of it. It seems like most indie games is or has some sort of theme of depression, I don't mind it, I have a few depressed friends, but it seems generic to me. That's just my opinion though, it looks like an amazing game!
@thekingslayer1831
@thekingslayer1831 6 жыл бұрын
Chris What other games have that theme? I’m working on a game with a similar idea, and now I’m worried lol.
@godlyvex5543
@godlyvex5543 6 жыл бұрын
The claim is not that it's the greatest, the claim is that it's one of the greatest. And while the depression part is a major theme in the game, it's not the main gig. I came for the platforming, and stayed for it too. Most reviews also praise the game's platforming too. I've 106%ed super meat boy, so I know the game in and out, and I see the similarities, but celeste is far from meat boy. Celeste has few levels, but they're high quality. SMB has many short levels. Celeste has vastly different environments and gimmicks, while SMB's environments all seem the same, and lacks gimmicks. Celeste tells a good (even if it's generic) story. SMB is more gameplay based. Celeste's graphics and soundtracks are amazing, while meat boy's are pretty plain. And finally, while meat boy's platforming is well thought out with many great levels, it doesn't seem like someone thought about the fun-ness of the levels. I 106%ed it for bragging rights and self satisfaction, but I didn't have much fun doing it. Celeste on the other hand, has great platforming that I actually have fun doing. AND it's hard! To me, celeste is what I had hoped to see in meat boy. And I accidentially spent 30 minutes arguing that celeste is a good game, when you already agreed that it's good. *facepalm* And now my comment is a wall of text. *TLDR: I think celeste was far more well thought out than meat boy, and is generally better.*

All you do in this game is die and die and die to learn how not to die and reach the other end of the screen. Your reward? Another screen which could take another 50 deaths to master and on it goes. Just being chased by that crazy hotel manager. Dying and dying and dying. I've given this game some time because everyone goes on and on a out how this is the greatest game, a marvel an absolute bomb. While I appreciate that it might be a great game for reasons I simply can't understand, I'm completely bored with it and just pissed off really. No flow at all, nothing to enjoy there's simply nothing in this game just tedious jumping around and dying a lot, jumping back at the beggining. I can imagine this is the whole game about, but then this whole game is a just a big, very tedious chore. With the reward being more chores and grind. Maybe it just tells about my mental state, but this game just pisses me off. And the way people talk about it, pushes me to try to open my mind to it, but it just fucking pisses me off!!!

Almost every game can be categorized under "All you do is die until you learn how to not die, and then when you beat the level/area/section you get rewarded with more gameplay (where you die until you learn to not die)". Every game with a death system works like this lol.

Draelos wow what a thinker you are. Now try to think a bit harder and understand what I’m talking about. There’s other stuff to do in other games. There are rewards, side activities, etc. Not just a new level. This game is about nothing else but dying a lot. Though I changed my mind on this game since this post.

@@SimonO1919 Not really that I'm a thinker, just that you're not much of one :D Jokes aside, I sort understand what you mean. I disagree with it and think Celeste does a phenomenal job switching up it's gameplay with all the different ability objects found in different levels, but I can understand it. EDIT: Also it's not dying that's the focus, it's overcoming challenges and improving.
