Dashing through spikes was only the beginning.
This video takes a look at Celeste's "Demo Dash," which not only allows players to dash through spikes, but also enables variety of other tricks that make up a big part of the game's speedrun. For those saying the title is wrong, just know that demo dashes were entirely unintended by the devs. so technically it is a glitch, but it's more of an oversight. they obviously would never remove it as it only lets you go faster in a speed game. when they released farewell they added a room that requires demo dashes solidifying the demo dash as a feature. they are even adding a demo dash button for controllers in an upcoming update. So while it is a feature it is a feature now, when it was discovered it was a definitely bug.

@@thehiddenninja3428 yes, though it is more likely they did this so you can't skip a massive part of the chapter with assist mode.

In the latest beta builds you can just bind a key for demo dashes if you have cheat mode enabled.

8:55 really helped me out a lot. I didn't understand how people did these mid air hyper dashes. In fact, I just assumed they were supers and didn't understand why I couldn't get these strategies right.

Great video chai! Just to clear up one thing I heard, down-diagonal dashes only put madeline into a crouch state on the ground. In the air, madeline will not maintain crouch state because if she has a positive (which is downwards) vertical speed value, she will be forced to uncrouch. This is the case for any dash with a downwards component, and is also why madeline will uncrouch after reaching the peak of a crouched jump

Awesome video dude! Explained a lot of stuff I saw in speedruns that I assumed were normal dash techniques, especially the hyperdash with demo. Also makes me a bit sad it's incredibly difficult for me to replicate on Switch! At least until they release that button bind overhaul update 😆

Awesome video! Also may be useful to note that demodashes can make dreamhypers more lenient, and they allow you to hyper off of dream blocks (which you would enter with a normal down-diag dash)

17:24 I tried maybe hundreds of times, of those that went to this dash, a dozen successed to pass. I find it harder than demodashes throught spikes(doing it without demodash) Also, a trick for those like me, on console, who don't have a demodash button : If you do an horizontal one, you don't need to press the direction after pointing down If you release down soon enough(same window as if you point the next direction), the game will make you demodash forward, making it easier

I think demo dashing is cheating. Not because it is like skipping things or going through spikes but just because I imagine it'd be a controversial thing to say and get like screencapped having people be like "lol this guy thinks demo dashing is cheating" Also because its cheating

I love speedrunners. "Not humanly viable" and "TAS only" become challenges, rather than limitations. That are usually conquered at least once in a game's lifetime. And sometimes, the developers even help.

Love the video. My only gripe with it is you don't mention updemos! They're very limited in application, but they can allow for more consistent wallbounces in some spots, and more importantly, allow for the nutty strat in 1a used in the current wr, and the similar bonkers strat in 1c. Would love to see more videos like this in the future :)

@@void1359 so if you just go to the current city world record it's the strat that let's you get insane speed into the first room of the last segment, around 35 seconds into the run. hope that helps :)

Would it make sense for a runner to change their main dash button into a demo button and then bind another button thats just used for superdashes and extensions like at 13:23? I cant think of any other reason to dash normally instead of demoing.

I know what the normal demo button is but Idk what the diagonal demodash is. It seems like it has higher priority that the normal buttons but there's only 2 priorities for direction: arrows and custom with arrows being higher and arrows cant be mapped to another function.

while i agree with your point, i kinda wanna be pedantic so... demo dashes and ultras are really the main glitches exploited in speedrunning, and neither is really abused in farewell wavedashes, the mechanic abused in farewell, we're completely intended when the game was made and are definitely not a glitch and while that remember demo was prob put in there on purpose after the dev found out about demos, 3:58 is the much, much better example being literally called "the demodash room"

0:17 as a TASer the inaccurate spinner hitboxes bother me 🙃 17:06 down dashes are never crouched during the time that you're moving but only during the 4 frames that you're frozen in the air. (unless there's a ceiling above your head or you're in coyote time but thats not important RTA) 19:41 lol I like to do this too Archie is indeed a very good birb. Archiethon is coming up right?
