For sailors, celestial navigation is a step up from dead reckoning. This technique uses the stars, moon, sun, and horizon to calculate position. It is very useful on the open ocean, where there are no landmarks.
What are the 3 types of navigation?
There are three main types of navigation that we will discuss in this article:
Main Navigation.

How do you find the position of a ship by celestial navigation?
Celestial navigation by taking sights of the Sun and the horizon whilst on the surface of the Earth is commonly used, providing various methods of determining position, one of which is the popular and simple method called "noon sight navigation"-being a single observation of the exact altitude of the Sun and the exact ...
How does celestial navigation work?
The navigator measures the sun's altitude using a sextant at local noon, then subtracts the reading recorded on the sextant from 90 degrees, which is the total number of degrees in each hemisphere between the pole, 0 degrees, and the equator, 90 degrees. The number you end up with is called zenith distance, or ZD.

Finally the Truth has been spoken. 2nd Mate syllabus needs a serious reconstruction, Instead of focusing on theoretical & traditional concept, candidate should be trained and taught practical aspect of things which are practically used onboard.

I’m a navigator with a national coastguard, we carry a sextant onboard and use it pretty regularly to keep in practice. If you have a copy of SOLAS Marpol and ISGOTT, it’s pretty clear you make international trips, so depending on which parts of the world you visit you should have a sextant and you should know how to use it. GPS interference has caused incidents of vessels running aground due to over reliance on digital means of navigation. Don’t be that guy.

Got this video as KZfaq suggestion when I was watching and learning CelNav. Myself an amateur, have never been to sea, will never be a crew. Technology changes; so perhaps you are correct brothers. But I think CelNav can be a good hobby for anyone, even on land. Btw excellent video ❤

the reason to carry sextant onboard bcoz all Equipment have backup except GPS.. so if u can't obtained position via sextant you are not sailor anymore bcoz you are the only one on board who is backup for GPS .

Whenever in black sea all ships gps fails. There is no way to get our posns. Any suggestions other than celestial.

Requirement of sextant is mandatory but of all the vessels i have sailed only 1 or 2 ships had working sextant .Rest all of them were damaged😂 .No body even use those things

Yaar sayyed ye batao bhai ki namaz ka kya seen hai kaise pdhte ho? Zameen to chalti rhety hai aur ship left right bhi hoti kya namaz hoti bhi hai ki nahi? Rmzaan me roza kse kholte ho? Kaise azaan sunte ho? Juma ji nmaz to bina jamat ke hoti hai kaise pdhte ho tb? Taravi ka kya seen hai?

We know direction of mecca so we read in that direction , direction keep changing so your qibla , but another fact also when ur travelling you can read in any direction , baako apka sawaal nmaz hoti hai ya nai , aaj ye sab nmaz aur maa baap ki duao ki wajah se hi hai😍

Sir confident is good but over confidence is not good. Maana ke apka point valid hai ke maximum exams me Jo puchte hai wo use nai hota But wo basics hai wo to pata hona hi chahiye. Aur sextant to har jahaj pe hota hi hai ye requirement hai. Pls kindly do research before uploading such video. Don't just give any false information bcoz the young seafarers are watching this video they will get ur half knowledge.

You will use sextant on ecdis , when you dont have paper charts anymore what you will do of sextant , Iam not seeing sextant from past 4-5 ships , But yes old ships may be still carrying the same , ☺️
