A Celetion speaker cone shootout between the G12T-75, Greenback and Vintage 30. All of these are 12" cones. They are all being powered by the same Blackstar HT-20 Guitar combo with JJ tubes - modified by Stoner Guitar Mods. I will be playing a Japanese Fender Strat with Cobalt Noiseless pickups that you get in the American Fender Deluxe strats (about 10 years ago). All EQs are set to flat, no preamp on, no EQ on the desk.
I will be doing three comparisons. The first on clean with the guitar volume on 7, the second on Overdrive with the guitar volume set on 7 and the third on the bridge pickup of the guitar with the volume set to 10.
Just as a head up, my favourite before starting was the Vintage 30 but after the shootout I was less convinced. Put it this way, I'm glad I have three choices of cone.

Just stumbled upon your video by doing a search on Google, "g12t-75 vs 12gm greenback vs vintage 30" and your video came up. I have an Ampeg VT-22 that i am going to get back up and running after sitting for about 12 years and i was debating on which to go with. I had my eyes on the g12t-75 years ago and wanted to get an idea how the others compared since those were other options that would work fabulously as well, and your video was massively helpful. Although they all sound great it's still going to be the G12T-75 for me! Thanks a bunch!!!

Greenbacks are more full range dynamic of lows and highs - my preference. The G12T-75 start out close to the Greenbacks but have a slightly dampened midrange. The Vintage 30s are narrower and accentuate the mids. The type of cabinet wood, closed or open back. If you cannot decide I suggest a combination mixing of speaker types, 2x12 or 4x12.

I have my 1960 half stack slant double wired: one with the original thin wire to the original onput jack...and the same speakers wired with a double thickness wire running to a second input jack. It is like having two separate cabs...same GT-75 vibe but one has a bit more honk and the other a smoother high\low symbiosis. I have never run them at the same time...now I am wondering if I could, and if it alters the ohmage? hmmm

To be honest I can’t hear a difference between open and closed backs but I prefer open backs as I think it’s cool to see the speakers and makes measuring distances easier if you’re micing the rear of the cab. Also open back cabs are slightly lighter which is nice.

brilliant comment. Thanks for taking the time to listen properly. It's always a hard test as different speakers also respond differently at different volume levels. Because the greenback has the lowest wattage it will break-up the soonest, but that breaking up sound can sound amazing (as long as you're not pushing it too hard and actually destroying the cone).

Based on this video and using Sennheiser HD380Pro, I like the Vintage30, Greenback, then G12T-75. I like the highs in the G12-T75 but it overall sounds pretty weak to me. I'm thinking of getting a WGS Retro 30 as it's a Vintage 30 design with more highs and lows or as they describe better than me, "The 12" Retro 30™ speaker is a brighter and more articulate version of the WGS Veteran 30™ speaker. The Retro 30™ also boasts deeper and tighter bottom end".

The G12T-75s are really great all rounder speakers that get an undeserved bad rap IMO. Yes they can be bright but that can be tamed and they have a great bottom end. The Greenbacks always sound great. But I really prefer 75 watts speakers in my 4x12. I saw a G12H-75 Creamback vs 25W Greenback shootout earlier and the Greenback easily won that (really no contest). The Creamback sounded lifeless in comparison which the G12T-75s didn't here. Is there another higher wattage speaker that sounds closer to a Greenback than a Creamback? A mix of G12T-75s and that in a 4x12 would probably sound killer. I really never like the sound of V30s. Way too nasally for me but they do sound better with higher gain.
@jmcsquared18
@jmcsquared18 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. The G12's are clear and bright, but that isn't a bad thing. It means you can go easy on the treble and dial in plenty of resonance without the speakers just giving up and flubbing out on you, especially on those lower gain setting where you want to add some growl to the cleans while still keeping the lows tight.

I recently picked up a 1960a with G12T-75s in, going to give that a bit more time. I like them better than I thought I would, but my ears are *so* used to dialing in GB's and V30s for almost 3 decades and getting to the sound I want out of the amp and what I know will sound good mic'd... I will probably load the cab with 2 x GB and 2 x V30. It's a hard call, all 3 are great speakers. I think all 3 are good in any context. That being said, I think I am going to stick with what I am familiar with. Thanks for this vid, it was perfect for me right now, a nice confirmation for what I was hearing from my own rig. :D

I love G12T-75s. I honestly think of Vintage 30s as a great "Layer" tone. You start with Greenbacks of some kind, G12-65's, or G12T-75's, then you add in a 2nd guitar tone with V30s to blend to taste in a mix with a little 7kHz dipped out to kill a tad of the "Ice-Pick" in both cabs (but that goes double for the V30s). Cut a little 250Hz in both, and add in a little 4kHz and 8kHz on both (just a touch). Then blend both cabs to taste. Honestly the best cab I ever owned had G12T-75's. I simply don't get the "hate" the modern metal scene has for them. They were always a great speaker that had great breakup.
@PherotoneStudios
@PherotoneStudios 4 жыл бұрын
Well I can tell you that “G12T-75” is by far the most popular search term over Greenback and Vintage 30 on my channel so this hatred is silly. It’s like the hatred for the Metalzone pedal. I’ve owned that pedal. Sounds great. Currently I’m only micing up the Greenback. Purely because I couldn’t remember which way round the speakers were in the cab so just put the mic on the left one. Forgot I’d put them alphabetically and it’s also an open back cab so I’m really lazy. Great idea with the blend. Great comment all round. Thanks mate

@@PherotoneStudios ~ You're totally welcome (I've been engineering professionally for 20 years about, so I tend to speak in terms of how frequencies should interact without realizing it). =P I feel you on the Metalzone, and on a whole host of of the old BOSS distortion pedals. I recently bought an OD200 for my new pedal board I'm pulling together because it had a "Metalzone" setting, a Blues Driver, and an OD1 Setting, as well as a "SD1" setting (labled Tubescreamer, but we all know the Tubescreamer was just an SD1 clone). I think it also does the DS1/DS2 thing, but I'd have to dig into the drive list on the manual, and do direct comparisons to some of my old recordings. Sometimes those old simple pedals were just "the sound" that worked. So it's been really nice to have one pedal that covers most of that ground that you can also program via MIDI.
@PherotoneStudios
@PherotoneStudios 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve only just seen this reply, sorry. I couldn’t agree more. How are you finding the OD200?
@TheCarymiller
@TheCarymiller 4 жыл бұрын
@@PherotoneStudios ~ Hey man! No worries. I am loving the OD-200, but I have a kind of a ridiculous setup. I'm using a pedalboard that has a Friedman bufferbay (a 6 Input/output patch bay essentially), a small Hotone Cybery MIDI controlled pedal switcher, and two Eventide H9s. All of this goes out of the bay into inserts 1, 3, and 4 (3 and 4 are in stereo for the H9s isolated) on my Line 6 Helix, and then my Kemper goes into insert 2. As elaborate as it all sounds, now I can simply control/recall distortion settings for the OD-200 on Insert 1 with my Helix (which is super fast now that it's all programmed), and every distortion setting can get it's own custom NS2 noise gate setting as needed internal to the OD-200. As the OD-200 can also be switched on and off via MIDI, it's in front of the Cybery, but still controlled by it without having to take up a loop on the board (which has a Klon clone that is really close to a real Centaur I owned for 16 years, a Cali 76 compressor, a Katzenkonig by Caitlinbread, and a DM2 Waza to give me things I'm just used to having on a live rig around. So...basically I have all my real amps profiled meticulously like I'd record them in studio in my Kemper, I've got a few pedals I'd run in front of my real amps which I can control via MIDI, and then I've my H9, AND the Line 6 FX on top of some Kemper FX if I want to make really powerful wet/dry or wet/dry/wet stereo signal chains. Committing to this change was hard on me at first, because I ran a public recording studio for over a decade, but I'm just making more money in production and post, so I wanted a rig that captured most of my great old amps before I flipped the majority them. I do however, honestly prefer the OD-200 to say the Line 6 emulations of some of those distortion pedals, but sometimes chaining an emulation before it can be awesome for gain-staging (say you use a Line6 OD1 and boost 1dB going into the OD-200 OD1 setting boosting yet another dB, this sounds cleaner than boosting at any one stage and can be really handy). Also I prefer the OD-200 to pretty much all my old Boss pedals (most of which have been ebayed as a result, so it's already paid for itself). It sounds virtually the same to every pedal it mimics (to the point where cork sniffing was really a waste of time for everything but the Klon Centaur and Big Muff style settings, and even those are pretty darn close in most respects). I know some people are worried because it has an AD converter...but digital recall for 198 settings with the new firmware AND the built in noise gate, parallel processing, and stacking options means it just takes up no space while being a lot more musical/flexible than owning a closet of old pedals instead. I run a Pro Tools Ultimate rig with a Prism Sound Titan currently, and DI recordings with this setup has been super clean, and easy to recall. I can't say enough good things. I've been thinking about starting a youtube channel just to document this workflow. I hope you're doing well and are safe man, I love your channel. Sorry for writing a novel. The OD-200 is really worth it if you want to sink the time into something you can control via MIDI for sure. If you're more into tweaking analog pedals its not the most intuitive thing...but I just need recall to be perfect every time for mixing/mastering or I'm losing time I can't afford.

@@PherotoneStudios 🤷‍♂️ Have the other two been around longer? May be a matter of sticking to what you know. But now I know when I get a 4x12 it doesn't really matter which one of these speakers are in it, they all sound great.

Maybe you’re right. It could be due to it being a newer speaker. I totally agree, every speaker cabinet sounds good

The 75s sounded harsh and the greenbacks sounded best.

The vintage 30 is the best sounding to my ears here at home with several tube amps I Have tried v30 vs Eminence Red Coat Wizard and Celestion creamback G12 M ! The Wizard is not for tone its for distortion that had no real harmonics as the Celestions had great tone but the EQ was different as the Vintage 30 fits the guitar range near perfectly and the highs remained under control ! The G12M was relaxed in the mids a bit too much unless your a rythem player then its great slapping chords out as it amazes me at its ability to chop too ! Nice big bottom on the G12m , more that the V30 !

Great comment. It’s nice reading something where someone has really listened. Im doing a similar review using a guitar with humbuckers soon just to see how that stacks up. The Vintage 30 was my favorite

Great reply , I left humbuckers and used p90 HB sized pickups but when I bought a Epiphone traditional LP I stay with the HB as there good and warm , less gain in HB pups is a better tone when cranked up ! HB have a more wide range of abilities and they own Classic rock , blues are awesome with a glass slide too as the sustain is fantastic if you can hit those golden notes ! I tune my tube amps using vintage and new 12ax7 tubes , the Tungsram 12ax7 tube is one of the best tones you can get pushed abit ! Never a bad note on those tubes ! Its all about getting your vibe that your ears like , trust your ears as I noticed others cannot tell the difference switching 12ax7 tubes ? Some folks have no ear for tone I guess , or they are not really listening ? It took many hours to re-tube the 5 - 12ax7 tubes in a Jet City 2212 combo but when I switched the speaker to a vintage 30 it was amazing and no more tweaks was needed ! I did not imagine how good that vintage 30 speaker was until I heard it myself wow !

Greenback hollows out the mids yet still delivers bluesy disguishable notes...lighter and not as punchy as other 2 but breaks up nicely. V30 Nice overall sound. Gives tones similar to greenback but a little tougher Gt75 just kicks ass all around. I want to put 1 v30 and 1 gt75 in a 2x12

Honestly, none of them sounded good, which leads me to think it's the amp you're using. They all sounded the same.

Sorry about that. Avoid the Blackstar HT-20 in that case. Since this video I’ve moved to a Boss Katana and Orange Rocker 15 Terror. Planning on doing another comparison on those

Sorry, but telling him, they do sound the same, is not fair at all. If you have a good sense of hearing, you here a slightly difference. Maybe try to use good headphones :)

KZfaq also compresses audio etc. So any difference we hear here, would be huge in real life.

No doubt about it, the G12T wins hands down. Greenbacks are tolerable, but the Vintage 30 sucks. The sound is totally mud!
