@@eugenux Yep the Zupra and BRZ clone are on their way out. In truth I think they are just going to make one RWD sports car chassis and just pull a Nissan FM chassis strategy and just reinforce / stretch and shrink it as required for the next few decades. It worked just fine for the Z/G series of sports cars up till now, and this way they won't get pegged for just being a factory sticker swapping tuning company.

Mazda is able to sell their MX-5 for under $30k, and the MR2 has always been a competitor to the MX-5. Seems like Toyota is being a bit greedy with their pricing because they know people will buy it still, which is a shame. If it started at $40k, I might be interested but at twice the cost of the Miata, I'm sticking with the Mazda.

Zero chance it will MSRP at $65k. It wouldn't sell at that price, except to rabid MR2 fans. They'll start it at $50-55k, dealers will jack it to 70+ until all the rabid MR2 fans are satiated, and after a small run it will go away. Cayman owners will be watching all this in disbelief.

@@faheemabbas3965pretty sure it mainly has to do with the crappy regulation BS with all this sensors, safety stuff and digital things that they are forced to throw onto a car because people can't seem to not rely on them to be a good and safe driver. Also you have to keep in mind that dealerships are the true douchebags of the car industry as they're the ones that screw you over with pricing. You also have to blame consumers for willing to pay more than they could afford and willing to pay for the markups.

I don’t think that price of 65k for the MR2 can be right at all because that goes deep into supra pricing territory, which makes no sense since I don’t think Toyota would want two cars that have similar buyers to be competing in the same price range just for reference you can get a 45th anniversary edition Supra with a base MSRP of $64,375 currently

Well it would be mid-engined. Perhaps they are dropping the Supra since that is a joint venture with BMW manufactured by a 3rd party (Magna). So maybe the MR2 becomes the new premium sports car, and the Celica the new mainstream sports car (perhaps replacing the twins).

By the time the MR2 comes out the current Supra would have already been discontinued and on its way to becoming hybridized or electrified and most likely getting more expensive.. 80K range? If correct this MR2 will be non hybrid or electric. If Toyota uses its own 3cyl turbo from the GR Yaris/Corolla it could considerably cut the cost down. But like I said in my own post.. Toyota will have to partner up with a car company like Lotus to help them develop a mid engine chassis. Toyota gets a new MR2 and Lotus gets a new ELISE.

MR2 at 65+ base is NUTS. I think 40-45 base for a turbo 4 would be KILLER . 50K or so for hybrid. Have upgraded versions for more. 65 for a AWD EV version would be very intersting. They could share platform with Lexus and maybe other companies(why not BMW? but theyll make it ugly AF)

40 - 45k for even a turbo 3 base would be nice (with Yamaha head, intake and exhaust), then have a AWD performance hybrid for about 10k more, and of course have a 6spd stick shift for all the trims! The markups will be nuts though, and will kill the sales numbers like most sports cars these days. I don't think Toyota has a Lexus chassis they can use for a Celica or MR2 profitably (reason they didn't use a Lexus chassis for the Zupra and just slapped some stickers, body kit and some stiff shocks on a BMW, LC500 is the real MK.V Supra, just didn't make financial sense to brand it as such), I think they will be heavily modified corolla chassis if they do them. Though there was talk about them using a Daihatsu chassis for the next MR2, time will tell.

It should be able to respect its predecessors without resorting to superficial gimmicks--especially if it must compete in a higher price range. The current Prius is an example of a Toyota with refined details. Honda's S2000 and Mazda's earlier Miatas are examples of integrated design in small 2 passenger cars. At the very least Toyota would do better than these drawings by enlarging the Autozam AZ-1--including oversized headlights.

I had an 85 and 89 Supra, a 86 and 91 MR 2. Wanted the next gen Supra but Toyota started to price out the core buyers with the MSRP and the mark up. I see the same thing happening again if 65 k is MSRP for the MR 2, what's the d/m going to be?

If Toyota brings this back, the GR86 is history. And if it happens, I guarantee all the YT and magazine auto journalists, who have given so much praise about the GR86 being “perfect” and “not needing more power”, will immediately start saying “the GR86 lacks in this and this in comparison to the MR2 and Celica…” LOL I GUARANTEE this will happen. Point is, it’s shows how much you can “trust” an auto journalists opinion on things, because a lot of their opinion is biased in what is “cool and current today.”

It’d be cool if the Celica returned to rwd. I have an 84 gts and that thing is a blast. I’d imagine that it would be awd, which is still cool. And hopefully if so it will be standard and not fwd.

Hopefully, they give it some good bones. Double wishbone / multilink / dual pivot suspension please. If they do give it the standard MacPhersons suspension, at least give it some rear wheel steering, so they can tune out the downfalls. Mid-engine with dynamic rear steering 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Id prefer as minimal mechanical complications as possible, not only would it increase cost, it would increase the complexity. inherently reducing the reliability of the MR2 platform.

I hear what you're saying, and I understand the sentiment, but the technology is already proven, and we're talking about Toyota parts here. Moreover, within the spirit of your argument is saying: you wouldn't want a more powerful power train, because it would add more cost and complexity -- because more power would entail a variable drivetrain, turbos or high compression interference cylinders, combination direct and port injection... I'm not saying you're saying that, I'm saying that's along the same lines of logic. I think, we both want the same things from a new platform: Performance, entertainment and reasonable cost. If it's going to be a mid engine platform, it's going to emphasize performance over entertainment -- at least more so than the current GR86 -- otherwise just get an 86, it's got plenty of entertainment. Whatever the case, I hope their NVH team doesn't get overzealous and over isolate the things that matter: steering, pedal, shifter and seat feel

@@10K2HVN I can definitely see where your coming from and I do appreciate your reasoning. I'm by far not against these features being added just a concern for driven up cost (coming from a younger car owner that's all.) I too hope that it comes to fruition, now is a very good time to produce a mid engine N/A sports car, especially with the C8 corvette doing so well, and due to how the powers at be want everyone to transition over from ICE to EV.

I owned a series 1 MR2. Oh what fun! I would love to see a new one. But I want a hybrid sports car. If four wheel drive, an electric motor at each corner otherwise rear wheel drive. In some ways it’s sad to loose the sound of IC engines. The whine of electric motors remind me of Scalelectric slot cars. That has to be maddening on a long trip.

The Celica already did kinda come back already... The Scion tC. Problem was everyone slept on it. BUT the reason everyone slept on it was Toyota didn't bother bringing it with them when they killed Scion where they could of given it a real chance with any sort of actual sport trims or optional beefier engine, a turbo, or AWD. The tC is a great platform with a bulletproof drivetrain and would of been an entusiast dream if they maybe tried harder.

I 100 % disagree. My friend owned a Scion TC for a decade and still own my 04 GTS 6 speed. The car design of the TC looks more like a economy sports sedan and handles nothing like a Celica. It has a 2.4 liter Camry engine the TC. Let’s stop with the TC comparisons cause I find it super insulting. The car looks like crap too compared to the Celica

The gen 3 MR2 Spyder is my dream car but it's so hard to find. I hope they bring back the MR2 even if it's a hybrid as long as it has a mid engine like it's supposed to be I'll be happy. I'd love an AWD gas only MR2 whether it's a convertible, solid top, or removable t top. I'd go in debt just to buy a new Toyota MR2 or gen 3 MR2 Spyder if I could find one

AWD being rear wheel bias or that has a small electric something that powers the front wheels during launch and/or when slippage is detected!
Toyota's NEW engine will power the REVIVED Celica and MR-2...
