The part that always makes me teary-eyed here is the part where Celie and Nettie hug one another - it's just the look of disbelief on Celie's face, the way she can't bring herself to hug her sister at first and the way she whispers "Hi Nettie", it's almost as if Celie's scared that she's dreaming and if she moves or speaks her sister will disappear again. But you can also tell that deep down a part of her believed she'd never see Nettie again, and she's so overcome with shock and happiness at having her back again; Whoopi's acting in this single scene was sheer brilliance and very moving.

I love how at the start, instead of it just being Celie, Shug and Albert (Mister) on the porch when Nettie and her group arrives (like in the book), it's instead everyone: Mary Agnes, Harpo, Sophia, Grady as well as Shug, Celie and Albert (way in the distance in the field); everyone who caused Celie to grow and evolve into the woman she is, is standing there with her when she's finally reunited with her sister and her children, it's absolutely lovely.

This scene makes me think of when I see my late husband Tim in Heaven, just the shear look of joy in his face, and *then* finally seeing my Jesus, Who has carried me through so much heartache and pain *and* has brought me so much joy!

how sad it is that after all those years gone by, she finally meets her children, and can't even communicate with them for their words and language comes from so far away. it's bittersweet; tears of joy and peace yet tears of sadness

There are some movies that really touch the spirit of human survival, love and perserverance. This movie is true magic for it's ability to grip your soul and peel you like an onion, layer by layer. I truly believe that anyone who doesn't come away from this movie without a tears in their eyes bears no soul. Some of the scenes in the feature are even haunting. I even love listening to the movie sountrack they made for it to this day. This movie is a "must have " in any dvd collection. I THINK IT PISSES GOD OFF WHEN YOU WALK BY THE COLOR PURPLE IN A FIELD, AND DON'T NOTICE IT. Thank you Alice Walker, Berry Gordy and Steven Speilberg for a treasure on earth to be seen and heard by generations.

Whoopi Goldberg is nothing short of fantastic as an actress here. I loved her in "Ghost" where she did finally win an Oscar (Best Supporting Actress), but this movie's performance is legions higher than "Ghost!" She and the rest of this movie was flat-out robbed at the Oscars.
@nyrockchicxx8 жыл бұрын
Do you know why?! Because there were protests all along about making this movie. The NAACP was the most vocal about the way black people were being portrayed, in particular the black man, mostly in the form of Mister. Personally I think Danny Glover was fantastic in the role. The flip side was Harpo. There was the treatment of Sophia, espec. with Miss Mellie. Then there was the questionable relationship betw. Shug & Celie. With all the noise & protest the Academy chose to overlook it. Very sad because Steven Spielberg brought to life a story presented by an exceptional cast. Alice Walker knew exactly what she was writing about. The book is great too.
@ericday45058 жыл бұрын
I agree this movie was robbed, I can remember thinking, wow, when Oprah didn't win early in the Academy awards presentations, but all night long it was like are you kidding me, I have commented some where else that I am not the biggest fan of Walker and her portrayal of black men, I too thought really, every black man is either abusive or chasing after what seemed like little girls, I thought it was over played. I do understand that was her experience, but man that film did a lot of HARM to the image of black men.
@tristezzalamentoluciano2658 жыл бұрын
+Eric Day notice how he was redeemed when he paid for Nettie and Celies children to come. or at least that's how I always saw that part where he gets that letter and then they show up. Maybe Im wrong. but I love this movie and this book is beautiful. Ive read it 5 times at least. the soundtrack to this movie is amazing. especially the tribal/ritual music. that part with the scarification ritual- beautiful, moving music.
@ericday45058 жыл бұрын
Yes he was redeemed you are, quite right, but my issue has been with the author of the book, as I have said I thought she did a disservice to black men, my thought was that every dominant black male in the picture was either abusive or sexually immoral. Save the man that took the little ones to Africa. And yes that is nice that he could see the errors of his ways and pull off that nice gesture. The closing scene when the two ladies are playing the game that they played as young girls, Spielberg did that scene brilliantly with Albert going by in the background with his horse, so often that scene is cut short and you miss that part but still a great movie. I did not and will not read the book.

Definitely a tear jerker.....especially when Celie is running towards Nettie but stops just short of reaching her; like she's afraid she's imagining this wonderful moment and if she touches Nettie she may dissolve into thin air. Celie has been wronged so much in her life that this feeling of absolute joy is actually FOREIGN to her. This film and all of the nominated actors were seriously robbed of their rightful accolades during award season......

Watching a scene like this inspires me. Some people still believe film/television is lowbrow art, but we are witnessing artists. They inspire us, they make us question our lives, they make difficult decisions when we cannot, they make us believe we can be stronger, they can connect with us in a way that no one else can. Actors and filmmakers are our Rembrandts and Da Vincis. They are our Hemingways.

Not even to stand on that prodigious apogee of Everest herself, or to see the Sistine Chapel for the first time with my own naive eyes will offer the same power as this remarkable film. I could be alone surrounded by the distant echoes of birdsong with the pleasant smell in which the past evenings dew has mustered up within the grassy flora at my feet whilst awaiting the sunrise of a brand new day and it may just pale in comparison to this life affirming film. Let it be said that all of the above are miracles of nature but The Color Purple IS in itself a natural miracle. Beautiful, beautiful film with a stellar cast and the absolute truth of humanity which runs throughout it in all of its complex facets. Chris (UK).
