This may sound weird, but I understood almost every single word you said! Not because I'm an electronic musician, but because I'm a telecommunications engineer (soon to graduate); signal modulations are my fetish :D That said, I can't imagine any normal person getting into it; and not only just liking it, but expertly practicing it! Mastering signal transportation and modulation on this level without going to college just further goes to show the genius that is Celldweller. Keep it up!

Awesome info, thanks. You directed me to Expert Sleepers. Which in turn led me to Muffwiggler, which led me to modulargrid. So am in the planning stage for a modular system. :-) 95% of the people on muffwiggler see the modular world as a means per sé. I want to integrate it with my Cubase. I want it to work in a musical way. Integrate it in song structures. So, this is a real eye opener! Been a fan since Circle of Dust. (Disengage is one of my favorite albums of all times btw). Really great to see how you evolved during the years, with great success artistically as well as commercially. Thank you for the time you take to "teach" some of your insights and knowledge to us!

THIS MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE NOW. knowing what you've sent the original (computer audio) into the ES-3 and then the "mult"s connects so many missing links for me (lame pun intended). i'm a sound tech and i've never looked into mods before, but they're very similar to other things i've used.

You mention the Metropolis a lot (my first piece of modular); just wondering if you could do a production zoning in on your favourite modules such as the Metropolis, and different ways to get the most results out of them. For instance I'm trying to explore ways to modulate the different sequencing parameters to get more interesting sequences using the Metropolis. I'm finding these videos really useful, thanks.

How do you keep track of all the settings with hardware mod synths? A camera and zoom? Or do you just capture audio and the magic of the moment? With software modular synths you just save vst files. Sometimes the tiniest nudge of a knob will change a sound or make it lose its edge. Thanks for the production series. It is very insightful.

hi there, I have a question. On my modular system I have the doepfer A190-3 which receives midi info from Ableton. Ive noticed a small delay between my daw and the modular but not in terms of tempo synch. They synch perfectly but it feels like the modular starts from the second pulse and not from the first. Any thoughts on that? Thanks (I use scarlet 18i20 with latency compensation)

Hm, Klayton, I just tried to record the (tuned) pitch CV using ES-6 and playing back with ES-3. But the signal always gets out of tune... actually even a bit different for every of ES-6s inputs. Did you have this, too? What did you do to fix it? Thanks, man!

So I guess we wouldn't need to use a DC coupled interface (like the MOTU's) if we use the ES with spdif or adat? That is great news if that is the case. Nice use of extra i/o as well. Most people aren't using those on their interface. Also about these modules being expensive, they are, but if you love synthesis as a hobby, you would probably love the modular world. Thank you for this. And appologize for some harsh things said on the FM interview, we were out of line and are huge fans.

Hi. Klayton, did you ever try modulate real instruments (electric guitar, for example) via your modular world? I saw your Hertz Donut video and this question was born in my mind. Is it possible in some way? Very interesting what results could get.

I am sure he has. It is something I have done before :) I put a pulsar modular synth with the control voltage outputs going into the cv inputs of the volume on a line 6 guitar amp. I have the resulting sound in a song I made that I have on soundcloud if you'd like to check it out :) It's pretty fricken cool sounding. soundcloud.com/gatchimakesmusic/arrival

veery interesting, in my (poor guy) experience integrating euro into "regular" daw with live is very straigthforward, just MIDI to cv and some mults. and some free live devices from stretta for clock. i was worried in the beginning too tho. in the end euro clocks better than most regular synths, much tighter. edit: recording automations is a different story tho. edit 2: u dont need a dc coupled interface for clock, you need one with more than a L+R out. edit 3: (ehehehe) hell of a channel, SUBSCRIBED. :) edit 4 (really?) obviously you won't get Klayton dream set-up in any way :)

Cool stuff. He keeps on reffering to the data tranferred from the sequencer to Cubase as audio, when it's clearly cv controller data. A slight annoyance for me. A good idea when doing this sort of thing would probably be to use a note quantiser for the edits on the output from Cubase, since some of the "time Stretched" edits sounded kind of out of key.Overall some good ideas here. Cv to midi notes and vice versa, would be the optimum in terms of flexibility though.

I can see that Klayton is organized. q base and other words are basically names of parts, software, and systems altering the signal; altering the sound-wave. q base is the software emulated by Klaytons PC. it sends a rhythmic beat to all the systems ensuring that the timing is correct without altering the modified pitch. 7:45 turning that knob altered tempo [timing] and beat to that one part its all adding sound or (+) to the output vs filters or (-) removing or clipping a the sound. notice as you listen, hes altering one sound either altogether, or individually. 12:10 that pad hes touching is actually holding the clock at a certain point of time, allowing to easily emulate a repeated tone automatically without him having to turn that other knob himself. 18:10 is the computer emulating the signal beat the PC is outputting out to the equipment. [try imaginating this sound sounding very electric guitar like. 19:21 that's what the modular world is basically doing., by either adding echo, tone, different intone beats, distortions, and filters.] heres the same sound on modular world. 21:54

there are tons of ways to send clock to your modular rig from daw. I think this guy just likes to show off his pricy gear. Seriously just place a square wave sample on the beat in any track of your project in your daw and take the audio output to your modular synth. it only costs the price of a wire. cable.
@froidboy
@froidboy 9 жыл бұрын
Is it just me or does this seem really complicated and unnecessary ,couldn't you use virtual versions of these things that come integrated into DAW's instead of having all these rigs with cables everywhere' i'm kinda new to it all so seeing all his equipment is really overwhelming aha.

costa Ricardo It's like sampled drums vs real drums. Software synths are good, but they don't give you the control, flexibility and sound of an analog modular like this, similar to how even the best drum plugins can't replicate the sound and nuances of a real drummer playing real drums.
