Once upon a time I was a teenager who wanted an electric cello, but couldn't afford any instrument) So I played a borrowed fretless bass with a bow, and it worked. I could use only either lowest or highest strings due to the lack of curve in the fingerboard, but it was fun.

@TheVoitel 3 жыл бұрын
@@st_orlie No. I said something very different. You said that bowed strings have to be flat wound, while I said that they do not and that they have not historically been flat wound. The difference is just that guitar strings (especially for electric instruments) do not have a very careful finish, thus they are very rough. Take a roundwound cello string for example, and you’ll that it is much smoother that a guitar string.
@st_orlie
@st_orlie 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheVoitel I said they have to be flat wound otherwise the strings would tear up the bow, which again is exactly what you are saying. I never said you can't do it, I'm just saying it's bad for the bow. Also, gut strings are not a direct comparison to modern guitar strings because guts are much gentler than metal so they aren't nearly as rough on bows even though they aren't flat wound. So no, you added a pointless bit of history that I already knew (in an incorrect context), but other than that you just said the exact same thing as me in a slightly different way.

Kudos Magpie! This experiment turned out WAY better than I would have hoped. Perhaps cellists could play electric bass easily if they were to tune the strings in fifths as cellos are normally tuned. Fourths are for basses and guitars, fifths are for cellos, violas, violins, and mandolins. Anyway, I like the sounds you're getting out of these cello strings. Nice jamming in the last part of this video. Very enjoyable.

@@joshstarkey8883 Roundwounds will chew up the fretboard on a fretless. Less so on a fretboard made of a hard wood like Ebony. Flatwounds are almost required on a fretless instrument if it's acoustic, and/or if you do a lot of sliding. You're right though, it's not really required. Have you ever tried flat-wound strings?

@joshstarkey8883
@joshstarkey8883 4 жыл бұрын
@@alecrisser12 I like the sound of the roundwounds and I play them enough my fingers aren't bothered by sliding on them. My right hand technique and the styles I play tend toward the aggressive side, but if I play less hammering the strings with my fingernails and more plucking with the fleshy side of the finger like double bass, I can mellow out whatever strings I'm playing when it's called for. The fretboard scratches are right under the strings, so even cosmetically it doesn't really bother me. Years down the road if they get deep enough to affect playability I'll (carefully and with the proper tools) sand it down a tiny bit. It probably helps I'm always trying to use my left hand as lightly as possible to fend off fatigue. My fingerboard is rosewood, I think something harder would be more ideal but I love the neck on this instrument. 5 strings with nice narrow necks are worth their weight in gold to me. Tim Sway here on KZfaq made an acrylic bass with an aluminum fingerboard and I love how bright it can get, while still retaining the ability to sound like your classic fretless. It'll be on his channel Tim Sway or New Perspectives Music if you're interested. If I'm ever building or buying custom instruments I'd love something like that. I have played flatwounds, I have a (fretted) 5 string with Ernie Ball Cobalt flats I usually break out for funk, hip hop, classic rock.

I once broke a new guitar string above the nut. It was too short to make it to the tuner, so I tied with part of the old string with a square knot. I used it like that until those strings got old and needed changing. Just thinking that would be something that could have been done with the short string. Of course cello strings are a lot thicker than guitar strings.

first off, 8:15 or so sounds kinda like that "Music Makes You Lose Control" song...but secondly, its an odd tone you get, out of cello strings on a bass...it almost sounds like a baritone acoustic guitar or something...like, the strings timbre makes em sound "higher-pitched" than bass strings, but the nature of a bass (and a cello for that matter) is to be "lower-pitched" than, say, a guitar or violin, so you end up somewhere in the middle, playing a 'bassline' on a guitar, or strumming 'guitar chords' on a bass...
