Cello Thumb Position Tips | Basic Finger & Hand Shape!

Here I talk about the common thumb position hand & finger shape, how to avoid tension, and demonstrate some finger tapping exercises! Even if you are not actively playing in thumb position, you can still practice proper form. Due to this, you do NOT need your bow for these tips because I talk about what we can observe with just our eyes.

The multiple camera angles is such a good addition. There are so many videos where you just don't get a good view of whats going on mechanically!

This was so so helpful and the wrist divot has been my problem for months. My teacher never mentioned it and I was never able to get weight to my thumb. This fixed it! Thanks so much!

As a fellow cellist, I personally do not keep the left wrist should be a straight line to get weight. I think that the thumb should be perpendicular to the string and the thumb knuckle should be in contact with the string in general to prevent injury to the nail. In addition, the solidity of the bone removes, in my opinion, the need to get weight. Great video and thank you for posting.

As always, a great video! A potentially interesting discussion might be about the various thumb positions for scales and chords. For example, I have explored placing my thumb a whole step below the tonic of a minor scale. So, when playing an E minor phrase, I place the thumb on D, thus avoiding the tight half step of B and C on the A string. Is this strange or familiar?! “Inquiring minds want to know!”😂

Still no clue how would you vibrate such a C shaped 1st finger. I can only vibrate with it collapsed using a fleshy part

Yes I am wondering too how does that work with vibrato and the first finger?! My finger collapses too… 🤔

I have a very strong vibrato, but only with the fingers collapsed, and I like it that way. I can't get my fingers to stay on the string with them pointed down like that. I liked the video though, probably because she's so darn cute.

I’m a college student and I’m having some LH pain with Thumb position. I’m currently working on the 3rd movement of Haydn in C and the Bb to D is causing pain in my palm. Do you have any advice for that open stretch?

This works on a 5 String Cello if you want some epic Violin like sounds.

Yes, that would definitely get you into the violin register, but for now I'll be sticking with my good ol' thumb position! Hope you enjoy your 5-string when it arrives! 👌🏻

@@CelloDoll Those 5 String Cellos are a waiting along with something else, Covid19 Vaccines cause they're still in development, & the 1'st day of School was changed to August 20 2020 due to this Pandemic. Here's what a 5 String Cello looks & sounds like in a piece:kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gcx-i658ytanpJc.html & this is Beiliang Zhu playing Bach's D Minor Violin partita (BWV 1004) on the 5 String Cello. One of the things about playing a 5 String Cello that really should be utilized more often would be using it as an alternative to the Violin cause anything written for the Violin can be easily played on the 5 String Cello down an Octave. Haven't you seen this too?:kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ja2qf69mxOCdl5c.html some Cellist restrung his Cello GDAE like a Violin for this particular piece.

I bought a 5-string violin (with added low C string) and was disappointed at how very difficult it was to stay on the string I wanted. I think the idea of a 5-string cello would present the same problem, but I would love to try it.

@@notmyworld44 Actually they've fixed that problem by improving the curvature of the bridge.

You are not going to believe this; another cellist KZfaqr said that keeping your wrist straight in thumb position is wrong!😮 I kid you not. When I heard that I thought this guy is a complete dummy!
