In this episode, Jordan shows you how to miter a Cement tile over a shower curb. If you are thinking about doing this as a DIY project, maybe think again. Cement tile is much more difficult to work with and seal than porcelain or ceramic tile, but looks great when installed correctly. It can also look pretty bad if you get the details wrong.
More on cement tile installs coming in future videos!

You're a master of installation and technique for this retro tile. I differ strongly with your enthusiasm and comment that this tile is durable and long-lasting product. It died because it was not an enduring tile. Unless this product is fired and glazed it will not be durable against acid chemicals common to cleaning tiles. it is also significantly soft and easily scratched as opposed to ceramic or porcelain. The porous nature of cement tile means it easily transfers moisture and chemicals including oils or dyes. This kind of tile really needs to be immersion sealed with a high-quality penetrating solvent sealer and then allowed to cure and dry for days before installing or moisture migration can really end up pushing grout pigment and even your setting material that can potentially precipitate material into the tiles creating picture framing that may not dry out uniformly. The quality of different manufacturer's tile can have very inconsistent thickness of the character layer. I/4" Is not common but 1/8" inch is what you're often working with. Tiles are also often not perfectly uniform in thickness overall and so it may not be possible to perfectly install without lippage. I appreciate your miter skill on this installation but you're only able to accomplish this because your top layer is thick enough to do a radiused edge. I encourage designers to promote faux encaustic tiles not the real cement ones. In the final analysis, these original cement tiles must be sealed with a very hard and durable coating in order to protect this expensive tile that has been promoted by misguided promoters and designers. I live in the real world after the perfect installation. I'm often called to fix the ugly disaster floor where these tiles have been installed and try to get the grout stains, food oils and dyes out. I've been asked to see if I can remove lippage that even the best of installers can't avoid because of the inconsistency of this product. Wax and stripping any tile is just increasing maintenance far worse than even super market VCT. Promote the Porcelain version so clients can enjoy low maintenance and get the look they are wanting.

YOU GOT IT BROTHER! Sometimes there are better ways but, this time you've got it nailed. The reason for the jagged edge is the Portland is so much more brittle than the gray base cement. It's the same with a lot of glazed tiles. It's maddening sometimes. Great video.

Thanks, Tom. I didn't know the Portland was more brittle. Do you know why?

Oh man!!! This video came out one year too late for me ☹️ Nice job. If I ever lay cement tile again I'll remember this video. And you are right about the limited videos/resources on cement tile.

Good to see you again, been a while. This was a very good posting. Great topic, good information that is well explained and demonstrated. Camera work was fairly good too. You might think about doing a segment on different grouts for different applications, along with advantages of each in their appropriate application. I hate working with the epoxy grouts (less sticky texture, shorter work-time, less forgiving of surface residue) but it is all I'll use in a bath/shower environment. It's longer lasting, resists mold better and can be a true water barrier. I have a kitchen backsplash and large wet-bar backsplash/backwall to do, I'm debating epoxy for the resilience and strength or traditional modified for the ease of use and being "good enough". To me the price of each doesn't matter, when you realise the labor/time involved and the effort to do/redo either. I want what do the job and have it last for years, or until our (or my wife's) tastes change or we move. (15 - 20 years, I hope) Interested in your opinion.

You won't see any tile guys putting this method down Jordan. That is the correct way to cut and miter your concrete tile. When you don't have patterns to be 100% precise with, (a standard ceramic or porcelain for example) it's always best to miter right under that factory edge. in this case you nailed it. Something to check out if you're really concerned about protecting your miters would be the Finec profile by schluter. We use it quite a bit for miters on walls in light commercial and residential settings for additional protection to our miters. I prefer a clean miter without the profile however. Good job 👍

Jorden, very nice detail continuing that pattern up and over that curb. Do you have an opinion on material to build up the curb? Lately I’ve favored high density foam over wood because it seams less reactive to temperature changes. Would love to hear your thoughts (being a materials expert) Also, i assume an inexpensive saw might cause more chipping because of run-out - your thoughts?

I'm curious as to what you do after installation at the curb to break the sharp corner that must certainly be uncomfortable if not sharp enough to cut a foot. The Encaustic cement tile you feature seems would lend itself to aggressive sanding after installation and grouting since the color runs a couple millimeters deep and therefore would not sand through to the grey base before achieving the smoothed corner. What is your practice in this application? Thanks for the video, I'm about to do my first job with this tile and it will involve a miter.

Could you tape the edge you’re cutting to prevent chip out like you can with plywood? Do you make a mock-up of the curb assembly to test all those layers and the pattern layout?
@JordanSmithBuilds
@JordanSmithBuilds 5 жыл бұрын
Not easily. Cement is a ceramic (not as in a "ceramic tile" but in a general materials sense) and is amorphous. This means there are not "grains" or strands of fiber like wood. When cutting plywood, the tape holds these strands down and keeps them from tearing when the saw blade exits the cut. In cement, the chipping is caused by the impact of the saw, and the cements low ductility and toughness causes a brittle fracture. Tape could hold these fractured pieces together, but they would fall out as soon as the tape was removed. You could. I find sketches and math easier and quicker.

Check out diamond grit sponges for stone/tile. (not cheap) You will be able to get the chips out, and slightly round edge to prevent the sharpness. Your productivity will increase a lot.
