Sometimes the hardest person for you to correct is yourself. There's no ( shame ) in being wrong. The ( shame ) is choosing to stay wrong.

There is no societal value of shame. It exists to control young people by old crusty matrons and prudish old men. They have no fun or life left in them and don’t want to see anyone having a good time. I’m 62 so I understand this first hand. I’m surrounded by peers like this. It’s terrible.

I FELL IN LOVE WITH TURKEY AND THE PEOPLE! They were so, so, SO wonderful! On my last day atop Camlica, I was SO sad to be leaving Turkiye! I stayed in Eminounou...Kenon and all the other people were SO wonderful! Immigration to the Americas began in 1492 SO the USA is full of immigrants and refugees. If you are NOT Native American then you come from immigrant/refugee stock...I welcome you! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for the wonderful work you are doing! KEEP DOING IT, PLEASE! I disagree that shame isn't part of American culture. We just shame over different things. It's shameful to be ill. It's shameful to not be able to pay debt. Its shameful not to work. Its shameful not to parent in mainstream ways. Its shameful to take holiday at times deemed acceptable by your boss. Its shameful to get fired, or layed off.

I think that's more guilt than shame. People can try to make you feel guilty or inferior but people don't really shame you for these things due to the individualistic culture.
@ivechang6720
@ivechang6720 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-ht9oc7gw1f I disagree. There are plenty of books on culture, what elements are needed to define a culture and the tools cultures use to gain compliance. Just because shame is a tool most often associated with religion doesn't make it limited to that area of societal interaction. There are also psychological publishings about the harm of shame based child rearing strategies. Overall, I think like most tools it's useful but can be used dangerously. Thus effecting deep seated harm.
@user-ht9oc7gw1f
@user-ht9oc7gw1f 3 жыл бұрын
@@ivechang6720 I've never heard of the "shameful" things you listed. It's shameful to wear high heels? Since when? Usually it's praised. You must be open to sexual advances if it's during the daytime? Never heard that one either. Nobody really "shames" you in American culture for the other things listed. Maybe they'll make you feel guilty for being selfish and taking a holiday when you want but at the end of the day it's still your choice. It's ok to be selfish and it's ok to go through difficult times. People like to hear a good story of someone struggling then succeeding.

I grew up Irish American. I can relate to this. Don’t ever, ever embarrass me, was my mother’s and nana’s directive to me all my life. This dude is nukeing toxic ultra conservatism one piece at a time. Toxic ultra conservatism does not allow its victims to think beyond the limits set by the manipulator. It gives choices to their victims but from behind the scene controls the choices. It’s a mind control. The victims without knowing that they are being manipulated willfully imprison themselves inside their own thoughts by putting their consciousness/freethinking in a “jail cell”. Shaming is the main weapon of the manipulator. What Cenk is doing is breaking the cell in order to free freedom of thought of clueless individuals who have become victims of their manipulators.

In terms of manners, I think we need to find a happy medium. I find that there is a lack of politeness in America which leads to a lack of sensitivity and consideration for others. I say this as a person who immigrated to Canada as a young child and considers myself “Western” and Canadian in identity. I find that the huge emphasis on manners instilled in me led to feeling a bit of an “outsider” in my demeanour and other people’s behaviour leaves me wanting.

Don't forget: western society is uniquely aberrant in human history. Our obsession with individuality, "being yourself", goes against almost all historical communities. It's due to a number of factors, such as wealth and security, and historically the commitment to your village/tribe/group was essential to you and your family's survival. If you look at the ancient greeks and their writings, it's clear that they would have found the notion of "individual liberty" very nearly incomprehensible: everything was about the family, society and their city-state. But the west does have an equivalent: where many societies have shame, and use it as a method to correct others, in the west we have guilt ("you let yourself down"): also used as a weapon of control. But this should not be taken as being derogatory of either system: they are just part of the enormous variation in human beings and their societies.

@Jake B I never indicated what I preferred - just pointed out that different societies exist, implying that knee-jerk condemnation is not a good idea. Hospitality & honor (and the shame for breaching the ideals of hospitality & honor) are fairly central themes in Islam so it's not that surprising that it's also in Turkish culture. Perhaps it goes deeper than that and they are simply human concepts that pop up in cultures across the globe. That said, in spite of their prevalence too many of us don't take these concepts to heart - and some far too seriously.

Shame for me was brought on the Catholic religion that was BEAT into generations before me! I was raised on a Native American Reservation in Northern Wisconsin. Shame was trying to speak our language, or practice any of our traditions. This is the 7th generation now and we are finally trying to preserve and teach old and new generations almost all that was lost! But I can remember as a small child feeling shameful because I had darker skin and my long braided hair. 😢

And yes Herbert, somewhere in your family tree is the origination of your family, immigrants! Once you get beyond the unhelpful part of shame a human begins to see that shame based in wholesomeness and wisdom can be very helpful and even guard our own humanity. It’s about DIGNITY, inner DIGNITY for yourself an outer DIGNITY for the other person. But first you have to get through the Unwholesome shame. This is simply a description of a strong "honour culture", aka "shame culture". It's pretty firm and strong, in the Middle East. "The West" has gone a bit away from it, but (especially the US) is *NOT* free of it. Look up honour/shame culture vs guilt culture. Also note that "honour killings" and (the vast majority of) duels to the death, are both natural outcomes of honour culture …and the "honour" (or "face". Reputation, basically), in honour culture, is what the word honour really means and always has meant.

My mom is a Polish immigrant and I actually just said to my boyfriend the other day how when I am doing certain things around my apartment, I can hear my mom saying, “you should be SHAMED.” I always thought it was her immigrant English and messing up her saying “ashamed”, but no.. she means SHAMED.

I'm polish and it doesn't make sense to me. I get it when a parent says 'you should be ashamed' for doing something wrong, but 'you should be shamed' is not something I would have heard from my parents. Shamed by who? Shamed how?

For the people who don’t speak Turkish, it’s “ayıp”, not “ayip”. In uppercase letters: “AYIP”. The third letter “ı/I” does not have any equivalent in English.

As someone from Turkey and a part of the generation that Cenk is referring to, most of this is spot on. Shame is a good close translation, but in "ayip" there is certainly a strong element of honor or more specifically dishonor as well, and that is why for the most part it carries more weight with it than simply "shame". However, I will say that the concept of "ayip" is certainly not all bad. It is a strong part of our culture and depending on how the family (mainly the parents/elders) decide to use it, "ayip" will guide the next generations sense of moral compass. It can be overdone and I have seen examples of it, but I think when used sparingly it is necessary. When I had a chance to travel to Japan, I felt like there was a strong element of "ayip" in the culture. It exists in one level or another in most middle eastern and asian cultures. It is non-existent in some parts of Europe and in the US and it leads to the likes of the fat orange man and his family if you catch my drift...

I'm 9 years older I think than Cenck. Opposite growing up experience. We were given the room to do right and express. The trust from parents to children in the rural areas was overwhelming compared to the friends that lived in the country club area$$$$. They liked me in the country nature of their surroundings. My folks were the support and hard work ethics that made my life regretfully free.

.... cenk is kinda showing his political/social ideology here. he's an atheist/nihilist. doesnt mean we dont align on things politically. but coming from an orthodox religous family myself. politiness,shame and obiedience were a big part of my family and our interactions with other people. this idea of being especially nice applies to extended family, in laws, and acquaintances it doesnt really apply to my best friend, brother/sister, wife. im not turkish, but imagine as a pakistani person. its similar. wasn't really painful for me to be nice to others.

Please TYT keep your atheism to yourself. It is ( Ayb / shame / disrespectful ) to speak down other's who are different then you, just because you disagree with them. It is actually Arabic word meaning ( Shame and also said to tell someone show some respect) , used in almost all Muslim countries. Also In Many countries and cultures, When you are in someone else house , there are certain practiced religious or cultures etiquette that you supposed to practice when you know or are informed. You can't go someone else house and do whatever you want, as of it is your own house. Also there are rules when the come to your house. Simple example, you suppose to inform and wait knock and confirm first before entering their house and when you move around in their house rooms, toilet. To show you are someone who has respect for privacy.

This reminds me so much of southern culture, when you’re invited to someone’s home you aren’t remotely yourself, you’re the ideal human being, you don’t burp, shit, fart, need water or food, you are nothing but a homunculus. However if someone is in your home you bring them grapes and a fan, you never bring up politics or religion, like both situations are so unbelievably stressful lol

Mr. Uygur, ayıp doesn’t mean shame all the time. Ayıp also means it’s not polite. If you do something wrong in someone else is house that’s not a shame it’s not polite(ayip). Besides you are free, and welcome to laugh at someone else’s house.
