Central Television starts the day with Stewart White taking us from the daily opening (with blue IBA caption) through the 'enhanced' menu for a Wednesday and into ITV for Schools and Colleges and Yorkshire Television's 'Insight' with Derek Griffiths - note the non-standard YTV frontcap.

This brings back memories. Im in Chester & not in the Central region but get a great picture from Central full signal strength & even when analogue was on. Im at the top of a tower block & have a Log-periodic antenna on my balcony pointing to the Midlands, I am really in the Granada region but also get ITV Wales.

Yes I know in Chester you really are in the Granada area, but of course to the west you border onto ITV Wales, formerly HTV Wales of course. Also you would be able to receive Central from the Midlands if your aerial is pointing the right way. Of course too, on BBC I guess you are in the North West area, bordering onto BBC Cymru Wales or the BBC West Midlands area respectively.

@@brucedanton3669 Inhave a 20 element Log-periodic wide band (because this Midlands transmitter I receive has channels in group A & B band) I get full signal & quality on UHF Channels 23 & 26 & 47 from the Wreken Transmitter.

@@davidmorris-jones210 You are right of course. The signals are from the Wrekin transmitter which is part of the Midlands area. Thank you!

I'm quite surprised to see how quickly dropped the split moon Good Morning caption was, I wonder whether the IBA had something to say about their logo not appearing in the start up sequence originally.

Yeah you're so right it was dropped at the beginning of Central programmes too I loved to see it it was very impressive the replacement wasn't so good to see

I am guessing that the Central IBA caption here was shown from their start in January 1982 when of course they took over from ATV before then. Presumably too it was then shown until at least February 1983 when TV-am started of course, in all the ITV regions at the same time. I know that the start time before TV-am arrived was 9.30am in all ITV areas as far as I know. However, when TV-am started this later became 9.25am with filling in the short closedown after they had ended. At the time of course too, ITV would show For Schools series from 9.30am until 12 Midday noon, until June 1987. After that they went to Channel 4 or S4C in Wales from September 1987 onwards. When it was not term time the ITV areas would show different other series at the time. Except for Channel television who would oddly show the ETP1 test card often until 1.20pm or so. Also, the IBA caption start up had really gone from May 1983 as far as I know; a few months of course into TV-am having come on air at the time. Thank you of course anyway too!!

It wasn’t actually a take over, more of rebrand since the IBA told them that they need to become more Midlands centric or face actually being taken over by another franchise bidder. So they sold their Elstree Studios to the BBC which is in Hertfordshire and that’s not really the Midlands and built a new studio in Nottingham for broadcasts to the East Midlands area, keeping their former Birmingham studios as well for the West Midlands area.

Why is there no “Production” on the YTV front cap? I thought that this version of their ident was only used at the start of imports during this era.

@@jackmeadows7777Insight had a pre-1982 front-cap on it, and YTV are adding this 1982 caption live to cover it up. Maybe they just chose the wrong variant? Later in the term the 1982 “production” caption was inserted instead.

I've never seen that style Central/IBA caption before. I assume it didn't last long?

+Stuart Farrington We keep finding it on tape repeatedly across the first ±6 months of Central's output. So... ±6 months!

Didn't start-ups usually have a list of the transmitters that the license broadcast on?

In the mid-1970s, yes. But not before or after. Fashions change.

@jsam93: @ 0:17 the continuity announcer [ don't know who it is as I was born and bred in the TVS region ] states "Good Morning, this is Central that provides your programming on the Midlands Transmitters of the Independent Broadcasting Authority" they never actually mentioned the individual transmitters - some ITV regions did mention them like Yorkshire [ Emley Moor, Belmont [ after 1974 ] and associated, and Border TV [ Caldbeck, Selkirk and Associated ]. Some regional franchises did cover quite a few counties and it probably would have taken too long to mention every major transmitter for the region, so its just "Midlands transmitters". Thames/LWT was London Transmitters [ the main one being Crystal Palace], for us in TVS region after a few months without any announcement it was "This is TVS for the South and South East of England".
