Real time cab view of a passenger service from Central Railway Station in Sydney, NSW, to Newcastle, NSW.
Video has full audio apart from two conversations between myself and the Guard which are of no relevance to the video or the operation of the train.
22/02/14, departing Sydney Central at 1015hrs and arriving Newcastle Station at 1308hrs (5 minutes late!)
Run N139, V19 leading and V9 trailing.
Train driven by myself, as evidenced by running sheet at start of video.
Video also by myself, recorded on a RoadHawk HD dash cam.

Every second weekend, i’d go on a heavy V set from Wyong to Central with my pop. And we would play this game where we need to read the station signs of the stations we go past in the V set. It was fun! Then we have a suburban train day in Sydney for hours. We would then go back to central and take another heavy V set back to Wyong. I just want to thank you for making this video. It always reminds me of those fun times. And when i am out of high school, i want to apply as a train driver and work my way up to a almighty intercity train driver like you. I now always know the way home just in my phone! Kind regards ~ Carlo. R ~

I was crew with LVR taking the last steam train (3237) into Newcastle Terminal before they closed the line at Hamilton. Used to go to Woy Woy as a kid on the U series trains - have always loved that line especially the 1 mile Woy Woy Tunnel and the trip from there to Hawkesbury River. Lucky nothing major to slow you up at Wondabyne. Thanks again for a great ride.

I lived for a short while just above and to the side of that last tunnel 2:35:05 known as the ‘tick hole’. My dog would wander the bush around the area and always get bloody ticks, area is called ‘Garden Suburb’. I missed it when i moved closer to the uni at Waratah. Great vid, great memories.

Excellent...great vision of this historic line. I had seen these sights from steam train windows since the mid 50's but not from up front. Can you imagine the governments of today doing what was done back when this track, the western line and the south coast line were built from the 1850's. I would recommend interested persons look up the rich history of the northern line and how it was not fully completed until Hawkesbury bridge was built some time after sections of line operated either side of the Hawkebury

I took the line of lights at 45:03 to be an indicator that we would be going straight on at Berrowra, instead of taking the left turnout at 45:27 into the platform loop. Yet today, I travelled that route, and the line of lights was there, but we turned into the loop (and had slowed down to do so). It wasn't clear why, given that there was no train waiting on the main line to return to Central. So, now I'm confused - how does the driver know whether to slow down there?
@AlistairHarding
@AlistairHarding 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Sylvia, that first signal you mention is simply a repeater for the following signal. The following signal will indicate if going straight ahead or turning out into Platform 3. For northbound intercity trains, if stopping at Berowra, the vast majority of the time they will stop on Platform 3. This keeps Platform 2 free for a suburban train which is probably right behind the intercity train. The driver of the suburban train will then swap ends and prepare to head back south.
@sylviaelse5086
@sylviaelse5086 5 жыл бұрын
@@AlistairHarding The intercity train I was on didn't stop at Berowra. I expected it to use the platform 2 line, as did your train, so as not to need to slow down. Fortunately, if it lost time because of this, it made it up by the time we reached Hamilton, where I had a 4 minute connection with the Hunter line train.

Probably lucky to used 2% of the time, if that. It's only on request. Passengers wanting to board the train will wave at the driver, passengers wanting to alight there have to notify the guard before we get there, the guard then notifies the driver.

What’s the fastest section in the line ? What speed have you been up to ? And what’s the potential maximum speed of these units ? Thanks.
@AlistairHarding
@AlistairHarding 5 жыл бұрын
Line speed varies by type of train. For this train the fastest speed on this line is 125 IIRC. Fastest I've driven is 120. However other areas of the line for different trains are rated at 160kph, although it's rare for trains to reach that speed in any case. I'm told that when these V sets first came out they were regularly driven at around 150 but over the years they've been de-rated.

In general, the NSW 'double light colour light' signalling, the light at the top indicates the condition of the block you're about to enter, (occupied = red, unoccupied = green, turnout = yellow), whereas the bottom light indicates the current setting of the next signal (clear = green, caution = yellow, stop = red, etc). There are exceptions and qualifiers, of course.
@breadfruit9276
@breadfruit9276 Жыл бұрын
Bit late but if you’re still interested, the letters above signals indicate what route is set where more than 1 is available, e.g S might be for the suburban line, or south (never consistent). The only A I can think of is leaving Turrela the A will take you via the airport line, as opposed to the E taking you to the Illawarra local at Tempe.

If I'm reading it right, then at 1:35:29 the speed limit is reduced to 90, having been 110, then at 1:35:44, further down the straight track, it's increased again to 100. That seems a bit odd.

You are correct, well spotted! I can offer no explanation for that - I'm not a track designer!
@AlistairHarding
@AlistairHarding 5 жыл бұрын
There's no advance warning of speed changes. You just need to know where they are. This is actually quite important as we need to be doing the correct speed when we pass the sign - it's not like a car where you see the sign and start slowing down and don't reach that speed until you're past the sign.
@steeltrap3800
@steeltrap3800 5 жыл бұрын
@@AlistairHarding Yes, a remarkably crude system given what's been available in other countries for many years. The Netherlands, for example, has a trackside system that displays the speed to the driver on their speedo; it's present for all their different trains, and on all tracks. And it has one of the busiest rail systems in the world. At the very least you'd think there'd be some mobile device system available with everything contained in it and able to read the train's position, thus displaying current limit, next limit and distance to the change.

To be honest I can't remember the exact limit there - and it's been nearly 3 years since I drove that route. (I no longer drive trains). Is there anywhere in Sydney that hasn't been tagged by spray paint?

I'm in Sydney now from Melbourne and was just thinking how much worse Melbourne is for 'tagging'. But then when it comes to a train network Melbourne has fallen miles off the speed set by NSW.

Somehow, the V-sets stay pretty tidy! Especially when presentation has the necessary solvents and time. Oscars and most of the Sydney Trains fleet get regularly tagged.

V19 always reminds me of Steely Dan's song when I happen to get it. I hope they've fixed the overhead vent since last time. Check out the Simon and Garfunkel "Hitscene 1970" video clip for the song "Baby Driver". You will recognize the scenery! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/etqJhMeD2tPcqJc.html Must get a dashcam! Double-Gosford early tomorrow.

This is the train ride from Stepford Central to Savannah Terminal via Valdosta and East Chaseville. I don't know where I will be getting off at, but the cafe and first class towel service are great! The COVID 19 Special train consists of the following: 1 NJTransit Comet I Cabcar 1 Amtrak Amfleet Cafe 1 NJTransit Comet II Coach for First Class 2 MARC Nippon Sharyo IIB Coaches for Business Class 5 TVCTA Rail Comet VII coaches for standard coach seating. And 1 Siemens Charger SC-44 Locomotive. The consist numbers of the COVID 19 Special trains change daily. So keep that in mind. Signed, Angela, Matthew, and 18 others.

Strap-hanging on the Paris metro is no fun. Those drivers are heavy on the controls.

What's that constant ratchet noise? Sounds like very primitive train controls.

That is the throttle lever. It does come across in the video louder than what you'd notice if you were in the cab, as the microphone/camera is pretty close to it.

Hey there - the real time means that the video speed wasn't made faster or slower - it was in "real time" - but yeah I think it was about 10 years ago that they stopped the trains going all the way into Newcastle - hope that clears things up for you 😊
