In this video, Simon presents centrifugal fans. Centrifugal fans turn air at 90 degrees. He is presenting two forward-curved fans, one without housing and one with housing, and one backward-curved fan (ebm-papst EC RadiCal fan). Simon demonstrates the air intake and where it is thrown out by the blades at ninety degrees.
There are five fundamental types of centrifugal fan which are defined by their blade type:
- backward-curved blades
- backward-curved blades
- backward-curved inclined aerofoil blades
- radial blades
- forward-curved blades.
They are available in housed and non-housed versions. Mixed-flow fans are also available, which is a combination because it turns air at less than 90 degrees.
Centrifugal fans are typically used for shifting air against reasonable static pressure, from around 150Pa up to around 2500Pa. Typical applications are in buildings where air needs to be moved against static resistance such as a duct or heat exchanger.
Simon also shows the difference of backward-curved fans (plug fans) in an air-handling unit as compared to a forward-curved AC fan. The plug fan positively pressurises the plenum whereas the forward-curved fan blows air in the direction of a duct. The air intake also works differently.
Centrifugal fans are also defined by their efficiency. The standard shows that backward-curved fans are much more efficient than forward-curved fans.
