Centroid is breaking barriers and the perfect example of implementing disruptive market forces that benefit the industry and the end users. Really like how Centroid has taken the time to explore details many ignore. Hope too see your at PRI in a few weeks.

I would like to see some exploded diagrams; that would show exactly "how" to install the "X" and "Y" modifications using stepper or servo motors. I bought a Grizzly lathe that looks very much like this one. I am very excited about doing this to the lathe; and also to my Grizzly mill, which is just to the right of the lathe. Not sure how it would work on the 'Z" axis on the mill. What with the "knee" and "quill" affecting "Z". But I am sure there is a way. Wow I cant get over this video. It has enlightened me so much. I found out about "Centroid" and its "Acorn" controller by accident; after ordering parts for my new "OpenBuilds,com" mini mill; using "Clear Path" motors. I fell in love with them. But I never dreamed how easy it would be; once one got the installation and mastery of the software behind us; when it comes to metal lathes and mills. Not to mention that I am a "Chess" player and I AM going to make 'em out of brass! GAR-OWN-TEED!. "If (of course) My Lord is willing and the creek don't rise!" Technology is running faster than a speeding Jet plane. Praise Jesus! Wow!

Really impressed by this CNC software. How would Acorn handle a part with holes in one continous bar stock on both ends and threads inside each? Would this program prompt you to manually turn the bar around and then program re-center to the 2nd end or would we have to create two different files which would pick up where the 1st file left off?

I am a hobby machinist and I am impressed with Acorn video presentation. I have a CNC Router now with Mach 3/UCCNC. I also have a manual lathe. I have been researching what control to use to convert the lathe to CNC. I was really thinking of buying Mach 4 but after I saw this video, looks like I am leaning more towards Acorn now. I already bought DMN servos and a VFD. Right now the lathe has a 3HP 3 phase induction motor. I was thinking of changing it to an Inverter Duty Motor. (Any recommendation what motor to use?) TO: Centroid - Do you happen to have a list of part you used to convert the lathe to CNC? Thank you.

I too noticed the drill it flexing as it drilled which the center drill did too, which was the start of the problem. Also the tap flexed as it went into the hole so you can see the bore is off center. Is that many a little play in the nut in axis when the center drill started? Do you have ball screws or acme rod in the machine?

Check it with go no-go gages. As we say at work "if the Go goes and the No-GO doesn't ... it's good." Secondly they are not making parts for DOD, NASA, or contract work for Lockheed Martin. Maybe for you, but if am drilling a center hole in round stock I want it in the center. I may not make stuff for NASA but the stuff I make for myself should at least be true and straight. Also a Go/No-Go gauge just tells you if your threads size is correct, not if it's a straight bore or not. Think about what you want from your work for a while.

Excellent video! Question: When the software pauses for a tool change, does it allow you to jog the cutter and touch off an axis? When changing end mills, I would like to touch off on the z axis after I change a tool to reset the z reference, and then resume operation. I'm using LinuxCNC now, and it is not easy to do this. It would be great if Centroid 12 allowed this. Thanks.

Very cool, thanks for sharing and nice feature with the rigid tapping. UCCNC can also do G33 threading even in mill mode on a 4th axis, it can do multiple thread starts, I went with UNCC because the Acorn does not have Modbus to talk to auxiliary devices that i control with modbus...custom tool changers and lube aimers , unloading robots etc. I do like the looks of Acorn in every way except for lack of Modbus/serial.

Cheap Asian lathes usually have just *_ONE_* screw...the feed/threading screw. There are not two screws. So a stepper drives just the ONE screw. Ifyou look at 0:23 the cover is concealing *_ONE_* screw. That's just how cheap asian lathes are !

Is the PC software available to run on Linux, like the CNC10? I have to be honest, I really like the Centroid control, but the switch to using Windows as the host PC really turned me off. I bought the CNC10 system back in 2004 because it was Linux based, and I never regretted that.

The computers in these run one piece of software. How much do you think you'll even deal with the OS directly? It runs on Windows 10 because Windows 10 is a single standard OS unlike the umpteen distributions of Linux. They have to support customers who paid tens or hundreds of thousands for equipment. Trying to do so with Linux as the OS would be a nightmare. We're just lucky we get access to the same software at such a low price but we are not their main market so either cope or find another hardware and software solution that works under Linux. Good luck finding anything that's even close.

i wondered the same thing when i first saw it...(it was on the lathe when i bought it) it is a hard stop that will stop the tool post from hitting the chuck. guess they needed that with the Mach3 system that was previously installed on the lathe? who knows.:-) I did install honeywell limit switches on the Lathe on X Z and on the tailstock and wired them into the Acorn board and the Acorn CNC12 software has auto homing and software travel limits with decell to that limit.
@CrimFerret
@CrimFerret 6 жыл бұрын
That's what it looks like to me. I'd want switch style stops too, but that last ditch physical stop would make for far less damage to repair if something screwed up. I assume there's some sort of shear pins or such so the lead screws don't get mangled if that were to happen
