As long as fiscal debt keeps increasing, wealth will not be zero sum. But its distribution is more skewed every passing day. Per capita income is such a misleading signal in this regard, its almost useless beyond a few contexts. On the question of status- it's not just Indians- most asian cultures have that aspect of asserting social status, including the Chinese. Where i think india is failing is its lack of funding in basic sciences, research and education. Making a credit profiling app is fine along with all the other things the startups are doing here but these mostly don't advance society in the same sense as say the LED lights invention did or lithium chemistry did. 75yrs on and we still do not have a manufacturing ecosystem in many sectors.

Technology whether we like it or not,is going to make many jobs obsolete but before that it will make make it easily replaceable and put a cap on the income even if a person is continuously learning and upgrading(reason being COMPETITION).This change is being created by billionaires in every sphere of life.If the billionaire isn't doing it directly he/she will fund entrepreneurs who are doing it.TRUTH IS,HUMANS ARE BEING REPLACED AND SOCIETY HAS NO CHOICE.but as kunal said this has a huge potential to create social unrest.

I think the biggest problem is population. So many people having no decent standard of living. This leads to frustration, jealousy and malafide attitude of poor towards well to do (not rich). This in turn forces well to do people to distance themselves from poor people to save themselves from toxicity. Thus enters class distinction. This maybe over-simplification..but it's along those lines.
