My Father 1920-2012 was a Finnish Army veteran. A Hero of the Winter and Continuation wars. He was that machine gunner that never gave up.

As a SAW gunner, I could always tell who the civilians were just by this quote. It's shortly after deploying that you realize the things back home *DON'T* fucking matter if you don't stay alive long enough to get back to them. When you're in a firefight, there's only 3 things in the world that matter and it's never been more simple; the marines to your sides, the enemy in your face and the gun in your hands, *that is it.* Once you actually understand how evil these people are, it becomes very easy to hate them. It's easy to cut a man in half with your MG when that man advocates for the literal enslavement of women and children, when that man took part in the executions of the innocents, when that man is willing to kill himself just to take you with him, when that man kills your best friend, when that man comes for you. When it's either *you* or *him* you forget about the shit back here *REAL* quick

In 1981 a Canadian WWII vet told me his war story ; enlisting 3 Sept. 1939, narrowly avoiding capture during the Dieppe Raid . (Years later he'd heard a rumour that they were there to grab an Enigma machine), Juno Beach on D Day, the Scheldt- calling in Hawker Typhoons to eliminate stubborn SS resistance, taking prisoners, interrogating them while they all smoked together then moving out leaving them with a Montrealer called 'the Butcher'. 20 minutes later 'the Butcher' caught them up sans prisonniers. I was an arrogant young man in those days and asked if it was all worth it. He thought for a minute then replied "Fuck, no. We were used. " He elaborated that, "War is a horizontal struggle between peoples but life is a vertical struggle against authority." He concluded with, "Authority is your enemy, the government is your real enemy, not some Kraut in the HKL. Authority starts wars. If we'd paid more attention in the 30's maybe we could have avoided war".

I don't quite agree about the war. Your doctor was right about political analysis and verticality/horizontality. But, I who fought in the French army from Kosovo to Mali via Afghanistan and the Ivory Coast, I can tell you that going to war is both extremely rewarding and even incredibly enjoyable. The first time I found myself "on fire", I literally shit myself on it and it made my comrades laugh. It happens to a lot of men when the first encounter is a bit rough. I suffered, I saw a lot of suffering and I feel like what we did was for nothing. Besides, the enemies we fought in foreign countries, we find them in France now... But if I had the choice, I would do it again without a moment's hesitation. For the experience, for the camaraderie, to have images in your head...

I have great respect for veterans, especially those who fought in WWII, and I agree with most of what he said, except one point. That war was unavoidable the moment Hitler used the Reichstag Fire to consolidate power. He was a warmonger out for blood. The French could have stopped him in 1936, when he remilitarized the Rheinland, but only through a war that neither their military nor their public had the stomach for. Sometimes the authority on one side wants war and all we can do is oppose evil like that. WWII from the side of the Allies is one of those rare occasions of a just war.

Not really. Germany full well knew the manpower capacity of the USSR. What they did wrong was they miscalculated the real capacity of their own army to rapidly find and destroy Russian forces. After the debacle of 1941 the Soviet army just retreated faster than the Germans could advance. And only attacked in winter when the Germans had no preparation.

The mistake is thinking they are Russian red army, meanwhile reality it's the SOVIET red army. From belarus to Bering strait, from frozen wastes of Siberia to dry mountains of turkmenistan, all were Soviets and fought against the axis as one. USSR is a union, not a race, or an ethnicity. Vast land with vast resource and manpower. And the Germans just gave them a reason to fight as one.
