I tried to use this faceting method with Coleman raku clay, because I thought it would be perfect for raku glazes. I watched Lehman's video about 10 times, and followed all his techniques closely, including fast spinning while expanding the faceted clay. After 7 attempts I concluded that it doesn't work with groggy clay. Groggy clay is not plastic enough to twist and spiral with lifting. The facets stay vertical. The thinner parts sometimes get too thin rather than spreading around. I will try again with porcelain.

Cool! I learnt this faceting technique from a very good online tutorial by Hank Murrow. I've never dreamt of attempting the final wooden rib thing, but I will now. I'm sure it'll make me cringe the first time, as he says, but it will be worth the cringing.

Any tips on how to get that good twist affect? I've made several today and the facets aren't moving much.

The thinner the cylinder wall, the lesser the resistance. The smaller amount of water, the greater amount of friction/drag when opening the form. Both should help contribute to the amount of twist.

Sponge your interior so it’s not super wet so your hand has some resistance but not to much I like to dry it as much as I can and use a damp hand to expand

I'm having this same problem. Spent two days in the community pottery studio and perforated 5 times and only didn't twice, but the facets didn't twist. Someone else more experience than me on wheel tries and same thing, no twist.

@mjchandlerscorner785 Did you also make your cylinder skinny and taller? That way as you push out, you push farther. I have gone through mine also. I have heard it takes quite a bit of practice.
@mjchandlerscorner7859 ай бұрын
How thick does the wall need to be before the facets are sliced and do you slice half or a third of the thickness away? I haven't been able to get the facets to twist when I push the walls out from the inside. 😢
@triciac10198 ай бұрын
The few I did didn't turn out that wonderful when I did it. It looks like the cylinder has to be very narrow, so when you push out, it twists more. I think also you would trim away about 1/3. It does take a lot of practice to learn this, as per other potters.

You have to have quite a thick wall and very narrow cylinder in order to facet only 6 times as Lehman does. If the cylinder is wider, and the wall too thin, you will cut through no matter how nice a cheese cutter you have. Or you can do 10 slimmer shallower facet strips all around but you don't get the same effect.

Their is a way to recondition porcelain throwing clay after it has lost it's elasticity. I think it was by adding Epson salt to the reclaim. Anyway, I try to give justice to clay the first time rather than throwing it to death. Saving time on reclaiming.
