The cracks happened because they cooled too fast. That, is likely because the space inside the main area of the kiln was too large. You need to stack these kinds of things as tight as possible, separating them with bits of ceramic from failed projects (ceramic, not rocks wood or other materials). If you burn a pot, the area around it should be no bigger.

@Jim McCarthy Yes.. Usually when you bisque fire you load the kiln completely full. It helps maintain a thermal mass, which promotes slower cooling.
@varsam
@varsam 4 жыл бұрын
@Jim McCarthy You can imagine it as a bow of water and put few smaller stones that you kept on fire, the moment the stones touch the water they will start boil it. If you put just put one of the stones it will cool down and warm the water but not boil it. Staking a lot of things in the oven they all will keep more heat in the cooling time slowing it down. If i remember corectly the romans used it on steps 3-4 klins on steps, first big pots stacked, 2nd klin smaller, 3rd even smaleer and like that whit 1 burning bake them all sizes.

maybe you need to let it dry for longer, its at least 3 to 4 weeks
@pavellenivtsev4773
@pavellenivtsev4773 4 жыл бұрын
There are many reasons: 1) An invisible air bubble can be "squeezed" into the clay layer. 2) The product may dry unevenly. Or it is not possible to roll out a perfectly smooth layer of clay, and this difference in thickness in one product causes the ceramics to break in the oven. 3) There is excessive tension in the clay. This is when the raw product was transferred from the table to the stand for drying and accidentally bent a little in some place. And the clay remembers the deformation and then along the line of this bend can crack.

It took some time to find these videos; 11/13/22; on pottery. I was in awe of the entire process, from sourcing the material, pulling clay from underneath the water piece-by-piece, to the design and turning the wheel, and building the kiln. Everything turned out beautifully. Next time after the piece is dry, clean it up, such as the bottom of the piece. You can make sculpting tools from bamboo for that. The piece with the crack is worth keeping. This was another very good video, looking inside the kiln was spot on and you working into the night. This was good editing.
@whitewolf5202
@whitewolf5202 4 жыл бұрын
Cracks occur when drying and firing and the pottery can explode if there's trapped moisture or air and if it dries to quickly so be sure to get all the trapped air out, and let it get bone dry out in shade before firing. You might also consider making bricks to build a stove or oven for cooking. And the cracked stuff still has a use. Break it down into dust or very small pieces and use it in the next batch of clay.
@Finwolven
@Finwolven 4 жыл бұрын
If you put the subtitles on, he air-dried the pottery for a week before firing - it was bone dry. The reason for the crack was likely cooling too fast, or, less likely, a miniature air bubble trapped inside. There was another comment on how the kiln should be stacked as full as possible. But as you point out, grog from grinding up failed bits is going to make next batch much stronger. For the next batch of pottery he also needs to make some kiln helpers, little bits of fired clay that can be used to stack unfired clay items on top of and inside one another, to reduce the likelihood of cracking like the big pot.

Props to this dude for actually being able to stay up all night and keep that kiln going for well over 24hrs straight. I know from a couple of vids I've seen that making pottery the primitive way is a very long, grueling process.

Nope just a wood block on a wood rod through another block of wood and resting on a rock at the bottom if I remember correctly. it likely got some clay and water flow down to provide some lubrication and that is what is letting it spin better than at the start.

Same with all the "iron" that he forges with. That crap is bronze or I'm not breathing. I'm no expert but I do some forging here and there and you *cannot* forge steel the way he does in his videos. I do enjoy the videos though and find them relaxing. So I give him a pass on stuff like that.

@@liquidKi Clay basically is withered stone. It is often found by a river as you can see in the video. The gray/brownish clay you see at first he is piercing with his machete that is a good example for some kind of natural clay. I have the same clay in my area but the perfect white clay is very suspicious! It looks manufactured.
@masterofsurvival5816

@@machinegunpreacher2469 That´s exactly what I was think :-) It is enjoyable but obviously fake. It is always the same scheme. When it comes to the important part the camera is now far away or there is something blocking the freesight. Than a cut happens or he shows some random impressions of the landscape/nature and in the next scene a crude iron bloom has turned into some "fine" metal bars or a basket is filled with perfect white clay :-D
