Very useful info. My old boyfriend always said, “take care of your tools and they’ll take care of you”. My clamshell actually left a mark on my plate. At first I was annoyed and bought another plate and same thing happened. It just gives my prints character.

Great info. I just played with my 5X7 and realized i need to oil it. Somehow we must be on the same wave length! Storage containers and now conditioning gel plates! Thanks for sharing. You do beeautiful work, very clear explanations and i am very thankful, as a beginner, to hear your thoughts and your "formulas" for ephemera. It's not as easy for me to figure out things as when i was much younger. When someone has a plan, no need to reinvent; just modify and make it your own. P says "Be prepared to modify your (or someone else's) plan." 😉❤👍TFS.

When I first discovered the art of gel printing, I thought my granddaughter would enjoy creating using the plate. But they were quite expensive. I watched videos on how to make your own. So I gave it a try. It turned out well & she did enjoy making prints with it. I need to dig it out & give it a try. Thank you for caring for it.

Ceri, I love that there is a reason for everything you do! I was aware of the cleaning technique, however, the conditioning was brilliant. I live in Arizona where the humidity is normally very low and everything dries out quickly. Thanks for the detailed demonstration! I am definitely not as good at storing my plates, but i do periodically condition them, usually when i have stubborn paint that just won't lift off. I have painfully discovered from various intensive craft sessions that I am allergic to mineral oil😢, so I carefully glove up before massaging it into my plate, but it's doable. I also sometimes just wash my plates in the sink with soapy water first 😉.

Hi Ceri thank you for the lovely video! Since we mostly use acrylics on these plates, do you think a brush cleaner (the type you would use after doing an acrylic painting) would be good to use to get off some more of that paint residue before conditioning with the baby oil? Wonderful video. Curious about the releasing of oil on the first prints you pull after conditioning. Do you do a pull with no intention of keeping it?...let it sit a bit on the newly conditioned plate so any excess oil may come off on that trial print? I like the baby oil, too, but I didn't condition both sides so that was new information for me. I will look into those storage containers to keep my plates safe. Thank you Ceri!

@CeriGriffiths
@CeriGriffiths Жыл бұрын
Tissue paper might tear if it takes on excess oil, wax paper should work but be aware it’s not leaving a film on your plate, parchment paper should be fine, you could even use baking paper which comes on a roll.

Hi Ceri. thanks for this video. I have been kind of afraid of my jelly plate. So this helps me to know that I can help them if I mess them up to a certain extent. If you know what I mean. I do have an issue with it in that when I grayer the paint on it seems to bead up sort of. You may have answered this in a previous video but since I am a new subscriber I haven’t gotten to that one yet. Is there something I should do or certain brands of supplies I need to keep this from happening? Have you heard of this before? Thanks for all you do it’s been wonderful to find you!
@CeriGriffiths
@CeriGriffiths Жыл бұрын
Hi Cindy, beading of paint on a gel plate usually happens when you have a high flow or thinner consistency of paint, it can also happen if you’ve got residual oil on your gel plate. And then there are some mediums that just bead. You’re not doing anything wrong.

I never would have guessed how EXPENSIVE gel plates are!! While I save my pennies for one (or more), would it be worthwhile to get a smooth surface 18 x 18 inch tile to practice with? Are there any other surfaces that can be utilized that are less costly but give the same result?? Glass, plexiglass??? I made my own Tim Holtz glass mat with a shatterproof shelf (tempered glass) from our old refrigerator, and it's the bomb-diggity!! And it was WAYYY cheaper.
@CeriGriffiths
@CeriGriffiths 5 ай бұрын
You can lay paint down on any flat shiny surface, lay paper onto it and then immediately pull it up but you’re not going to be able to leave your paper down to be pulled later. Every surface will give a unique effect.

Marylyn that truly depends on how often you use it, I use my gel plate on average two days a week but its a full day of working on the plate and then I condition and clean my plate approx every eight weeks.....if I remember.
