Learn how to make a mermaid tail, her body, her hair, and her resin filled sea shell pond. Perfect for anyone looking for a polymer clay and resin tutorial, for fantasy nerds & mermaid wanna-bes, or for anyone interested in art dolls & doll making.
Learn how to add glitter, gloss, and Angelina fibers onto translucent polymer clay to make a mermaid tail that is particularly sparkly when it glistens in the sun.
This tutorial opens with a dialogue between the Little Mermaid and the Sea Witch, from the classical fairy tale, The Little Mermaid, by Hans Christian Andersen. I hope you enjoy!

I really appreciate feedback on the story part of the tutorial... I love fairy tales, so I really want to include a bit of that in my videos, but still unsure if people looking to find out how to make something will want a bit of a story first, so thank you for mentioning it.

This is such a detailed creation! I love mermaids and seashells, and mythical creatures in general. I also liked the little quotes from The Little Mermaid at the beginning of each video. I was very relaxing to watch your process in creating the sculpture; you're the kind of person I'd love to meet and have a cup of tea and talk about everything magical. Sorry if it sounds a little silly. Anyways, I'm looking forward for more videos of yours! Have a good day

I've been watching A LOT of sculpting and miniatures vids while finishing my thesis to keep me calm and this is only my second time watching yours but I already love your vid style, it has a great injection of humour and your tips are really useful and interesting even if I'm not planning on making the product. Just cool to see how it's done. The sea footage and the music is certainly helping me to keep chill.

Hi Derek, Thanks again for your interest. While I suppose some might do otherwise, I wouldn't recommend an art doll as a toy for a child. My main concern would be the doll hands when the child wanted to dress or undress the doll. The clay I use is very strong, but art dolls are usually very pricey since they are hand sculpted, I'd hate for something to happen accidentally. Ball jointed dolls are often used like toys in that the owners will dress them up or display them in different poses around the house, that sort of thing, but, again, the price makes it more of an adult keepsake (it'd be a great keepsake for a child but not really to be used as a child's toy). Hope that helps, again, thank you for the interest. :)

+CertainlyCaroline the thing with fondant is they're climate sensitive, low or no tolerance at all to humidity 😩 I've stopped making cake stoppers but I still have the molds, it's going to be a new hobby for me, using polymer clay this time. thanks to your channel, it has inspired me 😊

Sorry, I mean the quality of hair. Where can i take it from (when i have no dog, haha)? How to create it by doll making is very interesting and fine to see how you do that :o)

Is it possible you can make a witch doll? That has always been something I really wanted to see but not make it like the cartoon witch that has a pointy hat. I want a with that's kinda reassembles Disney's hocus pocus witches and would it be troublesome to add a book and a cauldron? THANKS!!

There are some witch art dolls by other artists that I really admire; some truly amazing work out there. I don't have any plans in the near future to create a witch, but I do have some ideas brewing in my head. Thank you for the suggestion, I appreciate your feedback.

I love this. I have been trying to figure out how to make armatures , so I do not use as much exspensive clay. I was wondering if there is a reason you only use white floral tape? I have green but am hesitant to try it untill I hear what you say. :)

I wouldn't go with green, but you might as well try it on an experimental 'doll'. My concerns about green... there may be some places on your doll that end up a little thinner than other places as you refine things, perhaps a green undertone will show up. I'd be a little concerned the green might rub into the clay as you apply it onto the armature. I could be totally wrong though because I've never tried green myself, so you might want to experiment on something you don't care about. Let me know your results if you end up experimenting.

I'm just curious but is there any reason you don't use wire to support the clay on the hands when sculpting? Tina Yu does very beautiful sculptures that remind me of your and she has a great video of her sculpting hands. I love your style of art❤️

Awesome question. The way I demonstrated is just one way of sculpting hands, since Miss Mermaid has a shell bed, her hands didn't need wire support. That said, I've found ProSculpt clay (there I go again, I'm not compensated at all for mentioning them, I just truly love their clay) to be extremely strong and flexible at the same time. I've tested thin finger-like pieces for durability, and have come to the conclusion that hands made with ProSculpt, without wire support, are pretty darn durable. If I were making a BJD or dollhouse doll, I'd use wire. I have a hands tutorial in the works that will demonstrate my method for sculpting hands on a wire support. Thanks for the question, Madison.

Does the resin harden or? I kinda want to make some figurines, put them in small jars and fill it with resin, but I've never used resin before, so I don't know if it hardens or what does it feel like? lol

Oh yes, the resin hardens completely, but it always looks wet. Amazing stuff, really.

I think most people collect art dolls for display, however ball jointed dolls are used more like toys, in a way, because their joints move. Sometimes art dolls are made for dollhouses.

Hi Rainbow Surprise, Thank you kindly for your interest in my work. Really appreciate it. Hope I don't disappoint too much but I've got too many ideas in my head involving fairy tale nonsense to do anything else right now. I'm a bit obsessed with stuff like Lord of the Rings, Alice in Wonderland, any old fairy tale like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan, anything involving fairies, etc, so that's be my focus. But, again, thank you kindly for your suggestion.

great tutorial! How many hours it takes to make this one doll? What if someone asked you to make 10 of them and happy to pay you? Would you make each doll individually or there are ways to use one doll as a master mold and multiply somehow? Thank you :)

That's a great question. I started typing out my reply here on KZfaq and, after two paragraphs, I realized I should just write a blog post about it. So, here's my reply. certainlycaroline.com/how-many-hours-does-it-take-to-make-an-art-doll/ Thanks again, Super Kitty!

Wow, thank you so much Thea! I really enjoyed making her and I'm thrilled you like my work. I do have a shop, the link is in the video description... I think I wrote something like, "if you'd like a mermaid of your own to have and to hold", or some such thing. Thank you once again!
