Cervical Dystonia (aka Spasmatic Torticollis) is a condition where for unknown reasons the muscles of the shoulder and neck have episodic/transient episodes of spasm and tightness. This can be very uncomfortable and even painful. Here Dr Sutter of Eugene, OR discovers an underlying dental problem and when corrected, the Dystonia improved significantly.

Gayle, I published this case in a book chapter I wrote. You can download the whole chapter in a PDF for under 40 bucks if your interested. Believe me when I say the scientific community is not interested in publishing. You would not believe the politics involved. BTW, I make no money on the chapter whether or not the chapter is purchased. I wrote it up for the patients to guide the doctors! The book Chapter reviews 4 cases, This one (Cervical Dystonia), Meniere's Disease, Trigeminal Neuralgia, and Phantom Bite. If you are interested I can send you the link

+Douglas Patterson She is doing fine....She is noticing continued healing. She has spent 40 years in a pathologic position (much like and alarm clock that has been wound too tight). It takes a while sometimes. I continue to follow her and the changes in the bite remain stable!

what is the best treatment for myoclonus dystonia? I have head shaking/shaking/jerking? do u think cutting the nerves around my neck would work n stop the movements? i would rather that than DBS.
@2koolaree
@2koolaree 6 жыл бұрын
penelope May - Penelope- do not even think about cutting the nerves in your neck. There still is not enough science to prove its effectiveness and its soooo permanent. Botulinum toxin A is the only treatment today, for most forms of Dystonia, that is proven to be successful in correcting Dystonia, in my case Cervical.

I think I have focal dystonia. I play tennis, and when I try to hit forehand my left arm (I'm lefty) would start strange movement. Also, it happens when I hit serve, even golf. But It doesn't happen with backhand stroke. When I hit right handed golf, no problem at all. This symptom started about 35 years ago and very slowly it's getting worse and worse. These days, sometimes I cannot control my left hand when writing on a board on the wall(I'm a teacher). Do you think you can help me? or do you know any doctor do this treatment in Texas? How long does it take and how much is it for the complete treatment? Thank you

Currently there are no DTR trained doctors in AZ. Most of these patients have an underlying Dental Occlusion that needs to be corrected. Most of medicine has not connected the dots unfortunately. You need a computer to "see" it. I have another video that is coming out as soon as I can splice it all together. Occlusion is not the only player in the CD game, but it is a major player for sure. CD cases are extremely complex, and take at least a year, but in my experience 50% reduction in pain/symptoms is achievable. Hope that helps. You can call the office and I am happy to talk to you. Out of office until next week. 541-683-7500

d B I was diagnosed with cervical dystonia at the age of 54 but had suffered with my neck caving in on my right side and my friends would ofter asked (while driving) what I was looking at because my head was always turned to the left but my eyes were focused on the road. I actually told I had carpal tunnel which could lead to the neck area. This was BS. I lived with this problem for several years before I was diagnosed with CD in 2007. Most people start with medicine at first because it is cheaper then the next step which is Botox A treatments. The cost of the Botox depends on the amount they use. My problem was so advanced I had to start with the Max witch is (I believe) is 360 mg. Each bottle was around $500.00 each It takes 3 for me and were injected every 3 months. I also take 4 different meds as well. I am now doing the shots every 4 months and trying to stretch it out every 5 months but my doctor said she will take me in for the shots if I feel I can't make it through the months. I get around 10 shots directly into the muscles around my neck, and I won't lie to you it is painful. Some doctors use a machine to find the right muscle and the needles are larger but my doctor knows by feel where the muscles are so no big needles. I may be able in time to stretch it out every 6 months but have been advised that may be my time limit. The cause of CD is not really known but was explained to me is that there are nerves in the brain that will attach to other nerves that causes this problem. The worse scenario would be to have the nerve clipped, which means a trip to the nearest Mayo Clinic to have this done BUT the nerve could attach somewhere else. If you go to a neurosurgeon he would be able to tell you more and I believe there would be a doctor that can start you on the right track. If you have insurance the doctor will need permission from them to start the shots or they won't pay and MAKE SURE YOU CHECK IF THE DOCTOR IS IN YOUR INSURANCE NETWORK. If not they may only 60% of the cost. If you want to talk more about this you can reach me by e-mail at homeln54@gmail.com and I will give you my number to call if need be. CD is very painful in it self but believe me you will find comfort soon after the procedures. Keep in mine I had this at least 7 years before diagnosed you may be luckier if haven't had it very long. I will help as much as I can through my experience.

what is DTR? Do you believe TMJ problems are the root cause of cervical dystonia?
@DrBenSutterEugene
@DrBenSutterEugene 7 жыл бұрын
DTR stands for Disclusion Time Reduction. In the cervical dystonia cases I have treated (two) there has been an underlying dental component that when corrected the symptoms improved. That is not to say these people are cured. Gary Demerjian in CA has seen similar things but he uses splints...DTR is different in the sense it requires objective measurement of several aspects of treatment and it is a splintless therapy. TMJ issues are a contributing factor for sure, IMHO.

@@lindajarvis6120 that is great for you, I have numerous patients that would disagree with you, so would Jeff Brown and Gary Demerjian. PDL neural pathways go right through the reticular formation which governs posture. The teeth are not the sole responsible party no, but they are a player in the game. There are several contributing factors and a search of the literature reveals no single etiology. Thanks for your comment
