In this video I talk about the different ways of installing a window in a Cessna and show how I installed a front window in my 182Q.

IN the video I mentioned the maintenance manual does not call for felt, but it does; Paragraph 3-6

What brand of windshield did you go with? Also, that old windshield had that folded over edge… how did that unlock from the aircraft roof ? Great video. Thank you!!

I used LP Aero. Solar gray with the UV filter. I am very pleased with the windshield! Both the old and new windshield have a retainer on the top (inside surface). Using the method described in the manual (push with your feet) may be enough to snap the windshield out of the lock. I used a very wide screwdriver and gently pushed the metal retainer down while pushing the window out.

Did that roof get buckled a little when you did the windshield or was it already there?

It was already there. I suspect someone was a little careless when the wings were removed many years ago. You hardly notice it from 5,000 ft :)

It's a full floating windshield that's why they use felt. So it doesn't crack when the airframe flexes. You can see a Cessna 182 windshield actually floating at a low idle which I avoid when possible cause it breaks the sealer. Also that buckle on the roof looks awful. You could of avoided that by pushing in some flat .032 sheet metal shim strips with the edges rounded off inside under the top windshield locking strip which gives it a ramp to slide out easily out of the top channel that it locks into. Kicking it out is cave man style it damages the roof or locking channel. I am going make a video on doing this right, your mechanic should of know this if experienced with Cessna windshields. Also with the strip unriveted you can trim it to fit up near the wings better. The front lower windshield edge under the riveted strip is not trimmed enough, its pushing the top part back past the leading edge. Once these planes get butchered its almost impossible to fix. Hopefully you got that top locking strip in far enough to engage the channel so it doesn't blow out.

I’m ready to see your video. Didn’t his putty knife do the same as your sheetmetal trick?

It was already buckled fyi.

@@mopar92 There's a few ways of doing Cessna windshields. The windshield has to float in felt or it cracks. Removing the lower retainer gives you a better fit & seal but takes longer. I measure the deep it sits in the channel & trim 1/8 " clearance for the felt. I just haven't got around to making a in detail video.
