CEO of the Construction Education and Training Authority Malusi Shezi, has sparked controversy with his plans for an extended overseas trip for his board members. According to documents reviewed by City Press, the government agency has already spent R4 million on flights, car hire, accommodation, and facilitator fees. Aldrin Sampear speaks to CETA's Thabo Masombuka and Nehawu’s Tumisho Madihlaba.

Mr.Madihlaba's observation that benchmarking is an operational function is spot-on. In a nutshell, the board's function is to approve strategy, operational plans and policies to support its strategy presented to the board by management, and to then exercise oversight over the implementation thereof.

So what in that statement empowers boards of oversight to travel at company expense to scratch up knowledge of operations in other countries? Research in best practice and zoom meetings of the most successful training facilities and their processes will only cost air time and time with books. Overseas trips with spending money included plus breakfast lunch and dinners and drinks is a blatant waste of money which the training facility cannot justify in real terms.

Boards should not take advantage of a free trip and hide behind benchmarking. This is an operational matter. Benchmarking can be done by 2 persons. They want to go on a glorified holiday.

Can’t see how this trip is going to help train and equip jobless people??? If they need such training then research will be able to fulfil these needs, further if the experience from overseas is necessary then zoom can be used for training days. Travel is irresponsible and expensive and drains funds. The accountability for the money is to the board. The board does NOT have hands on training. Trainers need qualifications - so what qualifications does the board have? What qualifications do the trainers have. This man is a chronic liar. Hands in the till. Cancelling the trip must be done today. Wonder how much that is going to cost? (Cancellation) worker rights do not mean board rights. How much salary do they get? Wait for outcomes - so sit on the chairs. Fast talker. False papers.
