The wonderful world of whales and dolphins. Below the waves lies a world of giants. Out in the open ocean, whales and dolphins are well-suited for to a life of wandering, traversing thousands of miles each year in search of krill blooms or breeding grounds. Together, these colossal mammals belong to the infraorder cetaceans. A name with roots in Greek, from ketos, meaning ‘a large sea creature’. But despite their size, cetaceans are elusive creatures, spending most of their lives underwater and in remote areas far out to sea. Let’s shine a light on the wonderful world of these marine mammals.

I had gone on a whale watching trip years ago, we saw a pod of 12 blue whales including babies. It was astonishing and everyone including the crew were amazed since they never seen more than 1 or 2 at a time. They had been in business for more than 30 years and it became a record. I will never forget how beautifully large they were, blowing water so high and gliding by our boat.

Just so you know those aren’t pods! That would only be orca which stay as a family in a pod their lifetime! Only time you see big whales together it’s because a lot of food in that area! We get humpbacks here in Alaska, leave each other when they head back to winter grounds in Maui and Baja, then somehow find each other in the same parts of Alaska to feed! Get it?😳😉

Cetaceans are such a diverse and interesting group of mammals. Not only do they reside in the sea, seemingly everywhere life is found, but they’ve specialized into niche roles like deep sea divers, massive filter feeders, or even intelligent hunters. Another thing astonishing about this group is their intelligence, they can learn, adapt, remember, teach, and plan. They’re not just robotic machines, but dynamic and cognitively active creatures that makes me respect the ocean even more than I already do.

I had one semester of ethology in University, and we were told that it happened over the span of 20th century. Scientists found one unique whale, who did the thing. In a year almost all whales in that aquatory did it. Fascinating.

I wonder the same thing about so many animals and insects, there is a spider for example that swings its webbing like a lasso to catch its prey, like how did it know to do that? Was it engineered into the spider through evolution?

@@deusexaethera Nah it's not like that. Yea it's scary for anyone in reality, but having anxiety spikes at home from the sight of open ocean is an irrational fear. Like, they cannot see the open space without imagining something irrational happening. Irrational fear is usually meant as unreasonably fearful, instead of meaning a thing that is unreasonable to be fearful of

I don't know what it is about whales, orcas and dolphins that I adore so much but just watching footage of them makes me feel like crying. They're such amazing creatures and I can hardly wrap my head around the fact that we exist in the same world as them. They're so fascinating and intelligent they almost don't seem real. It's a dream of mine to one day be able to swim or sail alongside some.

I needed this. There’s only a few channels that are perfect for that hour or two before bed that helps me drift away. I’ve burned up hours of content so I’m always trying to find that next awesome channel with replay ability. As amazing as the visuals are I can easily close my eyes and just listen and still be entertained and soothed. This channel is about to explode I think and I’ll do my part to help.

As a Shark lover i can tell you to just be scare of one or two, like the Tiger Shark or maybe a really starved Great White most are completely harmless if you do not bother them, some like the Lemon Shark even are known to like being scratched by some divers

@@NaturalWorldFacts It's a whale that started out singing at 52 hertz when it was first discovered, but it has deepened since then. The migration pattern it supposedly takes is similar to a fin whale's pattern, but it's far louder than the blue whale

These are some of the absolute best nature vids I've ever seen(including TV). Generally, I have a tough time sitting still through a whole video and bore extremely easily thanks to ADHD, but I've been watching these so completely enraptured that I lost track of the time. The narrative is almost poetic and the accent and tone of the reader's voice take the beauty of the imagery to the next level. I have not one doubt this channel is going to boom. It's about quality not quantity. Not that he doesn't deserve millions of subscribers. I hate that those big huge KZfaqrs who are bad people, get so many subscribers and make money off of drama and controversy. They don't deserve that money and subs. This type of channel is what is true quality. I hope he grows and gets the positive attention he deserves. I wish we could sub more than once. XOXOXO

Whales are SO COOL I'm so glad you've made a video about them with your usual incredible quality! Sperm whales are my favorite animal ever, because I mean, a giant predator that dives into the dark to hunt the mysterious giant squid? Cool as hell! Some more facts because I love them. Their clicks are supposedly loud enough they could literally kill a human swimming nearby from the vibration alone! Sperm whales were the most sought after during whaling times, but they dive so deep and so long their population was less impacted than most other whale species. One of their ancestors was the Levyatan Melvillei, a similarly sized but more terrifying creature, with giant teeth on the upper and lower jaws, that competed with the equally sized megalodon for prey

These videos are always so great and engaging. I sometimes find myself clicking off of videos if they go on too long or if I lose interest, but I don’t do that when I watch these. I absolutely love your voice. It’s a perfect blend of enchanting, intelligent, and, if I’m being honest, very attractive. It just feels like I’m listening to a person who really cares about the topic, which I don’t doubt you do. Thank you for these absolutely wonderful videos.

after watching this for the 4th time this week (yes _in a row_ ) I think I've gotta admit that this video has become comfort content I seek out to sleep to. I couldn't tell you what exactly it is, especially as I was never into whale sounds as other people seem to be, but it makes me feel very safe which is quite rare considering my anxiety disorder.. also the part where he says "the misticetti and the odontocetti" makes me very happy, it's my favorite for some reason. Idk but this video is just calling to me so thank you, Leo, for uploading it because even though sleeping isn't too much of a struggle for me I appreciate it immensely nonetheless

This is one of the most well-made documentaries I’ve seen, it could be considered as short but every single word is substantial, also the voice is perfect and keeps the viewer hooked from beginning to end, plus the edition and visuals used are extremely compelling too, loved it!
