In a pivotal moment amidst Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, the U.S. Senate passed a $60 billion aid package for Kyiv in a 79-to-18 vote Tuesday night. Despite the win, the measure faced dogged opposition in the House, where a majority of GOP members-112-voted against it. What explains the growing indifference, if not outright hostility, to Ukraine aid in the Republican Party? In this episode, Jacob Heilbrunn speaks with Curt Mills, executive director of The American Conservative. Mills previously worked at The National Interest, U.S. News & World Report, Washington Examiner, and the Spectator. He was a 2018-2019 Robert Novak Journalism fellow.

I think a lot of the unhappiness over Ukraine is really due to skepticism and distrust of NGOs and other nonprofit organizations creating a business out of conflict and instability. We're wise to question the motives of for-profit corporations but we keep ignoring the fact that nonprofits can be just as greedy and dangerous if not more so.

Good on the host for pushing back on Mills's claims about Zelensky, negotiations, and the general delusion - whether born of ignorance or bad faith - that Putin's olive branches are sui generis. If someone premises their discussion of this conflict by essentializing it to Zelensky, you can be reasonably certain that they haven't done the reading.
