In this video I show how you can wrap a coil around simple objects in Blender. I personally use this to make form fitting pipes for liquid cooling systems and wire windings for inductors or motors, but it can also be applied much more generally.

awesome tutorial :) Used it to wrap barbed wire around a bat, this made the whole process very simple and elegant :D Thanks

Awesome tutorial. Helped me to create the wire around the sword hilt very easily. Combined with random selection and random proporitonal edition helpe to make more organic effect

Im trying to apply a Guitar wire around an odd (hourglass type) tuning peg and i am just using a helix bezier and manualy shaping it around the peg. Then i thought this is so time consuming, there has to be an easyer way about it. So after a few initial words in google i found your tutorial. So im hoping that the shrinkwrap will contour the curve to this hour glass shape.

Once again, it's excellent. Fast, easy, complete. On question, we can see strange "S" shapes in the inner part of the coil.. how can we get rid of them ?
@CGFigures
@CGFigures 3 жыл бұрын
This one is interesting. I get the feeling that the strange S shape might be overlapping or intersecting geometry. To test that just try to shrink the coil diameter and see if it goes away.

It took me so long to try and find the end of that curve. I couldn't see a gap. It'd be nice if there was a button or something in the creation panel to mark the end of the curve or something.
@CGFigures
@CGFigures 3 жыл бұрын
I've had this problem myself. Sometimes I will just "snip" the curve if it's faster. You can also change how many coils you generate to stop it from completing a full wrap around, but I haven't found a good way to get smoother transitions yet. Something to revisit in the future perhaps

This is great however is there a way to wrap it around a bending pipe without getting all messy?

These days I would wholeheartedly recommend using Johnny Matthew's approach for achieving this effect. It's more up to date and offers a lot more flexibility for cleaning things up. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l5tppZia09TIiGg.html

I see that you can change wire diameter at any point, but can you change the number of turns once the coil is created and the new object dialog box is gone?
@CGFigures
@CGFigures 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately curves don't tend to easily update that way. You could use array modifiers to try to add more turns but that is likely more trouble than it's worth.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Great video, very professionally presented. I design inductors so this will be a great asset for my presentations.

Awesome! Could you make neurons with an action potential animation?
@CGFigures
@CGFigures 3 жыл бұрын
Neurons are definitely on the list, I just have to find an approach that I'm happy with for teaching them. They tend to be very stylized so I'm trying to come up with something that gives a lot of flexibility. Animation is also a tricky question. I would personally animate an action potential using materials (change colour and glow likely), but others may want something with movement so it really depends. I'm planning to do longer features this year so I'll try to put some versions of this in the schedule.

@@CGFigures Thanks! Just to give me two cents, the 'material' action potential would be very useful to me.

I came across this tutorial when I was researching this request. I think it covers it pretty well. John has made an interesting suggestion below as well, but this approach should work for your purpose. I may still do this myself but with a different spin. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hb-AZ7ljqMDSgJ8.html

Hi! Do you also know how to animate a current moving through a wire?
@CGFigures
@CGFigures 2 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of options so it depends a bit. You could setup a particle/geometry nodes system to move small charges along the curve or inside the mesh. You could also setup a gradient material that moves along the mesh and makes a certain part of it glow. Plenty of possibilities.

@@communist754 I don't know that I would make a tutorial on this just because animation is so particular but it could work its way into a Blender and Science episode as a demo, so potentially.
