He shook his head, waved his arms, beat time, and acted generally in a manner that any conductor less accustomed to the ways of genius might have found trying in the extreme. Released in 1957 on Columbia Masterworks (ML 5211), this monaural LP was played on a #Garrard401 turntable using a #GrayResearch108B tonearm, a #ShureS35C cartridge, a Music Reference RM5 mk3 valve phonostage output through a simple stereo-to-mono resistor circuit, and a Tascam DR07 mk2 recorder for A/D conversion.

Gould is still my all time favorite musician! Bernstein was the best music teacher I ever had! I never missed his, 'Young People's Concerts'. The kids on the block didn't get it, but I sure did! When Leonard started breaking down Beatles songs, I was amazed. He liked the Beatles! These two great men gave me something priceless!

Gould and Bernstein gave their first performance together with the NY Philharmonic at the beginning of 1957, playing this concerto. In the summer of 1957, they made this recording of Bach and Beethoven, with an elite not too large group of free-lance players over two days of recording. There is an amusing article written at the time, describing how the conductor and recording staff patiently put up with the star's antics. They knew it was worth it!

10:25 Cadenza of 1st movement, Allegro Con Brio. Bernstein was ecstatic over Gould's interpretation of this.

completely agree! thank goodness Bernstein had an open mind, was willing to compromise, and gave full trust to Gould...otherwise, we wouldn't have these amazing recordings.
