Chôro da Saudade by Agustín Barrios, performed by Karmen Stendler

"Chôro" (cry or lament) is a Portuguese word depicting an instrumental Brazilian popular music genre which originated in 19th century Rio de Janeiro. Chôros are mostly characterized by virtuosity, improvisation and subtle modulations, and are full of syncopation and counterpoint.
“Saudade” is a hard word to translate into English. It refers to nostalgia, profound sadness or feelings of yearning, such as in homesickness or remembering people you will never again meet.
This beautiful piece was written in 1929 by the Paraguayan composer and guitar virtuoso, Agustin Barrios Mangoré (1885-1944), who dedicated it to Americo Camargo, the son of a good friend who had died tragically young.

Julián: existe una leyenda según la cual tu genial bisabuelo Agustín dejó cientos de partituras inéditas, guardadas en baúles en una vieja casa en el interior del Paraguay, y que ha sido inaccesible por voluntad de sus hijos por muchos años. ¿Qué hay de cierto? Have to agree Julian, iv'e heard many versions of this piece but this is by far the best for me.silky smoth and beautifully played, just as i imagine your great grandfather would like it to be. Just seems to capture the essence of it completely.

Cuando él optó por quedarse acá y hacer de nuestra tierra su última parada por este precioso mundo, no sólo dejó escuela, sino que fue todo un apóstol de la guitarra al grado de que a sus primeros alumnos se les conocía y aún se les conoce como los" discípulos" de Mangoré. Tuve la suerte de recibir clases con dos de ellos, y nunca podría olvidar las anécdotas de viva voz que contaban del gran Maestro. Un caluroso saludo desde nuestra tierra

Lovely choice of tempo, giving the song a serenity that many players rush past. The delicacy and precision of the way the counterpoint is balanced welcomes us into the 'inside' of the song, so to speak. Sweet, sweet tone, too. Thank you!

Incredible interpretation, for my agustin barrios is of my favorite composers and guitarists, his way of making music is fascinating, and I think you made a beautiful interpretation, I really like your sound, it is quite clean and an amazing legatto. 1:54. You playing b-g-c# (what IS that chord?!) someplace between frets 1 and 6 still looks and sounds way more relaxed than when most regular folks (certainly me) play the em cowboy chord. And that is just one instance out of 6 flawless minutes of enchantment. Sublime technique! 👀

Nice. I see I am not the only one having difficulty when playing the bar at 1:54. It's a very long stretch. Only a view can play that complete chord I suppose.

Your playing is beautiful obviously, but I'm commenting specifically for the "Cat Power" poster. I've never seen it before, and I wonder if it has anything to do with Cat Power as in Chan Marshall, or if it's something completely different. Please, don't take my random question as dismissing your incredible performance!
