Satei Hatou is a long-established coffee shop that has existed for 30 years. Even James Freeman, founder of Blue Bottle Coffee, wrote that it was one of his favorite cafes in Japan. Here, you can experience coffee culture that inspired many other third wave coffee establishments in Japan. Take a break from the bustle of Shibuya and spend a quiet moment in this old-school kissaten to enjoy some of Tokyo’s finest java.

I love this coffee house. I visit every time I'm in Tokyo and am happy to wait 10 minutes and pay almost a tenner for a small cup 😅. I always get a kick out of seeing which cup they choose for me depending on how present visually that day. Should I be offended by an obnoxious, vermillion-hued wraparound dragon when my husband gets an understated, symmetrical pattern of cobalt blue columns? 😂 Aesthetically there's a coffee/tea house for all sensibilities and tastes when it comes to Tokyo: elegant high-end discretion, wild Showa-era kitsch, Seoul-style slick contemporary, cartoon and colour, full-on themes...half the fun is doing the research and finding the real hidden gems, knowing the perfect one for your mood and style is out there.

Oh wow!!! Now THIS is a Coffee Shop. I want to support someone who cares about every detail and aspires to make beautiful coffee & give a great experience too. The next time I visit Tokyo, I will make a point to visit Satei Hatou in Shibuya.

Hi Bill! Next time you go (now that international travel restrictions have finally been lifted) find me online and I'll give you a list of the hidden gems which never get written about or shared via KZfaq. It makes me wince to see these juvenile, unimaginative folks who go all the way to Japan only to hashtag a visit to a chain coffeehouse like Starbucks. The wince'n'cringe is almost painful. My mission is to help strangers find The Cool Stuff instead of lazily giving money to these awful soulless chains. I'm thrilled to recall Starbucks terrible flop when trying to extend its corporate tentacles around Australia and squeeze the independents out of business. I'm so happy they failed so spectacularly. Hope you'll get to return to Japan soon. 😊🤞

@@ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293 Thank you, that's very kind of you. After such a long time of inability to travel to Japan, I'm actually looking at a likely event being organised right now, for 2023. I'm uncertain of precise dates or even location. But a friend has been asked to travel to Japan to assist with organising it, and that should help make it a success. Regardless of all that, I'm now just starting to pull out interesting things to see and do. I actually prefer to avoid cities in Japan and opt for the rural regions, especially Kyushu & Niigata. However I am wanting to see this gentleman's Shibuya coffee shop, and will certainly make the effort to get there.

@@BelloBudo007 I recommend Kanazawa and Takayama-- with a day trip to Shirakawago. Good luck in squirrelling away as much spending money as you can and flying with an airline that has a two-suitcase check-in allowance at no extra cost. 😃👍

I luv the way you handle that kettle. There is something attractive about a nice man working that kettle. That is a gorgoues looking necktie. I will go to Shibuya so that I can see you performing this in person.

Place is quite, and a wonderful place to relax and experience your coffee. Best coffee I have ever, and will ever enjoy. If you love or even like coffee, it is well worth the few steps from shibuya central. Can't say enough about this place!!!

Coffee is meant to be sipped instead of gulped at this cafe. I would still have to order two cups of coffee since the size is so small. That could get expensive with their prices.
