Such steamed rice cooking method is also very popular among the Tai Lai Sengmai communities in Manipur and also traditional style in other Tai Peoples in Tai Khamti (Arunachal & Myanmar ), Tai Laing, Tai Yai, Tai Lue, Tai Nue, Tai Daeng, Tai Dams in Vietnam, Laos, Yunnan, North Thailand, Myanmar. It's also very popular for cooking sticky rice.

This indigenous method of cooking rice (steaming) has been used and followed by Monsang community since long time back, so does Moyon community too in Chandel dist. Steaming rice is very popular in Chandel now specially during functions because huge amount of rice can be cooked in short duration.I grew up cooking this way till today. At first we used ngankok made from bamboo, then mud ngankok made by our meitei neighbors from Waikhong or Thongjao. But now all these traditional ngankok is replaced by aluminium ones made from Nepali sanapun imported mostly from Dimapur Recently, this ready made ngankok is available but little heavier than the one made from Nepali sanapun. The steamed rice taste better when we toss thoroughly after cooked,in a large platter which look like a basin but made of bamboo. We called that platter as Aelang in Monsang but don't know in Manipuri.This way it enhances the texture of the rice. Not only rice, but veggies, mushrooms and any other items can be steam if we don't want to boil.
