Svetoslav Costoff is born in a family of musicians in Sofia. His grandmother, Lilia Costoff, is the first bulgarian violinist, which has performed in one evening „the three B” (concerts for solo violin by Bach, Beethoven and Brahms) with the Sofia philharmonic orchestra. His father has played the cello in several famous orchestras in Europe and has performed also as a soloist. Growing and thriving in the embrace of music, Svetoslav Costoff goes already four years old in his father’s footsteps and begins to play the cello. Later he chooses his instrument to be the guitar. His first teacher Emil Petrov inspires his musical development until starting his bachelor studies. After an outstanding graduation of the Academy of Music in Sofia under the leadership of his main teacher - Rossen Balkanski- he expanded his education at the Academy of Music in Berlin with the famous pupil of Karl Scheidt - Prof. Eugenia Kanthou. Master classes with Gerhard Reichenbach, Alvaro Pierri, Zoran Dukic, József Eötvös and others strongly influenced his musical development as a guitarist and interpreter. But Svetoslav Costoff points as a crown of his musical education the regular visiting of rehearsals of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, at the time he was still a student in Berlin, with the scores of the current played works.
During and after his studies he became laureate of several international competitions for guitar in Europe. After that starts his active concert career. At first he performs mainly for the Live Music Now-Foundation von Yehudi Menuhin in Berlin, where he is the first accepted solo-guitarist. He gives active concerts for five years for the foundation in Berlin and Brandenburg. Since 2011 works Svetoslav Costoff as a freelance artist in Berlin- there he resides with his wife and his son until today.

An amazing and unique performance, aided by a magnificent recording of a distinctly powerful guitar. A pleasure to hear in all respects. Bravo! ... (and your right hand is the most like Segovia's that I've ever seen!) . Thank you for your musicianship.

Another magnificent rendering of this timeless masterpiece, the performance is clear, powerful and soulful. To me continue to be one of my favorites pieces, and although I also enjoy the original for solo violin, somehow the most beautiful instrument -the guitar- brings the mystery to our own enjoyment.

Bravo! I loved this performance. Some musicians try and prove their technical ability but don't play this so softly, clearly and with great feeling. It takes more than technique to make a great performance!

The Ciaccona (Chaconne) is a unique work in the history of music: it is the first slow movement that closes a cyclic work and has a greater number of bars than the other movements of the cycle together (without the repetitions). Perhaps it is also the longest movement (play duration) for a solo instrument ever. It contains the structure and features of several musical forms: theme with variations (eight-bars-theme, thirty variations and again the theme - like in the Goldberg Variations), Tombeau, Chaconne, a mass-opening Kyrie eleison without words (d-minor part - Kyrie eleison, D-major part - Christe eleison, and again Kyrie eleison) - and unites them all into a new organic whole. The probable reason for the origin of this unique composition is one that is even more interesting and touching. Bach writes exclusively impersonal music, music dedicated to God, and not simply an expression of personal joy or suffering, the way the composers in the romantic period did. Probably there is only one exception - the Ciaccona - written due to the death of his first wife Maria Barbara, which connects those two worlds: the human world with the divine world. Svetoslav Costoff refers to the rhythmic and melodic similarity between the opening tones from Kyrie eleison of the Mass in B minor (BWV 232) and those of the Ciaccona theme. He interprets this monumental movement as Bach‘s intimate prayer due to the death of the composer‘s first wife - “Lord, have mercy” (Kyrie eleison). From this point of view, the three big parts of the Ciaccona receive a new meaning, different than being just a Tombeau (musical tombstone, burial ceremony). Through this point of view we find again the whole spiritual circle of life, relived from the human soul: Kyrie eleison - the soul is above with God; Christe eleison - it is down on earth, experiencing joy and suffering; Kyrie eleison - it returns back home. Through the Ciaccona, Bach lets go of his wife in a spiritual way, because he could not do this physically (after three months of traveling, he returns home in July 1720 and learns about her death, despite that he left her in wonderful health). It is quite marvelous in that occasion to observe the connection between the so-called Christe eleison (D-major part) and the Kyrie after it (d-minor part): the last four bars of the major part and the first four bars of the following minor part build one variation! Somehow through this major-minor connection (life on earth and the life above), Bach opens the door for his wife for the return of her soul back to heaven.

This rendition of the now gold standard for guitarist transcribed and played by Andres Segovia shows how technically facile Svestolav is on the the guitar . His scale runs and arpeggios were effortlessly performed . His guitar was remarkable in its clarity and projection . My only complaint is his dynamics in playing this piece when it transitions in 4:20 and 14:30 I feel it should have been played much more softly as contrast and that’s what I felt lacking . Also , I do not recall any trills in this piece . I felt that if there was more coloring and dynamics it would have been perfect . I listened to the piece again and I feel the same.

Flawless. As an autist I don't understand much about neurotypical emotions, but when I attempt to play it (badly) I can't help embracing the fact, Bach wrote this as a widower in memory of his late wife and as an obedient follower of Christ. Now my point is, experienced performers of the piece don't have facial expressions in line with what the different themes in the piece probably intend to express. The piece has a very diverse spectrum of emotions, from anger to depression and back to rejoicing. Of course it would be bad to fake these emotions for the thousandth time performing the piece, but I feel some parts should be played more piano, slower, some more aggressive. It tends to sound quite leveled, when played by these experts, I'm missing the mourning of a dead loved one in a cruel world, but the realization of a loving creator awaiting. I always end up thinking about how humans brought sin and death into this world and the bible tells us to hate this world and wordly things and be dead for the sin, as God is life and holiness... Well, that's just my bloomy two cents. Nevertheless, as I stated: flawless!!! I'm miles away and that's most certainly not a big enough measurement unit.
